Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Umpires do have a significant influence. Created more crowd fights than I have seen for many years, final booing proves respect is earned not forced, impact on scoreboard profound. Must be overhauled and a professional body established.

A professional body at arms length from the AFL too. Should cover umpires at all levels and be run separately. The AFL make the rules, but the adjudication should be run by an organisation that can train the umpires without undue interference from head office. Bit like the ways courts are separate from legislators.

Just noticed this 2 days ago from David King. "Get a thicker skin....or a new job" :mhihi

You just know that Brad Scott and will claim the rule is working the way as expected. If that were true, then he should be fired and never heard from again. Horrible, horrible rule.

How many more fake handballs do we need to see for the stand rule to be banished? At least remove this part from the game so that if the handball is given and the player has moved then its a 50, but if the handball is not given then its play on. The one we gave away yesterday, the Bombers player (can't remember who it was but was in our F50) was never planning on making the handball but was trying to win a 50m penalty. Hardly the best optics, where the player actually trying to cheat the rule is the one rewarded for it.

Absolutely nailed it gehring.

Players are clearly frustrated.
Fans are clearly frustrated.
Umpiring is affecting games.

It needs to be addressed, because footy is in trouble

The umpires don’t make it up as they go.
They’ve been told to crack down on tackles. Hands outs, talking back, the standing rule...
Question is why?
Who’s dumbass ideas are these?
Ruining the *smile* game

So on the sunday footy show they said the arc wasn't used on the dusty goal/behind because the crowd noise was too loud and they couldn't discern it from that.

The technology the AFL uses is crap - how would this work in a grand final?
You couldn't make that *smile* up.

we are trail blazers.

first ever player penalised for a rushed behind: Luke McGuane
first player ever penalised for marking a ball in a game with a huge crowd when the touched off the boot call couldn;t be heard: Bachar Houli (and hasn't happened since)
first ever player penalised for appealing for a free kick that wasn't paid: Tom Lynch
Another first: The 50 against Dusty at fullback, our FF. Happens a few times a game, every game, free or a mark at fullback, player on the mark forgets or pretends to forget to get back 9 metres, ump reminds him, he dawdles back 9 metres. Thats the way its always gone, until last night. Dusty actually moved quicker than most.

The umpiring is abysmal across the board. something has to give.

The Nankervis free against in the last qtr has probably been mentioned earlier but it shows how looking for one infringement (jumper holding) means the umpire missus all the arm holding infringeing against Nank that preceeded it. Poor training of umpires and the talent pool must be very small.
Let's face it, who'd want to be an AFL umpire with the pace of the game, the complexity of individual contests and the relatively low pay for what you have to cop from the crowd?
How on earth did Peter Sheales umpire our games in the 60's, on his own and do a good job as well?
The speed of the game is higher now but the marking contests and ruck contests are much the same aren't they?
We've got more umpires to help them cope with the speed so what's the main problem?

If you watched the Hawthorn V Brisbane game today you would be even more rejected by the way the game has gone.

Woeful. Absolutely woeful our great game has come to this.

Watching replay of hawks v bris. Zorko gets tackled by CJ. Zorko tries to orchestrate an in the back. No doing. As he gives the ball to the ump he asks why he didn’t get the free. Same as Lynch did to Razor a couple of weeks ago. No dissent free. Why? Because it’s a *smile* up subjective rule that is ruining the spectacle.

I don’t understand why our umpires escape criticism like protected species. Any other sport in the world they are held to account. We are precious.
That's the biggest issue.
Not highlighting there mistakes will always have them making the same mistakes.
We shouldn't turn up next week.
We wil get reamed

He wasn't the only one that long haired dud Bailey did the same but no 50.

That free kick against Grimes may be one of the worst decisions of the season and that's saying something.
we've had three absolute clangers where it's been called dangerous tackle and zero head contact to the ground in two weeks i think, two in this game. i don't watch other games much, has any other teams had three or more of these incorrectly called against them?

I heard bits and pieces of the Hawthorn game on the radio and Richo - who’s normally very neutral/boring - was absolutely going off at the standard of umpiring.

Him, Leonard, Shaw and Granland all making comment a number of times throughout the day how the umpiring had made the game very frustrating and detracted from the enjoyment and how the game had real and serious problems in respect of the stand rule, dissent and abject over-officiating. Richo called the game embarrassing at the moment.

I think there were something like 63 free kicks in the Hawthorn game.

And channel 7 just exacerbate the frustration for those at home by not showing replays.
Yes that's obvious now, do not show replays of Tigers free kick against!
Years ago free kicks were scrutinized on tv to an inch of their lives!
