C'mon Bubbles tell us the REAL story..........you know behind the scenes stuff........

What really happened at Harlem, in LA and on the Greek Islands.

We want to read "STRUGGLETOWN OVERSEAS - UNPLUGGED"  :hihi

Funny you actually say that Forceskin.
For a while during Greece and Turkey we travelled with a guy from Chicago called Eric.
He was a non drinking Jewish boy from the suburbs of Chicago.
His head spun at Shaun and my antics whilst on tour. Anyway Eric came up with this hairbrained idea,he would film us everyday and night when we did anything remotely interesting and write a daily diary on all the mental things young Aussie boys do when given the freedom of the world at their feet.
This lasted a few weeks until he gave up.I still keep contact with him,and he still plans to write a book on our adventures.
He must get credit,as he lasted nearly 6 years on his worldwide journeys and when we met him I wouldn't have backed him to last a month.
Ahhh........so that's where 'reality' television started.....  :hihi

Careful Bubbles........he could've been a terrorist :nailbiting :nailbiting

Very late night and low brow reality TV Farrah Force-itt

I haven't watched any of the footage for a few years now,but its extremely funny stuff.
My kingdom for my youth and freedom again :'( :'(

yeah our whole trip is arranged!

initially i was gonna go there with my boxing/kickboxing gym but now i'm going for leisure instead. No way i would wanna go overseas for more training! Esp in the humidity!

i'll be going with 4 other friends and staying at Phuket for 4 nights, then Koh Samui for 4-5 nights then Bangkok for 3 nights. I wanted to come back an extra day early for work, but screw work  8)

You'll have a cracking time Otis Redding.

I've been to all those places and all are great (or at least were 5 years ago proir to Tsunami)

ToOtsy can fill you in on Bangkok.
I liked Phuket, nice beach (loads of Europeans) and millions of tiny little bars at one end of town.
The mountains behind the township are worth exploring by renting a motorbike and blasting along non busy roads.
Take yourself over to Kata beach just a few Kms away if you want a cleaner quieter beach.
Samui was brilliant the first time I went, but is (like PHI PHI) falling to Western excesses, but still a terrific little island to visit.

Re: Bangkok

On a side note I'm heading up to Chiang Mai (the other main town in Thailand) for the first time since I've been here for a few days. I'm gonna have a BBQ & beers with Gus & CMT for the Rd1 game against the Bullies.

Looking forward to it. 8) :beer :emblem >:D

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

my god, 'a few weeks'?.  scary.

this non-drinking member of a bucks night I was on in Byron Bay a couple of years ago filmed the whole night, from the first to arrive to the final final bumbling ambarrasing moments.  Painful

If you remember a lot of your past years overseas, then start a diary thread on it Bubbles.

Before you're hibernation from PRE, I've been meaning to ask you more about your time in Florida.

I've always wanted to work and live in the US but can't afford it. :-[

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

Part 2:

Anyway for those who didn't sleep through my entire last entry (ex girlfriends excepted) heres the 2nd leg of the tour.

Afetr travelling from LA down to Tijuana and Baja,I then worked my way up from San Diego, back to LA where I stayed with poor little rich girl (whom I met in London)in the hills.
Daddy was USA corporate speaker of the year one year in the 90's.Married 6 times.
Mommy was an ex playmate and married 5 times including one that lasted 2 weeks before he came out and admitted he was gay.
Anyhow there house was a filthy display of wealth,so I guess I got lucky as I was taken care of and went to many LA attractions but just hated the "Im an Actor" mentality of everyone....I enjoyed telling them that I was basically an unemployed scumbag illegal immigrant just for the reaction!
I enjoyed San Francisco heaps more, had a blast at Fishermans Wharf on St Patricks day,and again stayed with a nice lass who I worked with in London as well, and luckily worked for The Marriot and had a bed to sleep in again.Great diverse town, not excessively large and plenty to see and do_Oakland was *smile* though, earthquakes merely improve that hovel.
Promised an old friend I worked with in London I'd visit her in hicksville.
Klamath Falls Oregon, only 10 miles from Crater Lake, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.Wow,it was freakish.
Small town people in the USA simply try to kill you with kindness......its incredible how hospitible they are,as most wouldn't know where Australia is,let alone met anyone from there.
From there I went via the Golden Route up through Portland into Seattle.
If your doing the West Coast going South-North,and have the time its a must drive.
Breathtaking.
Seattle had the best nightlife of any city I went to in the US.Fantastic bands and venues, esp at Pioneer Square where you got a stamp for about 10 bucks that got you entry into every club in the district, which was 20 odd.The grunge scene was truly alive back in the mid nineties, and Seattle was where it all began.
The next 12 months was spent in Vancouver BC Canada.
Its the city that most reminded me of Melbourne, rainy but green and lush.
Sports crazy too, they love Ice hockey do the canucks.
Went to heaps of games, loved it.....Go Blackhawks!!
Had a cushy job as a result of being poached to play cricket for Vancouver CC.
Shaun had been in Van for 3 months before I got there and had me teed up for a job through them if I played.....win win for me!!
Had great fun and they got me a cash paying job for being a storeman who did nothing at a Dept Store.Magic.....got payed a fortune in cash for just making friends with the staff. It meant we could live by the beach and bought a 8 seat 1979 Ford Clubwagon affectionately known as 'the Humungus' after the Mad Max gang who had the same Van.
Made some lifetime friends and almost stayed for good (for a chick no less!)
but left for more adventure and the Olympics in Atlanta, after we played in a winning premiership for Vancouver :clap
The road trip was such a great memory.
We saw The Calgary Stampede,a cowboy style week long party which I didn't quite enjoy(the musics shithouse)
The Canadian rockies, which are fabulous,as was Lake Louise,Banff and Jasper national park.
We left Canada after seeing Niagra Falls aboard the 'maid of the mist'and drove the humongus into the US of A.
We drove across prairies and amish lands into Milwaukee where beers were 35 cents....or free if you did the tours through the brewerys (like we did 4 times) before staggering through the Harley Davidson Museum.
Then hit Chicago which is my favorite US city of them all.
I loved everything about the place from the architecture, people and their sporting teams.
I love the Cubs and the Blackhawks, and like the Bears.
If you get a chance,go to Wrigley Field and watch the Cubbies play and hit the Wrigleyville bars afterwards,I'll guarantee an awesome day.I'd spend an entire summer there just for that if I possibly could.
Once we cut ourselves away from Chicago(heavyheartedly) we went as far East as Boston then drifted South along the coast until we hit Florida about a month later.
Highlights were NYC,Washinton Dc and the 3 lovelys that put us up there
and into Atlanta for the Olympics.
We arrived late as we partied hard in DC and misssed that bomb that went off by a day.Very sobering indeed.I was at the very site not 48 hours after it went off.
Met Dawn Fraser and found the pub the Aussie athletes went to celebrate in after they'd finished competing......we met dozens of them everyday.
Watched the Aussies down Croatia in Basketball, and saw the USA 'Dreamteam" after that.
We saw the Girls hockey Gold Medal win,the mens loss and subsequent playoff game for bronze and went wild at Buckhead the party district every night.
Met heaps of ex-pats and fellow backpackers as well.
Scored a major bonus when Shaun ran into Robbie Peden the boxer who he knew as a former pug himself. He snuck us both into Fox Studios which had been decked out for the Aussie athletes by Rupert Murdoch as a gift to the side on the last night after the final ceremony...HUGE!! Free Fosters and Prawns, and any other delicasy you can ever imagine.
We stuck out like sore thumbs with our tatty gear and Aussie flags wrapped around us,not to mention whaling into their food and booze like.....well.....FERALS!!
But no one cared and we got some beaut phoos with some medals on to boot.
We stayed with a couple who we met in Santorini years before and again......incredible hospitality to virtual strangers......they even set us up with single work colleuges....YAY!
We rumbled out of there until the car ran out of juice in a town called Daytona Florida..............but thats for part 3!!!

WAKE UP WAKE UP.........im going now ;)

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

Seattle had the best night life !!   Strange.

Was it easy to find work in each state ?

Four years ago, I met a group of people in New Jersey on a New York bound train and they tried to guess what country I came from.

1st person :  Are you Irish ?
2nd person : Are you English ?
3rd person : Nooooo, can't you all see his from New Zealand.
4th person : Oh I get it, you're from.....what's that place called.....um...yeah Australia.....isn't that close to Italy  ::)      (he thought of AUSTRIA)

The Yanks have got a lot to learn.

Re: Bangkok

thanks struggs 'n' ToO :afro

at this point in time i just need to get away and relax... look at me! surfing the web while i'm at work!

i'm just gonna relax on the beach and wait for all the lady-folk to come to Otis.

i'll need somebody to feed me grapes and to fan me down. 8)

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

Great report there ST3121..
I will hopefully be going over to the states in August-September though my trip will be only 3 or so weeks long so won't get to see much :(

Would love to go to Alaska but i don't think i will have the time to see it even half decently considering my travelling companion wants to spend time in places like LA and Las Vegas..:(
Though i am looking forward to Canyon/Desert areas of Arizona/Utah as well as the Colorado rockies...

Maybe next time!

For a nation with such fantastic education programs you'd think they'd teach geography wouldn't you?
I could fill 15 pages with some of the stupid comments but here's my top 3.

The Van had British Columbia rego plates on it.

"Did you guys drive over from Britain?"
ST "Yeah,on the London-New York Expressway, you been on it yet?"
"No,but I'm planning to next year!!"

"British Columbia.....where's that?"
ST "Canada"
"Oh yeah, thats in Connecticut isn't it?"

"Where's British Columbia?"
ST "Canada"
"Wow,I always thought Canada was in the Americas.....not in Australia??!!"

Forceskin,no it ain't easy to get work.
I didn't have a work visa for the USA,and worked dodgy for cash at backpackers hotels which is just enough to live on.I only worked in Vancouver (Can) and Florida and briefly in Hawaii.
If you are under 28 (used to be 26) you can apply for a Canadian 12 month working visa. Not easy to get work there either,I was very lucky both times.
Remeber we were living in a van that I converted into a mobile home, fuel and food in the US was cheap and Gyms all over the country got suckered into giving us a workout and shower for free thinking we'd just moved to the area!

Outcasting couch, one of my regrets of travel is that we didn't go to Alaska :bash
When we were up Northern canada we should have bitten the bullett and gone over there.
I haven't yet heard a bad thing about the place, its unique.
Trouble is and always will be,so many destinations,so little time and money.

With regards to Vegas, you can have some great day trips to Hoover Dam and charter flights over the Grand Canyon and Rockies which I recommend if can afford them.
You can also stand on the point of 4 states just outside the Hoover Dam area.
I hired a car and its good to get of Vegas during the day as you spend the whole time there drinking and punting otherwise (which I thought would be my idea of Nirvana until I started losing too much) and the transport is basically non-exsistent.

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

Great reports Struggles you have done very well.
Couple of the things (among many) you have done that I would like to is
- play cricket o/s prefer England but Canada be fine
- watch Olympics in enemy territory and to see Gold (would watch Aths, Cycling, Hockey, Tri and anything free) also would like to watch cricket o/s in WI, Eng and SAF.

Great reports look fwd to further travels.

I did play a few games in England as well, but got cut short when I decided to move to Belfast for a while.
The standard in Canada was weird.
The opening bowler for one side played test cricket for Pakistan, and usually each side had at least 4-5 good players who had played at a high level (English county cricket ect) but tapered off to Heidelberg District 3rd grade standard!!
At one end you could have a demon quick and the other end was a pie chucking battler.

I loved being in Atlanta when the Olympics were on,the athletes really apprieciated the support and would often run over to clap or thank you for being there :clap

I've been to the UK twice and USA once but only as a tourist. If I had the money, I'd go and live in NY with my cousin and travel around the country to get a better feel of it because one problem with touring is that you only get half a day to see each city you arrive into. Everytime I play Tatts (only when there's a jackpot), I know exactly what the first thought in my mind will be.

Looks like you had a great time in the US moving around your way, as I only toured through NY, Washington, Philadelphia, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Rapid City, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Carmel and LA and stayed in most cities (except NY) for 1 day at the most.

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

I'm going over to Paris in June to study at the Sorbonne for a bit. Should be good.

Re: Travel/Overseas thread

That was a fantastic read Struggs! Tell us more!! :clap :clap I agree that LA is full of wannabes. Its just horrible. Did you happen catch any bands in Oakland? I'd kill to see Tower of Power in their home town! ;D

I've just returned from a week's hiking in the Snowy Mountains. Highly recommend The Main Range walk from Thredbo to Charlotte Pass, stunning views and you get to see 3 of only 5 glacial lakes in Australia (above 2000mtrs). Incredible sunsets and a blanket of stars at night. Also saw a bit of the mountain bike trials for some big race - jeez those guys are insane!! I had no idea it was such an extreme sport!! They just tear down the mountain like maniacs.
