Training For Redemption in 2022

Love the support but a couple of points to call out.

Chimp is 3 years younger than Boyd was in 2016 (and he played another year). Waaayyyy younger.

And yet another post suggesting the great man retires this year. He is one day difference in age to Dangerfield yet bet no-one suggesting he is close to the end mon Geelong forums.

Seems a lot are fait accompli the great Chimpanzee is on his last legs.

Leysy for one doesn't see it like that.

plus Dangerfield has had a lot more wear and tear on his elbows

I don't think not winning clearances is the issue. It's letting the opposition win too many clean clearances. We've always set up to win games on turnover (as most sides do), but you can't turn the ball over if the oppo's forwards are getting perfect delivery all day long.

This is critical, winning clearances is important, but even more important is preventing clean clearances by the opposition, something we failed to do last year.

this isn't really the point though.

with nankervis and soldo in the side, we

1) degrade oppo clearances ALL quarter which gives us better turnover opportunities, particularly in red time

2) we get flexibility to push one of them down back to fill the hole, allowing vlastuin, grimes and balta to run off, enhancing rebound no end

3) one of them can play bail out on the wing if our wingers are pushed back too far into defence and we scramble it out. we missed this option last year. oppo got several repeat entries against us.

4) we win more clearances! soldo is becoming an excellent tap ruckman to the likes of Prestia and Edwards

I'd be very surprised if a fully fit Nank and Soldo combo isn't rolled out at every opportunity.

I raised this in a survey recently and got a call back to discuss it. Made it clear that I thought the website content (especially in the context of providing actual insight, rather than herald sun/afl site level generic stuff) had been on the slide for a number of years. Looks like it fell on deaf ears
Thought I should follow this up and give credit where it's due - the video, narrated by hardwick, covering the training camp was really good imo. Offered a perspective not able to be gotten elsewhere and was well put together. Good job RFC, here's to more of that type of website content!

I miss those weekly video's with dimma chatting about the previous game & showing certain plays to explain what he was talking about.

Well, that was an interesting experience, to say the least. Got into the ground to watch the majority of training before
I was kicked out by Tim Livingstone - I think taking notes probably attracted their attention eventually but I did so because my memory is not as good as Ceasar!

Anyway, I shall do my best and I do not think I am giving away any intellectual property since anyone can stand on the wing and see through the fence (though I did manage to get a seat well away from anyone till I was ejected). Also, a reminder that these comments are my opinions only (though I have watched footy for more than 50 years).

Watched the warm-ups and noticed the following in the rehab group Graham, Lambert, Ralphsmith and Judson Clarke. Lynch took no part at all and I did not see Banks or Riewoldt.

Have to say Lambert did his work with the rehab group and then kept doing laps when they finished - he will have miles in his legs.

There were warm-ups followed by sprints and then several games of handball through traffic to goals amongst other drills and then a game which I saw 30 minutes of before I was ejected.

Comments on players during drills:

Aarts was very competitive in all the sprints - did not want anyone to beat him;

Stack looked bulkier in the bum/thighs - was worried it was a fitness issue but he sprinted well and completed training easily;

Martyn is made to look slow in the sprints - can get the ball but I am not sure we can carry too many slow players;

Biggy is tall, well built and very athletic;

Tarrant is exceptionally fit (more later);

Gibcus impressed me - a confident kid who is good below his knees - he isn't skinny but will still bulk up in the next few years. He is one of those rare players with a very good leap that times his jump beautifully and can hang in the air well above other players. He is also a nice kick, both in distance and accuracy. You can tell I was impressed;

Young Brown showed desire but was fumbly at times, missed a few targets and will need some reserve time (based on today);

Balta cruises in training. I couldn't help but compare him to Grimes who goes all out at all times when competing;

Sonsie is a solid kid who has the physique to play early, had clean hands but tired towards the end of training;

I was interested in Hardwick spending some time with just Biggy and Sampson, concentrating on body positioning in one on one marking and when to push off;

If training is an indication Edwards has lost not of his speed / reaction-time and is in for a good season if he can stay fit;

Dow is such a smooth mover - can be quite evasive (more later);

Soldo is a man mountain and was moving well given his injury;

Daniel Rioli has exquisite skills - I do not think he missed a single target;

Cumberland surprised me - I have watched a bit of him but today he had a very nice side-step and showed more than I expected;

Cotch was training as hard as anyone and looked like he was moving well during the session - was very encouraging to the other players;

RCD got caught several times in tackles (Aarts caught him at least three times) - RCD has the ability to handball off by keeping his arms up but he seemed to get caught too often. Personal opinion but I think he needs to lift his intensity - he didn't run hard at times though his disposal to leading targets was superb. He really could go either way - become an elite midfielder or drift out of the game - I honestly am not sure which;

Parker is one of my favourites with his pace and aggression - would be a star if he could kick accurately - unfortunately, he rarely does;

Pickett was fair - missed a few targets but it is pre-season

Grimes was the best for me at training - I do not think he got beaten in a single marking contest during the drills - just fantastic to watch though he didn't play the match itself that I saw;

In terms of the game played, Teams were (and I couldn't get all the players):

A few comments:

Tarrant out-marked poor Ryan with ease, disposal was excellent and his communication outstanding;

Nankervis was sure-handed and took some nice marks in defence when dropping back;

Broad actually ran down from defence and kicked a goal;

Dusty played midfield and did as Dusty does - moved well and got a ton of the ball;

M. Rioli was quiet but he is so young and will need time

Dow can step around just about anyone but what I liked today was that he got a lot more of the ball - good signs

Hope that was worth the read - will not be back next week as I could not stand ejection/rejection twice lol

Dear @sezza,

In the words of John Lennon

"I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group PRE and ourselves myself, I hope think we've you've passed the audition."

Thanks mate for the effort and input. We resigned ourselves for no training report for two weeks. That was a nice surprise.

@sezza, sensational report. Resetting the standard for caesar on this return!!

FYI, pretty sure caesar watches from the street which is why you probably got the boot

How did the Nank v Soldo ruck dual turn out? Did either out do the other?

I thought they were even at centre bounces but Nank held sway around the ground - Soldo looked ok though after such an injury lay off

Mansell is too brave for his own good, even at training - taking marks when he could have been smashed - tough boy

Nankervis was sure-handed and took some nice marks in defence when dropping back;

Broad actually ran down from defence and kicked a goal;

Dusty played midfield and did as Dusty does - moved well and got a ton of the ball;

M. Rioli was quiet but he is so young and will need time

Dow can step around just about anyone but what I liked today was that he got a lot more of the ball - good signs

Hope that was worth the read - will not be back next week as I could not stand ejection/rejection twice lol

And Tim Livingstone, I don't think I gave away any secrets (that couldn't be seen from outside the fence!)
Tim Livingstone should be ashamed
