Training for DRAFT PICKS!!!!

Training stepped up today.

Yes Marlion was there:clap2
Absent was CJ.
Rehab: Garth Soldo Cumberland Bashar
Injury: Biggie hobbled off early with what appeared to be an ankle and did not return, didn't look serious? I don't want to see Syndesmosis mentioned anywhere in an injury report.

After 20 minute warm up players in 3 groups were put through about 5 sets of shuttles alternating, after a 30 sec break, with equivalent number of full ground sprints.
I'll stop commenting on who does poorly in these as it does not necessarily equate to how they perform in match sim. Some lagged in the shuttles yet excelled in the full ground sprints. King of Kings when exhaustion set in were Dion and Kmac.
Egg appears to be gaining a bit of fitness compared to his previous results which was a bit of a surprise.

I have noticed this season there has been way more drills concentrated on forward entry delivery.
One is where they split into 4 groups set up at both ends of the ground split between wing and half forward. Ball is either thrown in or balled up and they go from there paired equally in yellow and red vest teams.
They do something similar from the wing but it starts with kicking.

Probably looked as sharp I have seen them this pre-season.

They then did about 20 minutes of what I would call advanced circle work continual movement hardly pausing for breath.

Then the smalls split into 2 groups did in close competitive handball keeping off drills. The talls were doing one on one contested marking.

2 AFL umpires were available throughout to impart their wisdom:)

The session culminated in a 2 x 15 minute contested match sim.

Mabs BOG: looked sensational around the ground with both his marking, ground work and beautiful left foot delivery.
DRioli: Was very sharp, maybe 2 goals 1 I think.
Balta: Is a competitive beast.
Shai: Sat out quite a few drills today so I were a tad worried but then match sim happened and I just smiled.
Ross : Good
RCD: Pretty good, just missed a couple of targets by foot, happy with his overlap run today.
Caddy: Seemed to be playing half back performed quite well.
Best of the trialists: Egg which you would expect because he knows our system, Mansell maybe next?

I don't need to comment on our A listers as we know what they bring.

Junior: Just love seeing him out there but a long way to go, I am waiting for something freakish from him to report.

That's it folks.

An update from Thursday's training, after posting saying Dion was killing it in the shuttles and full ground sprints I realized that I had not noticed him in the 2nd half of training which included the match sim. On Saturday he was completely absent from training. Today he was in rehab only doing 30 min's very slow straight line jogging:confused:.

Must be minor or else he wouldn't be back running 3 days later. Sounds more precautionary than anything

Had the pleasure of standing with Caesar watching training this morning. As knowledgeable and insightful in person as on the page. I may be partly to blame for his short report today, distracting him with my questions

if you can make it to PRO on a Monday or Thursday morning, I would recommend it - pretty good view from Punt Road, even to the far side of the ground; right on top of rehab training, and the other boys are now really ramping things up.

Anything noteworthy from training that you can share?

Biggie and CJ were both back training Sat and today after I mentioned their absence and possible injury to Biggie on Thurs.
CJ looking better as the pre-season rolls on.
Age shall not weary Shedda, a genuine marvel.
Will Martyn looking in amazing shape, seems to be dancing across the turf compared to 14 months ago where his movement seemed a bit heavy?
Noticed Riley a bit today in the clinches and a couple of bursts from packs.
Wish I were reporting on Hugo a bit more, certainly fit enough but at this stage hasn't really stood out.
Daniel looking like he could take his game to another level, already has 3 premiership medals at the age of 23 but if he can just up his numbers in addition to the great pressure he applies.
Caddy back to training more mid.
Lambo probably going at about 90% now after hip surgery.
Still don't know who is going to play half back if Houli doesn't come up.

PS. A mystery player wearing the number 13 was training with us today, (another small), so whether he is another trial invitee I am not quite sure. (later confirmed by other posters as ex Crow Jordan Galluci)

Training definitely progressing towards more competitive/contested work.

If you were to make a call now. If a mid spot opens up, who plays first Dow, Martyn, RCD or Caddy in that role?

Thanks Caesar - much appreciated. The new kid is likely to an AFL Academy member. They head to AFL clubs for a week or so in pre-season. Its like work experience. Cotchin & Lennon both did the same thing with us before they were drafted

I want to get something off my chest.

womens footy has taken over RFC.com.

This time of year, I'm usually pursuing photos of mens training, and reading about whose flying.

But the content is 90% (I counted) WAFL.

Now im supportive of WAFL. I think its imperative and great that there is a pathway to a big league for 50% of the population.

But I dont enjoy watching it (I expect this to change when Ms. Rioli debuts). I've been honest with the club on the last 2 fan surveys (Supportive, but not really interested)

and I am a bit annoyed its relegated the information feed on the men

I know it needs promoting and the women are playing now and the men aren't and theres a small window.

I get it.

But the fact that its at the expense of media on the men is, rightly or wrongly (probably wrongly), producing an animosity in me towards WAFL.

I'd be comfortable with a 60/40 split in favour of WAFL and I dont mind scrolling down to see a video of the blokes training.

Im well aware my POV may be behind the times and out of step with a bigger picture at RFC.

But im being honest with you.
Have just seen this mate & agree 100%.
All for the club promoting AFLW this year but it's definitely at the expense of the usual frivolous news we get re the men's team.
If the club has had to cut it's media department (no doubt) then it still should be providing info on the men's team. This is still far & away what most people are interested in & we've been given stuff all, Caesar aside. It's not imagined & do you you think you can speak up about it & anyone will listen? Fat chance.

This mystery player wasn't Mackenzie Cowley by any chance?

like I said, I suspect the club hasn't listened to the fan survey.

Im not privy to the the data, but I'd be astonished if 1% of respondents circled 1 - not very interested for RFC men and 10 - obsessed for womens team?

Ive taken TF17's advice, and let it through to the keeper. We've got @caesar, and he only costs a schooner a year for an extremely high quality, insightful feed, and doesn't send the debt collectors around when youre 3 years in arrears.

I reckon it could be out of RFC hands. Other clubs web sites and AFL.com seem the same.

I'd say its an edict from the top, as in ' Dear Pres. we need to sell some tickets and ratings to WAFL. 90% WAFL content across media Jan-Feb please, Gil)

Not in your above options but Ross would be 1st cab off the rank for mine, I really need to see a full on scratch match to get my pecking orders and some VFL games would be nice.
