Training For 2023

Great to catch up with @caesar and @The Mole at training this morning. @caesar said it was our turn to do a report but no way known we can match his reporting, so just some random points while he puts his full report together.
From what I observed today I’m confident that Lynch, Prestia and Graham will all be fit for Rd 1.
Lynch particularly trained strongly.
Dusty just being Dusty, looking very fit, play of the day was Dusty to Cotch to Dion for a goal.
Ryan and Miller doing some handy ruckwork and both potential candidates to fill the hybrid ruck/forward role
Couple of strong tackles, Hugo on Jnr sling tackle (perhaps reportable on match day?) followed up later by Balta on Hugo. Balta thought he’d injured him at first but he got up and limped away, probably ok.
Bradtke and Young very athletic
Came away confident we are on track for a big year.
Over to @caesar for detailed report please!

cant see him missing round 1 unless he has a setback

The question won't be whether or not he can play round one, it's whether or not he should.

A seasoned athlete can get to a fitness level to play a game of footy pretty quickly, it's the preparation and conditioning of their body to withstand the rigour of a whole season that is the key.

Alex Rance could turn up tomorrow and be ready to play round one for example, but I'd have my house on him being injured by round 10.

The question with Lynch is do you play him in round one and try and manage him through or do you sit him down and give him the time to properly prepare his body before he begins.

Wasn't a match sim game as such but plenty of match sim drills and 150 minutes of robust training.
If you are a football purist I would say you would have got more out of watching a full on training and what we are working on than watching matc sim anyway.
I was there & enjoyed every bit of it. IMO we'll learn more from today than a match sim where the "probables" smash the "possibles" by 10+ goals. It was a great insight for someone like that that never gets to go to training to see what we have been working on in terms of specifics etc.

Good work @Billy24 . Was a pleasure to watch with you and @caesar.
My highlight was watching Dusty dominate. With reference Robbo's article in today's HUN, the hunger is definitely there. another play had Dusty compete in the air with two big defenders and numerous others at CHF, only to bring the ball to ground and somehow back out of the pack and run around to kick a goal which left us saying "how did he do that". Just wow!
Cotch was speedy and clean and is clearly having a great preseason.
Prestia did the full ground drills and was looking good and knocking up getting possessions, as was partner-in-crime, Taranto.
Hopper and Dow both did some nice things and were involved.
Honorable mentions to Tylar Young who was very solid and athletic, Ben Miller who competed extremely well and was composed, and new recruit Kaelen Bradtke who's athleticism was on show - he actually looked much more confident than when I saw him a few weeks ago.
Missing from training were Bakes, Bauer, Kaleb Smith and Gibcus (who was sitting on the bench)
It's clear a major focus of this preseason is stoppage clearances around the ground and at boundary throw-ins. There would have been at least 50 of these where there was a concentration on set ups and defence. Expect this aspect of our game to be very much stronger this year.

I can see where you are coming from TBR. But on the flip side being a seasoned player he would also have that layer of conditioning to go with the fitness. He might need some managing through the early rounds where his workfload is to a lower intensity during the weekdays. Even these match sims are nothing like real game intensity. With the right program he should be ok.

My 1st crack a training report so here are some takeways from today. it was a drills based session as opposed to a full on match sim, which as above was good to see what we are working on specifically & is IMO better than having a match where "probables" smash the "possibles" by 10+ goals.

Rehab - Colina, Broad (who looked like a midget while doing laps alongside Colina) Laps for all consisted of jogging & sprinting between cones from what i could tell. Bauer was in a moon boot as is Smith, Gibcus & George were the only 2 who didn't do any running at all as well as the guys in moon boots (Smith & Bauer). Lynch & Sonz did the warmup with the main group but were on light duties thereafter with Graham & Soldo, they were doing sprints etc so looks more a management thing than anything else. I got the scoop from Sonz himself, he's got a hip flexor strain but said he's not too far away & looked to be moving well. Campbell also in rehab but was doing a lot of running so it can't be a major issue keeping him out. Lynch/Graham/Sonsie, for 1 drill were doing 50m kicks to top of the sqr for the the tall fwds Jack/Mill/Bradt to fist ball to the ground for the crumbers to do their thing.

Grimes & Prestia did around half the session with the main group then did laps thereafter so i'd say they are both easing back in & i got no idea if they'd play next week or not but being conservative i'd guess the Dees game would be the go for those 2.

Dusty - deserves his own section, a few sublime kicks, he'll prove a few haters wrong this yr just based on how he went today. with F50 entries he was often used as the player that kicks inside 50 & we all know what a weapon he can be in that role. Gave Tarrant a "don't argue", on another occasion he did a spin turn out of traffic inside 50 & gave off for a team mate for a goal. During a D50 to F50 drill which went for a goal as it went through Dusty had his own ball & kicked that through.

Stoppages - as mentioned above a heavy focus on around the ground stoppages for D50 & F50 into re-entry scenarios, at one stage here D.Rioli took an uncontested intercept mark about 70-80 from goal with Banks nearest to him, Dimma yelled "free kick to Banks for too high". Not sure if Dimma is angling for a gig an as ump post Coaching but he's just as good at pulling free kicks from you know where as the umps are themselves. he did pay a free to a Richmond player tho so they won't look at him but it was also against a Richmond player for nothing so who knows.

K.Bradtke - took a brilliant contested mark 1v1. Bodywork was sublime so i can see why he's been picked up, he has a lot to work with.

Also a shoutout to Biggie who took a few intercept marks & spoils, incl a contest where dusty had his man covered in a 1v1 & Biggie came in 3rd man up & smashed the ball over the line.

That's main takeaways, not doing full on match sim does make sense given it's a 6 day break till the Norf game.

Training Today Saturday:

*Leaving training today i found myself singing 'GOOD VIBRATIONS!' :)

It was not a match sim game but plenty of match sim drills done at high intensity.

From a purist point of view today was magic and you would have gone away with a better concept of what the boys do at training from week to week and what we are working on. I challenge anyone who was there to say the boys haven't been working as hard this pre-season:rolleyes:

Not having match sim allowed us to see the ENORMOUS amout of work , (mainly running), big Tom & Fridge were doing today, they were at it for 120 minutes and also did the 20 minute ball warm up drills and a couple of other small drills as well. Lynch did 10 minutes of contested marking in the square and also one were he was a lead up forward going as far as the wing and doubling back. (I am 90% he plays round 1)

Grimes and Prestia : Thursday I said they did 100% & 80% respectively of low intensity 90 minute session, today i'm saying they did 80% of a 150 minute high intensity session. (Reckon they are 100% good to go baring any setbacks). I think they may sit out the North match sim? but will be participate in the Melbourne game.

Dusty : The whole football world is going to be stunned when they witness Dusty's early impact and be reminded of the star he is. Even in my own mind i were happy to accept a 70% Dusty going forward, that still would have been a big pass mark and massive bonus on last year but I am tending toward a distinction grading by years end :) . He did a Don't Argue on Tarrant like he was Caleb Daniel today too, he was awesome.

DRioli : Brilliant, can he get even better?, all pre he has been the initiator of runs out of defence and continuing the chain with multiple overlaps forward of centre.

Cotch: Moving the best i have seen for years, I didn't picture him as a forward as such but he was the first to read the drop of the ball multiple times today and looked dangerous, may well feature high on goal assist category this year?

Miller: Looking better every session, confidence if not already sky high is building.

Tylar Young : Keeps impressing me this kid, will be able to come in and do a job if some soldiers go down IMO with scope beyond that when he is further schooled in our game plan and nuances of structure. I really aren't seeing too many weaknesses, massive leap and spoil today, quick closing speed and good kick. I am not saying he starred as defenders rarely do but he has the tools.

Bradtke : Noticeable for the first time for me today, worked well up to the wing and involved in a couple of chains, and one beautiful clean pick up and split second over his shoulder handball onto a running player. Now this was either the work of a player that does have some natural football talent or it was a panicked no look fluke handball that found it's target;)

Cumberland: Was back training with main group.

Taranto : Just 'The Everywhere Man'

Shai : Took a bit of a holiday today, seems he saves his best for my eyes only;)

Midfield Depth: Now runs deep and provides so many options and dynamics, going to be exciting to watch. I keep watching Jack Ross and seeing how well he is training, (again I say the hardest worker this pre-season), but asking myself how do you fit him in. Ditto Graham, Sonsie when fit.

Rehab/Management : I do think there may be some change how they are operating this year in terms of management? maybe they are putting in some running blocks for players that have had issues in the past? A conclusion only guided by many non inclusions on injury list?

Sonsie: Was running at higher intensity today and did the warm up ball skills but I still have no idea what the go is there.

Broad: Running ok
Baker : We wondered about his absence but appendix removal explains that.
Seth Cambell: Looks close to returning to main group.

Biggest takeway from training today : Amongst all the other drills the players did today they would have done about 50 around the ground stoppage contests in all parts of the ground, except centre clearances of which there was basically none.

Hugo :
Did a very uncool sling tackle on MJ, reckon he would of got a week in season proper?

Was very pleased to watch proceedings with @Billy24 & @The Mole who have provided their own independent observations above.

Cheers

Got the scoop from the Sonz himself today, it's a hip flexor strain, he did say he's not far away & was moving well today as you'd have seen. I was indeed amazed just how much running our guys do, even the guys in rehab. 1 thing which i forgot to add in my report was how quick they are at the handball circle work drill where they are on a ground which is basically a 20m square & it's keepings off.

Good stuff @Jonesracing82 great for the forum to get some alternative reports and views(y)

Just on Lynch, i differ a bit to you i thought Lynch did a power of work, remember it was 150 minute session, I would say he was either doing some light drills or running for 120 minutes of it. Were you on the Grandstand side of under the scoreboard on the hill. Lynch and Jack Graham were basically going toe to toe today in both their lap running and some sprinting at full pace in front of us on the hill.

Cheers

Good intel on Sonz, and yet not on latest club injury report after being in rehab for a month.

Thanks(y)

I was on scoreboard side so the rehab group was right in front of me, which is how i was lucky enough to ask Sonz whats going on. When i say Lynch etc were on light duties i should have clarified , not doing drills etc, as u mentioned they did a power of running. That was my biggest learning from today, the rehab guys do a LOT of running incl sprints. "light duties" not really that "light".
