Time for new assistants

It's a miraculous phenomena, I've seen great coaches with great players but I've never seen a great coach with ordinary players.

No such thing as luck in football success though.

I agree the self-perpetuating nature of sustained team sport success, such as Richmonds, is miraculous

But I also think luck plays a huge part in every aspect of life, including sport.

and the notion of 'making your own luck',

is pretty non-sensical, because luck can not be manufactured or captured by its definition.

It's often a version of victim blaming.

I reckon Kobe Bryant would have agreed with me, in the end.

and I reckon Anthony Stevens would have punched anyone in the face, if they suggested he made his own luck,

when a window from a high rise cut his face off,

especially if Wayne Carey said it :peepwall

It was Leppa who argued long and hard for one tall and five smalls early in 2017 despite Dimma's insistence we needed two talls.

Injuries helped Leppa's cause and the rest is history.
He also devised the general backline strategy and game plan that, as Alex Rance highlighted, meant that any opposition forward line we came up against we had complete faith in the system being able to handle it - no matter what personell and match ups were involved.

agree.

im pretty sure thats what I said
Yeah but with your comment “but his great mind took Brisbane to 15th, 17th and 17th in his 3 years in charge” its easy to think you thought he was just perfunctory or lucky to come along for the ride.

He’s been really important.

agree 100% he was a VIP. To be clear, ive been a huge fan of Leppa since about 1998.

my pointing out his Brisbane coaching record was to highlight what a great team Richmond assembled.

Leppa was essentially the same man that finished 16th, 17th and 17th,

as the man who finished 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3d, 1st, 1st.

Im pretty sure we are in furious agreement.

They say luck is where hard work and opportunity meet. You can't manufacture luck but if you're working hard to a plan opportunity will come.

yeah but thats not luck.

luck is when either something really good happens completely randomly, independent of other variables like hard work, or opportunity,

or something really bad doesnt randomly happen,

like some adhd bloke sliding into you and rupturing your kidney, for example.

the 'harder i work, the luckier i get' fridge magnet,

is middle-class social darwinism.

COVID and the AFL's push for equalisation has hurt us big time.

We are the biggest club in the land yet we are made to play with the same budget as the minnows like Norf and Carlton.
This is why the club wasn’t happy about the soft cap, cuts.
we had built a great off field program, others were the envy of.
but the AFL had knee capped us.

So basically McQualter is in the gun. our ball movement goimng forward this season reminds me of the Richo days. Benny Hill music stuff
Our connection between midfield and forward is at its worst point in 4 years , personnel have a bit to do with it however we’ve rarely found a rhythm

I reckon you and I could've coached that star-studded lineup in its peak.
Look at Norths ball movement. For an 18th placed side it looks better than ours. I honestly believe we haven't evolved with the new rules.
Dogs and Cats ball movement is great. the connection between their midfield and forwards is there for all to see.
Bottom line our weakest lines this year has been the midfield and forwards, and I reckon we need fresh blood with new ideas.
Start studded ??, our biggest compliment is we are a role based team, not a team of stars

2017 Towner, Broady, Graham, George, Houli, Ellis, Grigg, Astbury, Rioli, Lambo, Grimes, Butler, Cadds, Nank , Kapsy, Tigga - good players even very good players at the time but not stars.

2019 add Soldo, Marlion, Bakes, Shai , not exactly stars

2020 Noah, not exactly a star, very good player

I agree we possibly need some fresh ideas & a change of game plan, but I cant agree we are star studded

I will admit to wearing a huge *smile* eating grin whilst typing the names of these LEGEND PREMIERSHIP TIGERS, you *smile* beauty

There's been plenty of " great " coaches with ordinary players over the years. Those ordinary players usually pull those great coaches off their pedestals in a big hurry though.

Question for pondering though.
Considering the very few AA players during our era, compared to Brisvegas, Moggies, Hawforn. Plus the limited recognition by the experts of our individual players during this period.
Does that make Dimma a great coach for getting three flags with a bunch of mainly " ordinary " players?

Doesn't help much that our intercept n rebound back line has been decimated as well.
Continual roll out of injuries has destroyed any chance of building system n consistency this year. Happy enough to see the end of this year, take a couple of deep breaths n summer hiatus.
More than certain we've still got enough of a side to seriously contend again with a half decent run from the injury gods.

I hear where you are coming from but I too can go through every team and pick out their above-average players, as you just did with our team.
But our top end on every line was absolute elite. Then add on Caracellas game plan and the connection instilled by dimma to the players and you have a champion team.
Yes, we are a system based team but do you really think our team would be winning flags based more so on role players? It's the elite talent that gets you over the line. Dusty, Houli, Rance, Riewoldt, Lynch, Cotchin, Grimes, Vlustuin, Edwards, Prestia, etc

Lmao the point i made was we had stars on every line that's true , they wouldn't be hard to coach, oh btw "I didn't say we had 22 stars in our team". You made out like we have more role players that decide games that's just laughable, the bottom line is your stars get you to glory, happens in every sport.

Furthermore, you are getting away from the main point, it's 2021 my point stands that McQualter is running the programs for our midfield and forwards and have been our weakest lines. How about 2020 before finals we were pretty bad for clearances and stoppages. Adam Kingsley devises a plan to improve our clearance work, bang we go No 1 in the finals as we couldn't just rely on scoring from the back half by forcing turnovers.

spot on mate.

Do you think I'm a chance ?

that must have been an amazing experience in the box.

Im sure you detailed it at the time, but I missed it.

Would you indulge us with the story and insights again or give us a link to the account?

I kept it pretty quiet at the time, but after that day I was convinced Dimma was an outstanding coach.

It was a *smile* game against GC @ the G, Dimma pulled the reins in the last 10 minutes & his 3 moves paid straight off.

  1. Left Dusty on the ground when he was due to come off.
  2. Pushed Hammer forward & he either kicked a goal or set Dusty up for a goal, maybe both, cat recall now
  3. Released Conca from his tagging job on Gablett

He also had a blue with Brendan Lade, as Lade wouldn't take Reece of Gablett, he said & I quote

"*smile* hell Ladey, I've told you 3 *smile* times, let Reece play"

best ever footy experience

Edit:

The whole experience was great, started off on the Thursday when I was introduced to the whole playing/coaching group in the GR Room, my name up on the screen etc.
Poor old Broady, saw me (I was his only sponsor in 2016) and he assumed I was there as they were going to announce his debut :)
Then sat with them for the oppo analysis meeting.
Wilbur Williams then took me up into the JD stand on 3 or 4 occasions & was explaining the game plan & reiterating what was spoken about at oppo meeting.
Game day, was escorted around by Jacka Smith & or Dan Richardson, couldn't go onto ground after the 2nd pre game siren, so was downstairs in warm up room with Broady as he was emergency and also not allowed on ground after that siren.

Only day at footy I havent had a beer :)

I loved every moment

they're the same bunch that won the 2020 flag.

McQualter is a double agent

im pretty sure he hand embroidered Shockings wifes wedding dress
2017 Assistant coach, midfield/stoppage: Andrew McQualter
2018 Assistant coach, midfield/stoppage: Andrew McQualter
2019 Assistant coach, forwards: Andrew McQualter
2020 Assistant coach, midfield/offensive: Andrew McQualter
2021 Assistant coach, forwards: Andrew McQualter

has a decent 4 years out of 5
He, like all good double agents, was playing the long game, building trust, before taking us down from the inside.
