What effect is this constant barrage of negative reporting and other incidents having on the mental health of our team?

It is relenting. First we had the non stop pilloring of the Cotchins over the beauty parlour visit.

The breaches by others from other teams and wags hardly raised an eyebrow.

Then we have the hard line criticisms of Mitch Robinson and David Schwartz.

That is nothing compared to the constant media attention given to Tom Lynch.

Now he is to be tried and no doubt hung out to dry by the tribunal, thanks to the MRO sending him there.

Also we have two players in Grimes and Vlastuin being virtually labelled as sporting cheats.

As we know Grimes received death threats. Is there an investigation into who sent them?

We all know of players who are renowned for "flopping" as it was called, especially at one particular club. No action ever taken.

So, what effect is all of this, in particular the media, having on the mental well being of our players and will it affect their playing ability.

As a life long RFC member, I almost feel like it is affecting me by association, so how are the players reacting?

"Like the Tigers of old we're strong and we're bold" - this will bring the players together - galvanise the club - back to the hedonistic days of US against the rest.

It's no longer beware the wounded Tiger - it is beware the emboldened Tiger pack!

Eat 'em Alive!

You forgot being accused of making excess demands for stuff in the Hub - staff, players and Wags .
Jack R said it was rubbish and had mayo put on it

Meh, this happens every tie we play Essendon. Tim Watson uses his various media platforms during the three weeks preceding to try to get a few Tigers suspended for the Essendon game and the following week he uses them to while about all the injustices that occurred during the game.

Hope you are doing ok mate - I agree with you.I deal with my anxiety & frustration here - type long winded, ego-pieces - i know - but it makes me at least get it out and feel like its heard, somewhat. Do whatever you have to get it out & try and use the fury for something positive elsewhere.

Its deplorable that essentially the league is driving this, especially in a year where everyone is struggling above the shoulders. Suicide rates have sky rocketed. We have literally felt it first hand with Danny & Shane. Their deaths hang over me as i was there every week during that era and fully remember the toxic attacks and culture of the era. My biggest pride in the RFC is - we are no longer this club. This year, the club has had to tell very loyal servants like Dale Weightman that at 60 years old - 6 years of his retirement age - they are no longer required. Making decisions like that are incredibly taxing and hard to do. I cannot believe the negativity that is being pushed out to us - the NBA is operating under way more strenuous circumstances & NONE of the teams, players involved are coping this *smile*. They are being massively applauded, celebrated & thanked. Even America is less of a Karen than Australia right now.

Its *smile* deplorable.

But together we stand tall. Fight. Pump a fist & never give in to bullying. I personally wish the season would just be called off as i hate it so much. But as long as its still going, I will stay engaged and support my team in the pathetic little way i know how - here.

If we can pull ourselves together and win this flag - it will be the the most inspirational victory in AFL history. Never has a team had to fight so many different forces to play "a fair game".

More proof of the AFL labelling people with derogatory titles - which classifies as bullying in all other work places. Its important to know this article is not via the free-media, this is on the AFLS official website.

How is this allowed? What value is there in labelling people sooks and whingers for voicing their opinion or trying to protect their clusb interest?

Its flat out, old fashioned bullying. No other sport covers their own game this way on their own website. Its sickening behaviour by a self-anointed, apparent "woke" institution. They are a rabble:vomit:bash

What a horrible article by someone I have seriously yet to see any actual journalistic talent from. " Clarkson sooking it up." This from the Leagues own employed journalist. Wow.

Around 200 AFL journos, 75 odd ex-players plus all the 100s of media hangers on all making their living from the game and about 4 interesting stories a week. No wonder so much *smile* gets written.

AFL themselves have over 100 in their media department

When someone whinges about the AFL media these days >500 people take offence! Odds aren't stacked in your favour.

What a lame excuse. Seriously, I could think of about 10 things a week i could write about re the AFL that wouldn't have to be a negative, reality tv show-esque pile of drivel.

If you want a good example of good, positive sports journalism getting pumped out by the truckload week in week out. visit The Ringer. Or listen to Bill Simmons and his podcast network, The ringer, they do literaly hours and hours of content every week that does not rely on this low brow kind of horseshit. Even in the 4 month period where the NBA was in hiatus, they kept up the content, not resorting to mindless gossip and drivel. They did podcast rewatchables of classic games and playoffs - breaking down the key moments, the changes in the game. The did re-drafts of every season from 1998 to now, with intelligent and also very amusing analysis. They treat their fans with a certain level of respect that they are not just low-brow scum. It so popular and highly regarded, the podcast network was just bought by Spotify for a lazy $200,000,000 USD. People are not as dumb as you think, clearly.

AFL reporting is the worst of any league in the world. Even the US is miles above us. They actually respect their stars, their readers and sports fans. Our media unfortunately seems set to follow the English Premier league style of reporting. New Idea's for male sports fan, gossip pages.

The type of *smile* they write is targeted to the lowest denominator of the public. Thats how they clearly see AFL fans. As dumbshits.

AFL sports reporting, podcasting etc etc etc is miles behind the curb. Its actually embarrassing to the audience.

In saying all that, one AFL series i highly recommend to those who want something more from their AFL reporting - watch the plethora of "The Final Story" doco's that were made that revisited past grand finals, speaking to the coaches, players involved. Probably the best AFL content i have seen.

Why not start with 1980

For the first part I'd be super confident the answer is not at all. They would barely even be aware of it, especially in the hub. Very few players consume footy media, the ones who do are usually the young guys who are still part fans or guys who are ambitious for a media career like a Jack Riewoldt.

The people I genuinely worry for are the supporters. I see some of the consistent posts on here with people complaining about the umpires or the AFL or the media and the sense I get is they are getting worked up to the point of being so frustrated they are losing the joy of the game. I find that really heart breaking.
I think the living conditions here in Victoria has a lot to do with it.

Yeah, I'm sure the younger players would be advised that the social media world is full of nuff-nuffs and to stay away from it as much as possible, or at least take it with a grain of salt.

When people are talking about fury and rage over the AFL and saying they get no joy at all out of the game this season then something is wrong. There are bigger problems in the world than this (sacreligious to say this on a football forum I know).
