Tigers 2012 - Hopes and prospects...

Couldn't disagree more. So we get a couple more Miller's? Like Baker/McQualter etc? Pointless short-term thinking that's failed in the past. We need to build the foundations for long-term success. I'm not suggesting we do not aim for finals because it is a realistic goal given the talent of our youth. But we were lucky no key players were injured this year. I'd rather see us invest in 22 or 23 yr olds from state leagues or even tried AFL players under 23 than older experienced types. We didn't lose every week this year and we won't next year, but we have the opportunity to build a list that will see sustained success. It's not about lying low, nor setting the bar high, its about building a list. We've had it wrong for decades and are just getting it right, why go backwards again?

agree.
we need to keep adding good (young) players. and all over the field. we potentially have good players now for all positions, but we also lack depth in all positions. we need to keep adding quality kids.

also while we need to aim for finals, and IMO we are a good chance for next year, we need to keep in mind teams progress is not always a smooth improvement- look at the dees and roos this year for example. another year finishing mid-table, whilst disappointing, will not necessarily mean we are not on the right track.

This sounds like a true BOD meeting, all talk and no action. ;D

Yeah we'll do it.....yeah.....yep sounds great.....yeah...agree....yep.....what are those 2 old muppets called again??

We need to approach the AFL and work out a draw where we play GWS, GC Suns, Brisbane & Port Adelaide early on in the season at home rather than another start like Blues, Hawks, Pies & Saints. If we get on a roll early on it is much easier to sustain than to start of 0 - 4 every year.
...

like 2005? :help

We need to play finals in 2012. Whether the club likes it or not, 6 ninth finishes in the last 20 years, only two finals appearances and ten years in the wilderness is enough. This club does not have much credit left in the bank.

If they need to shore up the team with experienced players to achieve this goal, then so be it. The only thing that young players learn by losing every week is that they are not good enough. Get a couple of ruckmen, find a defender or two, pay out some contracts if need be, do whatever it takes.

It is time to ramp up expectation and deliver.

This notion of lying low until we have built a Premiership squad is nonsense. Climb the ladder and build on the run, just like all the other successful teams have done.

Sounds a lot like a short cut

We've been on the scenic route for 30 years, sometimes going so slow the little old ladies in the pensioner lane have overtaken us.

Our friends at Collingwood have taken a few shortcuts recently, trading early picks for Cameron Wood, Darren Jolly, Luke Ball, Andrew Krakouer and Chris Tarrant. Maybe we need to take some similar short cuts as well?

Were they are a little ahead than where we are at right now when they got Jolly & Ball? Maybe in 2014 or 2015 we could be looking at bringing in experienced quality (ie not a Miller type) older players on a needs basis but right now we can add to our youth. Not all picks will work out and we still need to increase the depth. In 2014 or 2015 we could have a well balanced list with the right mix of experience and youth.

I would love to see us in 2014 with a list that has Foley as our oldest player. He will turn 29 that year. Guys like Newman/King will likely be done and dusted. Foley/Deledio/Cotchin/Vickery/Grimes/Rance will be the core of the leadership group. No more false prophets (jackson). Martin will be a leader in the brooding Brando mould. Reckon we don't need to bring in new experiencd voices right now, let the kids develop together and watch them grow.

Good bet Conca and Astbury (assuming they make the grade) will be leaders around the place too from what you hear.

All of this would work under Dimma and not under a new coach. I reckon if we finish no lower than 11th next season, we have to bite the bullett and extend his contract for 2 years.

Agree. Some on here still cling to romantic theory of the saviour in Sheedy or a Malthouse coming home to save Punt Road. There is no doubt Malthouse is an excellent coach, but people seem to forget how long it took him to get Collingwood where it is today. We also need to remember the financial resources he has at his disposal, not to mention support staff. We are just starting to implement a system that will provide the support base for sustained success yet some still want to talk about sacking another coach if we don't make finals by 2012.

We have seen a huge improvement both on field and off field over the last 12 months so let's let the improvement continue. The coaching staff r young and learning, they won't get everything right, but let's at least allow them to try.

The club has indicated that it's keen to implement a mentor to help develop the coaching staff which is a good move to strengthen the coaching panel, not to mention additional development coaches etc.

I think if we got Malthouse, a director of coaching would be an ideal role to develop the whole club.

Have our chances of winning games against team that have just appointed untried coaches?? Don't know but I am hoping :)

Hope so. It'd be nice for all the clubs, who have appointed new coaches, to take a year to learn a new game plan and suck as badly as we did in 2010.

Spot on.

Question for everyone on their expectations. What are they if we happen to get a few long-term injuries to our stars? This year our out and out guns didnt miss a game. Riewoldt, Vickery, Deledio, Martin, Cotchin, Foley, Nahas and Houli all played 22 games. A few big injuries will set us back IMO. If we finish bottom 2 or 3 with 3 or 4 of those guys missing over half the season would people be angry or accept that we don't have the depth/experience to cover this?
