James Caan, RIP.
Just listened to The Rewatchables’ Misery pod, which was excellent.

Caan nailed the role. Obviously out-shone by Bates but still superb.

He was stiff not to win a statue for The Godfather but he wasn’t helped that he was up against two co-stars.

Love James Caan in the GF - maybe my favourite 2 movies of all time. Ah geez.

“One hundred men on the street 24 hours a day. If that Turk pokes a hair out, he’s a dead man.”

Oh Santino.

Yeah loved that film, Caan was great... his facial reactions - trying to hide the fact that he knows Bate's character is bonkers was hilarious

They wanted De Niro to play Sonny but he was busy with (I think) Taxi Driver, so they got Caan, and thank god they did. Sonny was my favourite character and Caan was magnificent in the role.

"Hey, whaddya gonna do, nice college boy, eh? Didn't want to get mixed up in the Family business, huh? Now you wanna gun down a police captain. Why? Because he slapped ya in the face a little bit? Hah? What do you think this is the Army, where you shoot 'em a mile away? You've gotta get up close like this and—'bada-BING!—'you blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit. C'mere..."

50th anniversary of the first film's release this year. They don't make 'em like they used to.

They actually wanted De Niro to play Paulie “hey, you ain’t gunna see him no more”. De Niro ended up doing The Gang The Couldn’t Shoot Straight replacing Pacino who had signed to do that film.

Ah - Bob auditioned for Sonny, but Coppola chose Caan.

Lucky they traded him out of the pissy Paulie role otherwise we’d have never seen him as Vito in GF 2.

Which is better: 1 or 2 ? Tough call.

Mr Caan lived a great life. A regular at Heff's pad. He'd have had some stories to tell.

Caan also played an uncredited role in one of the Caronia episodes of Get Smart. He and Don Addams were friends, and Addams wanted him to do the show, but he’d only do it if he was uncredited. He played Rupert of Rathskeller, a villain and was credited as Himself.
