Caan nailed the role. Obviously out-shone by Bates but still superb.
He was stiff not to win a statue for The Godfather but he wasn’t helped that he was up against two co-stars.

They actually wanted De Niro to play Paulie “hey, you ain’t gunna see him no more”. De Niro ended up doing The Gang The Couldn’t Shoot Straight replacing Pacino who had signed to do that film.They wanted De Niro to play Sonny but he was busy with (I think) Taxi Driver, so they got Caan, and thank god they did. Sonny was my favourite character and Caan was magnificent in the role.
