Fortunately we were lucky enough to recover quickly from it and get back to where we are, largely by demoting the people responsible.

Carlton were always going to trade Yarran.

Carlton could have helped Yarran get to his club of choice, on day one of trading, for a fair pick.
Instead, Carlton dragged out negotiations till the last day of the draft, before accepting the fair pick offered on day one.

Is that how you treat a player with issues (created under your watch)?
Treat the damaged person purely like a commodity, stringing out the time before that person knows for sure that they can move on with their life?

Call it negotiating tough, or whatever you like .....
In the end, to me it is just another example of the terrible culture at Carlton ..... good luck Liddle!

At the end of the day Carlton just did what we and Yarran wanted. They got a pick, we got the player we wanted and Yarran got where he wanted to go.

Unfortunately we were the ones that botched the Yarran deal, zero blame on anyone else. Even if we didn't know about his off-field issues (which would make us the only people in the AFL), then his on-field behaviour should have been enough to never touch him.

Fortunately we were lucky enough to recover quickly from it and get back to where we are, largely by demoting the people responsible.

Yep I tend to agree. Carlton were holding out for a higher pick than #19 which the Tigers were trying to negotiate thus holding up the deal. Yarran indicated he wanted a fresh start. Sometimes that's all a player requires to get back on track. Didn't work out in the case of Yarran. We should have done our homework a bit better. As the Tigers said later, sometimes you have to take a risk to get the rewards and that was definitely how Tigers saw it with Yarran.

Yes totally agree

Compared to the tigers, most of our deals when a player wants to leave are done at the beginning of the draft and our approach is to look after the player in the first instance.

You can’t win every trade by a country mile - if you adopt that strategy like the bummers or blues, no one will want to trade with you.

. From memory Zips when Beams went to Brisbane his contract was heavily front loaded. The moment he got to the back end he wanted out hence Brisbane played it harder.

Beams was due on close to $500K for 2019/2020 season at Brisbane (received much more in his earlier years as alluded to). Apparently Collingwood, due to salary cap isues, needed to spread Beams 4 year contract salary over longer period so conceivably is on $400K a year.

Yes these front-loaded contracts are fraught with danger. Will probably happen with Jack Martin at Carlton too. First 2 years at $1mill per season. Wow.
