The Blueprint being used against us.

Could i add point 5 to a top analysis.
5. Defence outlets are squeezed at halfback.
We probs run it up the guts more than any other side, so have hawks n pies put more numbers there?
We didnt provide enough options and players presenting , like we were waiting for someone else to break free.

Both games we have looked for options, then gone very wide and then down the line.
They have starved our rebound run.

This was our great method.
We need a tweak to our positioning for rebound d50s

I agree, we are being blocked off, a but like we have done to other teams. Will being less rusty and more intensity fix this? Well it will to some extent but we just don't know if better form will break the deadlock or how some strategies will have to change.

Yeah,, good point. In both games, the other team ran the ball along the boundary while we tried to guard the corridor. Then they stopped us using the corridor and forced us wide, which we did not want to do.

I find it hard to believe this is the first time in 3y we have contended with numbers back to flood our forward line , so what’s the difference now

We are not scoring on turnovers like we did last year - ball movement is slower or we muck it up. Gives time for them to get back and flood

I reckon short Q is significant not allowing oppo to fatigue , we were all over hawks in final Q 17-2 i50 yet struggled to score for different reasons , like crap kicking for goal

yeah it's a big factor, both at end of quarters but also in the third and fouth as teams are less tired and that was when we tended to smash em. We still tend to do better at the back half of the game even this season but these slow starts have killed us twice now.

Ross Lyon goes into some detail discussing Richmond. In summary he is not too concerned by what he sees, and suggests Collingwood and Hawthorn are two of not very many teams equipped to upset us with their ball use.

Yep, a decent bit of perspective there from someone who was recently a coach.

Yes, teams are trying to nullify what we do, not surprising, but the real question is whether that will work when we are in form. As Lyon said, if you are 1% off it makes a huge difference and we certainly are 1% off, if not more.

I don't buy the "Blueprint" concept.

1. We are slow (maybe we're building for later in the season)
2. Our skills are terrible (this will get better over coming weeks)
3. Our pressure hasn't been up to par (I hope it's a case of building fitness and intensity, not a Premiership hangover. We'll need to show something this week)

I dont think we have fumbled or missed targets this much in the last 3 years.

and to add to that - if we fix the skills and fumbles we are right in it. Hopefully it is just conditioning and lack of football.

for me it's both. We are off, but teams know what we are trying to do and have a strategy to counter it. Last year you could see this as well but most teams couldn't sustain their "blueprint" once we started to run over the top.

Did not see guys charging the ball carrier,or anyone bar our defence get a decent amount of ball, keys like Edwards, jack,Prestia need a lot of games to play their best,we will see our team really improve by rounds 5-7,I'm keeping the faith ,been there before and just remember the team has been set to not be at our best too early.

@TOT70, just about the post of the year. agree with it all. But that doesn't mean we can't adjust of course. My only concern is that we drop too many games while we do this, which puts us out of top 4 contentiuon due to the shorter season. We had to win 9 consecutive games last year just to make top 4. Pretty big game this week.

other teams went to school on us in the summer of 2018-19.

couldn’t get near us in the end.

at our best, they have no answer. 5 min quarters or 55 min quarters, doesn’t matter.

we have shown gears and the ability to change them at will.

so what it comes down to now is timing. when do we launch?

we kinda need a result against the saints. the short season won’t allow for much error.

but all this talk of an enemy blueprint will fade once we get rolling.

1. The 2019 Grand Final gives us a really good insight into what is happening at present. What happened during the missing last four minutes of each quarter In that game?

In the first quarter, we kicked both of our goals during this period. In the second, it was 2 out of 5. In the third it was another 2 and in the last quarter we kicked a whopping four goals late.

That is roughly half our score kicked during the last 20% of each quarter when the opposition have been worn down.

We have feasted on fatigue for three years. Now they just jump us us early and hang on for a few minutes until the break. Meanwhile, we are just getting started when it all ends.

2. When the opposition defenders mark the ball and don’t play on, they can’t be tackled. That is why tackles are down. Playing on invites tackles. Blame Buckley for this one.

3. Our back men like to stay together. Our whole defensive system is about having a 4 on 3 contest, or a 3 on 2. We don’t cope with one on ones anywhere near as well. Clarkson exploited this successfully.

4. This is the big one for me. For years, teams have been trying to lock the ball in their forward line. They do this by moving their defenders forward and building a defensive wall between centre and half forward. This leaves half the ground available for mayhem when we turn it over and Rioli, Castagna and co get on their bikes.

Both Collingwood and Hawthorn left their intercept defenders deep. They weren‘t able to lock the ball in as easily but they were able to blunt us on turnover.

Some adjustment is needed.

Nailed it mate.

Good post.

No doubt the shorter quarters are working against us to an extent, but I don't believe it's the whole story. Last year we blasted Brisbane (MCG), Collingwood, GWS, Port, Carlton early and essentially maintained the break for the rest of the game. Carlton in Round 1 this year, also.

Conditions are what they are and Hardwick is on record as saying he embraces the challenges, which is sensible. If it's as simple as finding stride earlier in the match, then work on it. If we're not capable then so be it, but I think it's a little bit of a cop-out. We aren't just grinders, we're dynamic enough to adjust.

No dramas that this poor form is happening now - we have plenty of time to build form and learn from our losses. Rather it happens now that at the end of the season like 2018.

We will build like 2017 and 2019 and prove all those doubters, skeptics and media drongos wrong again.

It all starts in the centre. We have been soundly beaten in there against the Pies & Hawks early & found ourselves playing catch up footy 10 minutes into the game.
