The 2022 Engine Room

For the next few weeks:

Throw Big Shorts Baker into a proper full time role on the ball - not this part forward/part back stuff/part on-ball stuff. Give him a full run in the engine room for a couple of weeks.

Until we get Meatball (and Lambo) back, Chimp back to a heavier on-ball workload and not as much time up forward as he spent on Thursday. Ditto Dusty Dog.

Hopefully the break is good for Fridge and he is better for the run, and provides more output.

Shed looks lost at centre bounces. More time for Bolton there. Shed out of the centre.......Bolton in.

RCD on the ball and back into the side as an inclusion for Meatball. (Note: time is NOW RCD).

Ross more time on the ball if for nothing else but to get a defined assessment of his on-ball abilities.
I am not sold on Bakers impact as a mid. I think it’s one area he struggles in. Up forward or down back for me.

More realistically, McIntosh comes back in on to the wing, Ross moves into Prestia’s spot and RCD stays where is in the VFL.

Parfitt was taken by Geelong with the pick we gave them for JCaddy if memory serves me correct

Yes you are right, though Cadds was such a big impact in our premierships in 2017 and 2019 I'd still take Cadds regardless of what Parfitt has turned into.

Engine room is going to be our Achilles Heel all year. Unless we unearth a Tiger VFL midfielder (Sonsie maybe)

Why couldn't our Football Department see the midfield problem we had last year and do some list management to rectify it.

We all here could see it. A couple of injuries to our 1st tier midfielders and our lack of depth is there for all to see.

I know we won premierships with an average sometimes losing midfield which was balanced by our extra man in a rebounding backline. Now with the 6 - 6 - 6 rule we can't rely on that. We need a tier 1 stable midfield and near tier 1 but actually a tier 2 midfield. It appears to be the only way to win AFL games and hence premierships in this new rules modern game.......

This post might be better in this thread.

We are critical of our drafting but we need to look at who was worthy of being taken ahead of who we chose.

Looking at the RCD draft no one of note stands out. You could only really mount an argument for O’Halloran and Berry.

Same with Dow. The only one of note after him who might have helped our midfield right now is Devon Robertson but the jury is still out for him as well.

I think the lack of games due to Covid has been a massive factor plus the fact they couldn’t break into such a strong midfield.
Now is the time to see what they have got. We need to get games into them and see what they can actually do.

Spot on. People been critical of our recruiting but we haven’t had the early picks.

Caddy's helped us win two flags, how many flags has Partfit helped the Moggies win during that period?
Parfitt just coming into his prime 23 or 24 I loved what Cadds gave us but is on the outer now and Parfitt right now would be a HUGE yes over Josh.

Right now, absolutely, but would we have won the flags in 2017 and 2019 without him. I'm not sure we would have.

While I’m happy with the win today, Cotchins 8 tackles and rabid desperation at every contest has me concerned that we need to draft mids with the same hunger to eventually replace him.

We might have one of them, MoJo played well in the midfield today, he loves to tackle. Got a fair bit of the ball, some clearances and tackled like his dad.

Best game I've seen him play.

wouldn’t that be a treat. He certainly showed a lot playing for st Mary’s. I’d like to see him succeed. He seems like a very genuine young man

RCD - 8 tackles, countless hands in blocking Southport outlets, hip and shoulder bumps forcing turnovers. Pretty much played that game in the 2's. MRJ was also good.

As of end of R2 we have two young mids to watch - Sonsie and MRJ. Two more than we expected at the end of 21. And Ross can get a kick.

Meanwhile we have Cotchin back on heavy duties, Dion due back in a month and Dustin in the wings.

Shai is not doing any heavy work so far and nor should he. It's by no means dismal.

Jack, after yesterday I think you should add Tommy Dow to that list. He was hugely impressive in tight and was more Shedda than Shedda. Not much of it but influential and silky with his touches.

Completely true and I'm amazed that many don't get it

Spot on, The Mole. Absolutely. He looked real good at times. I liked his improved aggression with the ball. And he did get it in tight. He was a bright light.
