MATCH REPORT

A 43 point away win against the Lions in round 5 was good for the belief for the Tiger faithful for a good chance of a win for the home fixture against them in round 16. A win would be 2 in a row for Richmond in what has been a frustrating year.
The game started well for Richmond as Vickery kicked 2 quick goals in succession within the first 3 minutes of play. The Lions plugged away and were able to kick 3 first qtr goals, 2 coming from their ‘mosquito fleet’ in Josh Greene and Lewis Taylor. The first qtr ended with Richmond up 32-21.
The 2nd qtr wasn’t the best footy to watch with only 3 goals scored in it. Vickery kicked his 3rd and Batchelor showed some good running out of defence to goal from a Cotchin handball – I want to see more of this from the single man! Tiges up 45-29.
Vickery kicked his 4th goal in the 3rd quarter in what was a good game from him, helping to ease Jack’s workload up forward. Richmond kicked 3 goals to Brisbane’s 2 which kept both sides in the game. Tiges up 64-46.
Only 3 goals were scored in the last qtr with Shane Edwards sealing the game with a wide angled shot in the 19th minute. Tiges win 79-54.
The Tigers had plenty of the ball in what was a scrappy match at times with 8 players having 24 or more possesions. Ellis, Martin and Cotchin were prolific – Ellis especially is in some good form and is getting plenty of it. Miles had another solid game showing his contested ball skills throughout.
Rance was outstanding in defence, having kept Merrett to 1 possession in almost a half of footy.
Darcy Gardiner was excellent for the Lions, he had a career high 22 possessions and repelled many of Richmond’s F50 entries. Good signs for the young lion. The Lions ‘Mosquito Fleet’ of ZOrko, Greene and Taylor kicked 4 out of the Lions 7 goals, again showing that their quickness can hurt the opposition.
The win put Richmond up to 12th on the ladder, being 4 games out of the top 8.
I gave the following votes :
3 – Ellis. Was everywhere.
2 – Cotchin. Has taken the last couple of games by the scruff of the neck and is showing some good leadership out there. Amazing how good he can be with adequate support ala Miles.
1 – Shane Edwards – took the game on at almost every opportunity and hurt the opposition on the scoreboard with 2 good goals.
Happy with the win but IMO it wasn’t a spectacular match. The Lions have been down more than up but they are showing some glimpses of potential here and there.
The next match against Port Adelaide will be an interesting one with Port losing 3 out of their last 4 games. Richmond have been tipped by many to be the team to cause an upset this round.
Go Tiges!

Cheers to Skillz for another report this week.
The Tigers first back to back victory for 2014 saw them comfortably when a scrappy match against the Lions. Rance again showed why he was so missed earlier this year and has quickly solidified his place in the top 5 of these polls, even though he has missed 5 games. His leadership, spoiling ability and run from the backline are a crucial part of our game and he nullified his opponent in the process. Titch Edwards had a great week as well, managing to find the pill, one of the weaknesses in his game. His disposal out of the packs was as imaginative as ever and he really showed what sort of role he can play, if he can get his hands on it. Finally, Ellis continues to play the outside role that Grigg had been playing before injury. He is finding a ton of the ball and generally using it to advantage.
This week we play the apparently vulnerable Port Power. It looms as a very interesting match under the roof at Etihad. I'll be there for my first match in over a month, so I hope the boys show up and make a contest of it!
Carn' the Tiges!
