MATCH REPORT
by tommystigers
The last time I sat at the ‘G in daylight there was a gaping hole where the Great Southern Stand now towers above the field of play. It was an eerie sight, and lessened the spectacle of an Australia v England Boxing Day test match.
Bruce Reid ripped through the Poms, but the game-day experience had me feeling hollow and empty.
The Tiger sitting in front of me is still riding the rollercoaster hard. Spittle and adjective are flying. To his credit, he keeps it inoffensive. But I know him, the Tiger Army know him. He is we, and we are he. We have all been aboard that rollercoaster. And it hurts like hell. Until the numb that is. This guy hasn’t yet been spared the anguish, the pain. I admire him. Ball!!! I yell, but I expect no win today. I sound like him, but I am a sad impostor. The bright dawn I basked in this past February has been replaced by a freezing Melbourne winter grey. The sun comes out for a few minutes to tease and taunt. There are some glimpses of summer past until the the miserable blanket of reality snuffs out the light once more.
Many have not shown up for the ride today. We are hollow and empty. And so is our ‘G.
Someone needs to pull the trigger and put the poor beast that is Richmond 2014 out of its misery. We are dying by degrees. Someone needs to have the courage to make the change.
The Game
We kick one goal in the first quarter. The object of the game is to kick goals. We have the ball in our half for a large majority of the time but we don’t hit the scoreboard. We are happy to kick at goal from anywhere but dead in front. The deeper the pocket, the more concerted the lead. I think that this a major oversight by Damien Hardwick and his coaching staff.
Anthony Miles in his second game is Tigerish. He wants to be out there, wants to play. He is worthy of the jumper. His possessions of the pill in the first quarter outnumber those of Reiwoldt, Maric, Hampson, S. Edwards, and Houli combined, with a couple for spare change. The rookie is doing his part. He is still a bit raw but I will take that over the experience and lack of results from those more experienced.
Kicking four goals straight in the second quarter we hit the lead. But this is same old, same old Richmond. We can’t maintain the pressure.
Fundamental skill errors are costly to this team. The indirect tactics we employ and the knowledge of our weaknesses by opposition coaches and players make us particularly vulnerable to turnovers. There is no excuse for a professional footballer in dropping a sitter, handballing to a player under greater pressure than your-self, allowing your opponent too much space, or kicking the football straight down the throat of the opposition. We do all of this consistently at varying stages of importance in the game and it bites us hard. It always does.
Seven goals straight by Freo from the end of the second and into the third and the game is blown. The Free- Yo chant goes up. I can hear it clearly from the Punt Road end. The Tiger in front is riding white knuckled, having a conniption at the inconsistency of umpiring and the lack of heart by the Richmond players. He is as old as I am, he was there in the heyday. I empathise.
Fyfe and Ballantyne are killing us. Fyfe won’t be coming to Tigerland. I wish Ballantyne was eaten by a tiger. I wonder who would win a popularity contest between he and Milne. I wish a tiger would eat Stephen Milne too.
At three quarter time I sit there and look out at all the empty seats. Some of the faithful are not so. They pack up and leave. Whatever coping method they utilise it aint working anymore. They will ring their station later on and vent for a while, or cry. That helps sometimes.
The fourth, and Ellis is trying to make amends for earlier indiscretions and is everywhere, but it is all too late. If Freo don’t score in the last Richmond still lose. Our five goals make us look better than we are. At times Freo were coasting and when challenged clicked up a gear. We are equal last.
Miles was my best in the Yellow & Black, followed by Rance and Axel Foley.
We halved the winning quarters and ended up with a 20 point loss. We win most of the stats and lose. Explain that Damien! If you didn’t know any different , you might say it was a decent effort. Noble. The underdog on the ropes, losing on points.
No, we lost because we dare not to win. These are not the Tigers of Old. They fear loss, and the stink of it is in their nostrils. They play the pockets, the flanks; all day every day. Their boots are covered in chalk dust from the boundary markings. They kick backwards, sideways. They play defensively. But in those sweet, sunlit moments when they roll the dice and play with courage, with verve, they look supreme, irresistible. In 2014 these glimpses have been few and far between. And so our winter has been a bleak one indeed.
I stepped off the plane and was greeted by sunny skies and Gold Coast warmth. Home. It will take me a week to thaw out.
I will be tuned in on Friday Night. Richmond is who I am. I wonder if the Tiger will be there?

Thanks tt for that great report. Sorry that the team wasn't able to put together a professional effort after your journey south. You can stay nice and warm while the Tigers play the hottest team in the league on Friday night.
Personally, I missed my first Tiger home game in a long time last weekend. They say that your body starts to let you know it's aging at 40 and a episodic, chronic injury flared up and left me unable to attend. The sad thing was, after watching the game on Foxtel, I was happy that I hadn't made the journey. The ~3 hour round trip to attend the games is something of a ritual, but the Tigers' performances this year have me questioning my commitment. I am going to miss the Sydney match tomorrow as well, but I'll be hollering at the TV, especially if the Tigers' form continues in its present vein. The sad thing I find is that we haven't had a surprise result (in a good way) this season. In past seasons, even when things were dark, we would snag a victory against Freo, or the Hawks, or, dare I say it, Sydney. However, the only surprises this year have been the losses. The Suns, the Bulldogs and the Dees stung the most. What I wouldn't give for a shock result, just to boost the morale.
Anyway, enough of the depressing talk. The game itself DID have some highlights, most notably, the transition of Miles to senior footy, showing that his leather poisoning at VFL level will translate to AFL level. He has areas to work on, but it has been an exciting debut for a player in a team crying out for inside midfielders. The PRE faithful recognised his achievement and awarded him best Tiger afield. Alex Rance just pipped Axel Foley for second place this week after Freo allowed him to rack up possessions at will. He was solid in defence and provided the majority of our run from the backline, linking in with Houli and Petterd. Foley has continued to show stepwise improvements and Saturday's game was his best in a long while. It would be nice to see him take another step and provide that much need run in the midfield, however the graph is trending in the right direction.
Now we take on Sydney. Flag favourites and playing an exciting brand of footy with Buddy finaling settling in and looking as dominant as he ever did at the poos and wees. It will take a special effort to topple the Swans in their current form and I don't have high hopes, but I'll be cheering us on from the comfort of my lounge!
Carn' the Tiges!
