Talking Politics

Yeah you know there's a small army of News Ltd reporters that are waiting for Labor to announce their policies and candidates so they can denigrate them relentlessly to provide relief for Scott, while simultaneously telling us that Labor "just isn't cutting through"...

Albo doesn't really make headlines. Part of that reason is that to major media outlets have a vested interest in keeping the Libs in Government so Albo doesn't get the media attention previous leaders did. Combine that with his passive, nice guy friendly persona and they just ignore him.

If only Penny Wong wanted to be PM.

I agree the media tend to ignore Albo, but it is his job to get noticed and his complete inability to deliver a line is less than unhelpful.

Not sure what the issue is on the French submarine cancellation

When the U.S offers to support Australia with superior technology, especially when we live next door to an emerging superpower, the logical reasonable thing to do is to take up their offer.

Could have been handled better, but we were made an offer we could not refuse.

Australia and the world is safer as a result

France will get over it because they have to, thats politics.
how and when will Australia and the world be safer?
how is the deal with the US and UK better than the French deal? (Genuine question, I don't know the details of either contract)

it'll take longer to get these new US or UK subs operational (it still hasn't been decided who will build the subs or where they'll be built), so i hope our rusty old fleet will keep the world safe in the meantime.

The following quote from an article in The Diplomat seems to sum it up:

The prospective AUKUS SSNs therefore come without “any estimated cost (except they’ll be more expensive than the French ones), precise timetable (except they won’t be available for a couple of decades), or firm indication of how much building will be done in Australia (except that it won’t be all of it and possibly only a modest amount).”

Maybe just going with the French Nuclear sub in the first place would have been the better deal

Not true. Morrison still pulled off the most remarkable election win in Australian politics. The polls had him a mile down two days before.

Labor were raging favorites. Morrison out campagained Labor, he won that election.

Australians won't go for a full negative campaign. The "we can't be worse" theory won't work for you. You have to show why you will be better.
Nobody really knew much about Scotty when he won, but a lot of weird stuff was going on around their campaign.
Clive Palmer for one. The lies about Labor introducing Death Taxes. Gladys Lius confusing signage in a very tight electorate. etc etc ...

Rumours of Dutton et al organising a #libspill to dump Scotty. Just a twitter rumour at this stage.
Can't see it just yet. It won't happen unless News Ltd agree, and then we'll see a few days of positive press about the likely new leader and more press about ScoMo's failings.

There isn't even a plan on how and when they will be built, what Australia needs to support nuclear powered subs and many other details and that assessment and report is going to take 18 months.
The other thing is we have no idea what it is all going to cost

Apart from that there isn't much wrong with it ......

makes me wonder what is actually going on with this deal ...

as Foreign Minister Payne heads off on a please explain mission to S/E Asia ...

Abbott, Morrison and then Dutton? How far this country has fallen if that is all we can produce

Get ready for Tim Smith PM

“Senior Victorian Liberals have confirmed that Mr Frydenberg is leading a group of federal Coalition MPs, including Michael Sukkar, Greg Hunt and Alan Tudge, backing Mr Smith in defiance of … Matthew Guy’s insistence he has no future in state politics.”

Why not couldn't be much worse than the incumbent.

The more the ALP sits on their hands doing nothing the closer they get to Government

yep, this.

we are currently enduring the most anti-intellectual period in our political history. Labor fully realizes that saying nothing at all of substance until a few weeks before the election is the safest route.

meanwhile, the coalition will eventually find that no amount of self-serving corruption or double-speak can save them from the people.

the problem for our current government is that Australia is still a robust democracy (despite the lamentable state of our media) and the AEC remains inviolate.

I don't think Scomo is the option for next PM and doesn't deserve a second term at all but Albo has done nothing to install confidence either.

Clearly letting the Libs hang themselves but sooner or later he has to do, or say something.

You can't Stephen Bradbury it into the top job, that won't work.

ScuMo did.

Not true at all. Clive Palmer handed it to him with a massive $50m Media Campaign aimed to get him approval for a mine he wanted. He delivered & so did ScuMo.

I'm talking about how Morrison sneakily backdoored Turnbull. He had been whispering sweet nothings in Turnbull's ear saying I'm with you, we'll make a great team. All along his goal was to knife Turnbull and get the head job.
Pretty sure Fullofbull back doored Yabbott n Fullofbull was the *smile* imbecile that bought the froggy subs and then asked for them to be totally redesigned in the first place. Absolutely deserved a fearsome back dooring.
Standard of politicians n political parties in this country the last twenty years or more is bloody pathetic, the whole lot of em should be stacked in a corner n nuked.

Thinking back over the last week or so, do we have a Foreign Minister?
