Talking Politics

Now they are bragging that they have the lowest level of strikes ever. Well when you take away the democratic right to do that... it is going to happen. Those pricks make me sick.

Rudd looks like getting in,I for one didn't think he was much chop (Still not convinced) but obviously Beasley was on the nose.

Good on Rudd for his Broadband policy.

Howard has been on the run all week with his party's behaviour and now Rudd turns the focus back to policy.

Regardless of if Rudd keeps up his good work it is very healthy for this country to have a quality opposition.

Ruddy (aka "Little Johnny Version 2") is doing o.k.....more agreeing with the Government to add to the ones I mentioned in my post above:

I can't be bothered reading the articles or your quote of your own post Livers so don't really know what the above comment is referring to but I think it's a breath of fresh air to have a pollie who's game to agree with some ideas instead of the usual bagging of anything to do with the opposing party as is more the norm.

Same as people aligning with one party or another regardless of policies. There's good and bad on both sides.

Now if only Kev would promise to scrap the GST he'd be home and hosed.

Agreed.

What ever happened to the 'promise' of abolishing stamp duty when GST was implemented?

How do these guys constantly get away with breaking a promise that a businessman would be sued over when breaking such an agreement?

All the Labor State Governments decided to keep the GST and the Stamp Duty.
Costelloe has raised this many times.
Can't blame Howard for this one. But people do, which shows their lack of political knowledge.

Speaking of knowledge, I know that I heard Howard say, 'never, ever,' when asked if he would introduce a GST.

I remember that, what about you, Poppa?

Agree with the healthy opposition, bloody good thing.
$4Billion to broadband Australia! Good luck Ruddy, you're gunna need more than that to pay for the consultants

Yep that's what Howard said - "never ever"
Then he changed his mind.
Went to the people and said "at this election please vote for a GST. If not, then vote Labor."
People had the chance to democratically reject it.
History says the people spoke.
But there are still a small minority who refuse to listen.

Yeah, its great that broadband idea for the whole country.
Got no problem with that....

But how is he funding it?

The ALP have such a poor record of financial mismanagement.

It took Kennett to get us back as an "A" class state after years of poor accounting by the ALP.

Bracksy is only keeping things alive due to his "revenue raisers" on every bridge and behind every rubbish bin, catching poor bastards who take their eye off their speedo for 2 seconds. :-X

Actually Kennett condemned us to a "D" class state by closing all the schools.

Also... I don't get all this whinging about revenue raising with speed cameras. I couldn't think of a better way to raise revenue... I mean surely the abundance of "revenue raisers" is a deterrent for speeders to speed and therefore saves lives by slowing drivers down.

In the likely event of people breaking the law (one of your pet hates, puddles) by failing to adhere to the speed limit, there is a good chance that they will be caught AND the money from the fine they are slugged can be injected back into the state.

Sounds like a good thing to me.

Sorry mate...financially, Kennett and his Government got us back in business.....AAA-credit rating:

The Labor Party has governed Victoria for 17 of the last 24 years. This period of Labor dominance was broken for two terms by the election of the Kennett Coalition government in 1992 and 1996. At those elections the electorate exacted revenge on the Labor Party for the financial disasters that took place while John Cain and Joan Kirner served as Premier. The Kennett government restored the state's financial credibility, but as outlined in the election summary, Kennett acted as though his government was invincible in the 1999 election and suffered a crushing defeat.

But the financial disasters of the Cain and Kirner Labor governments, resulting in the collapse and sale of the State Bank, and one of the deepest recessions in the state's history, appeared to have turned around political fortunes. The Liberal Party under Jeff Kennett won smashing victories in 1992 and 1996

1. If you hit a schoolkid at 102 km/h.....and I hit a schoolkid at 100km/h....the result will be the same.
Slowing down, by such small margins will not make that much of a difference, at the end of the day....and hence why the tolerance of the speed-cameras is geared for revenue raising, ahead of road safety.

2. If I speed past a speed-camera at 150km/h......it takes my photo....and, of course, unawares, I keep going and run down 5 schoolkids, how has that camera cut any crashes? how many lives did that camera save? But, heck...the Government will get their money in 2 weeks time when the fine comes in a mail, so some consolation for the families of the schoolkids, I'm sure.

The best way to cut crashes, is to have a visible police car, THAT not only forces people to slow down immediately, but if anyone is going too fast, then that driver is stopped before going any further where he could cause damage.
THAT is road safety.

That's why speed cameras have signs announcing them 50 metres up the road isn't it? Well they do in NSW and ACT anyway.

The more cameras, the more fines and the more dickheads that think they can break the rules without penalty will get the picture that they can't.

Though Bracks can be critisized for many things maintaing the 'A' class status is not one of them. An ALP government finally maintains financial credibility but the Right still want to critisize their means. It is almost like the Right just can't accept a left government not falling over financially.

Hey guys - I get to have a vote tomorrow - what a great choice -

Either - a Labor Government that has made a mess of the state over the last 12 years or a factionalised opposition. No real difference their next choice

Either - a Labor Leader who is trying to distance himself from pervious leaders who mis-managed. He does have a touch of charisma or an unknown speedo wearing guy who is leading the conservatives because he belongs to the biggest faction (I read where the lesser factions have given him an ultimatum - win 4+ seats or lose your party leadership - hey guys what about winning the election? Give us a decent alternative) Leaning a little towards Iemma because of the charisma factor. Next choice needed though

Local issues - either - a current Labor member who is trotting out the same promises he trotted out 4 years ago - none achieved or a Nationals candidate who is saying he will achieve these promises unlike the Labor bloke (how are you going to do that from the opposition benches when your leader has already conceded defeat a week out from election day?)

So as per usual I as a Taxpaying constituent have little value in who I vote for - little hope of a real leader standing up and saying there is the goal we have for NSW there is where we want NSW to be - if you want that come vote for us.

I ask surely as a people we deserve better......RT

They both seem hopeless remote.I don't envy you having to make a decision.

The opposition in Victoria seems similarly inept.
