Sydney Stack

Syd problem is this . His kicks to handball ratio is completely wrong . He actually handballs way to often .His first few games he was prepared to run and carry and looked as though he would be a star . Now he gets cheap handball receives and gives offs . Also his defending and understanding of game plan is very questionable. Incident last night when Grimes push up out of the way so Grimes could chase down an opponent. Not good

Was putrid in the first half but pleasingly ran out the game & started to find touch as the game went on.
Syd's missed a lot of footy & needs match fitness & continuity. Also been flicked a lot so far this year between forward & defence.
I'd persevere for another week personally. Plenty were worse.

AFL.com had Stack in our best:rolleyes::rolleyes:

BEST
Richmond:
Vlastuin, Grimes, Short, Stack, Castagna
Hawthorn: Smith, O'Meara, Sicily, Wingard, McEvoy, Mitchell
It says a lot when the 5th bloke on the bests had 2 disposals to 3/4 time when the match was over.
We had 3 defenders play well, and a couple of running defenders in Stack and Houli who tried in the 2nd half. No mids and no forwards apart from George in the last.
Says it all

Got to stop trying to pick the ball up one hand as well , therefore lots of fumbling as we all witnessed last night

I don't think he's as unfit as others are saying. Got plenty of it and played 78% which is more than 8 other players. I'd stick with him for now as I think he'll only improve. I think some forget he's only just turned 20yo and only a couple months older than Ross.

With a night of next to no positives , I actually saw a glimmer with Syd , he’d basically played the worst 12 quarters of his career going into half time , after half time he backed himself and tried to create some dash , good sign from a 19 year old kid who was horribly out of form , I’d play him again next week off the back half

Agree - he’s shown last year that he’s good enough and if it takes a couple of extra weeks for him to regain his confidence and skills and poise then let’s do it

Wasn't a game for him to remember kindly but he was not the only one who wasn't switched on. The thing is he knows that there are others in the two's who are snapping at his heals so expect him to get his mojo back in short time

Agree some poor footy first half , sec half much more like the dashing and daring Stacky we know , rare positive in the end

Stack's first half had me wanting to throw things at the TV last week. I swear he was involved in about 5 Hawk goals.

That said his 2nd half was much better & I'm glad he was given a reprieve as without VFL it will take time to adjust to the pace.

Despite bursting onto the scene in his debut season, I think Syd needs to be cut a bit of slack.
He's still a developing 2nd year player who's had much to deal with & overcome. This has been a very unsettling time for those even with the best support networks & structures. If he lost his way a bit when away from the footy club then it's no real surprise.

One thing I do hope is that he gets a chance to settle in position as been flicked a fair bit between thee back & forward half this season.
I'm expecting him to play back again this week. Hope he does well.

He was directly involved in 5 hawthorn goals.
But the kid has the goods.

Yes, he was a disaster in the first half. But wasn't getting much help. Better signs in the second half, and it's good we give players a good run at it in the seniors.

I've always preferred him down back - he tackles, intercepts, fills the hole, great disposal, and can run into the midfield as a linkman.

ol Sydney is a unique situation in the modern day, kids with Syds background rarely get the chance, we’ve got to remember this is a 19 year old kid coming from sleeping on random couches with nothing in his wallet to having everyone patting him on the back and having real structures in his life for the first time, as well as a few bucks in the pocket, not many of us could trulyy understand what a whirlwind the first 18 months in the system has been for him, I’d liken it to riding ya Malvern star to work and having plain salada’s for smoko and then next week takin the Calais and havin a hamburger with the lot for smoko and some garlic prawns for lunch
