Steve Morris VFL Coach

Do you have much to do with Teague or the other asst. coaches? Any views on them?
Don't really have much to do with the coaches. Due to the Coterie I'm in, I'm lucky enough to get briefed by the coaches. I have been in 2 briefings by Teague. He's very personable and engaging. He focuses on the message and hones in and comes across as very strategic whilst understanding that it takes time for players to be able to execute what is needed. I can see why he was a head coach.

What's noticeable at training is who leads certain drills and how the key drill rotates between coaches. Teague ran it two weeks ago, Ziebell this week. I can recall Lambert running one of the key drills earlier this season.

Yze observes, provides feedback and interjects if he wants a change/change up.

Just glancing through Gold Coast’s vfl squad today, there were several names with plenty of senior experience.
What Steve Morris has been able to cobble together this year with very good results suggests to me he may be blessed with a certain quality - some coaches have it, some don’t.
Northey had it, Tim Watson didn’t , if you get my drift.
The players seem so clear and well versed on what is required of them, what their roles are, but they still play with flair and instinct and such great team spirit, considering how much the group has fluctuated all season.
I think the sky is the limit for Steve

This is why I rather have our kids in the VFL.

Yeah, one problem with that is they sent learning to play AFL level back at VFL.
You're also making the huge assumption that it's the one guy who is getting our kids to a productive level and that it has nothing to do with the fact VFL is significantly easier.
It's amazing how much ball younger guys seem to find and how their disposal out of a contest is somewhat better at the lower level.
You're not comparing apples with apples.

Is it too early to talk about a succession plan?

injuries haven't affected the VFLs performance. If anything they've been hit worse.

Morro seems to have the players motivated and invested.

Steve Morris has been getting steadily better as a coach and what he is achieving is very impressive.

The other area we have improved enormously in is recruiting for the VFL program. If you go back a few years that was the biggest issue, our kids would play VFL and get monstered by mature bodied VFL players and we didn't have quality around them. We now have many very good vfl listed players and a program that is seen as a potential pathway to get drafted.

Not sure who does the recruiting but whoever it is they deserve a lot of credit.

In 2016, when the season was shot, there was a noticeable mid-year shift in the way the VFL team played. They started winning games and just missed finals, but the next season the new game style was implemented across the program and the rest is history.

Is Morris overseeing any noticeable shift in the way the VFL team is playing now?

we were poor in the VFL for a two games in a row and Steve threw the toys out of the cot in a post match interview after the second
I totally get his frustration , there was no structure and effort and intensity seemed well down

but like the AFL the turn over of players was crazy , but in the process we might have picked up two gems
Davidson , with the flashy blonde hair he gets noticed and kicked goals gets you on the highlights reel
but he has taken some good marks , some real good attempts and some very eye catching ground work for a tall
reckon he'll be on an AFL list somewhere in 2025
Wilson - has had a bog a few weeks ago , the next game wasn't as prolific but did nice in and under work and backed it up again yesterday
I'd be cheering if we rookie him at the end of the season

With some of the others they've managed to get some good solid VFL players and make the side competitive

the last few weeks I've noticed something return , when a player kicks a goal , lots of players get around and him , and it is done with some great joy
I saw it live in a VFL game in 2018 , and the seniors were doing it at the time

with the side showing good struture , going about things with purpose and getting joy out of the success of teammates
Steve has to be doing a few things right

hopefully its contagious

Looks like a great communicator and motivator.

Injuries haven't been an excuse at VFL level.

My take would be Yes. Some of the training drills that @caesar and I see on a regular basis are put to work at VFL level. Our contest set-up is the same as is our movement forward. The slower pace/lower pressure allows both our AFL guys and our good VFL bodies execute this. Garner, Brindley, Willson, Davidson, Taz, etc being standouts and thet makes it more seamless for our AFL guys.

In the VFL there used to be this quick long cross field switch, which we did try in the AFL at times which we seem to have dropped at both levels. Theres definitely a greater focus on control and shorter kicks and tighter running channels in the VFL which we're also trying at AFL level (and getting picked off more at).

So yeah I see similar gameplans and the VFL trialing aspects.

Is putting Morris into the skills / development coaching department an upgrade?

He already is there as a Development Coach. Is at every AFL Training session and runs drills or parts of the ground in drills.

Morris has been super impressive this season. All the VFL soclal media suggests a very unified and happy footy team that are playing at the peak of, or above, their ability. Great signs. Thoroughly enjoying watching all the VFL games this year. Come finals, we could have a very handy team on the park.

That is impossible HKT because according to many we don’t have a game plan.
