In the NBA in 1988 two players were vying for the rebounding championship (most rebounds). One player needed 28 to win the title in the last game of the season and he got them. Who was this player and who did he beat to win the rebounding title?

Charles Oakley was one of the players, but not Karl Malone.
 
The question was actually wrong.  Michael Cage beat Charles Oakley in rebounds per game but Charles Oakley beat Karl Malone in total rebounds which is what the question sort of asked though the 28 required for the last game was misleading.
