What has happened in the period since Rd 1 2002. How can nearly every player fall away so badly?? In 2001, every player was prepared to run and create and take chances. This was highlighted by blokes like Tivendale and Bowden being sensational using their pace and foot skills. Now they look scared to leave their man in case they stuff up or get caught on the rebound.
Now, this mindset has to be coming from somewhere, and me thinks that this may be from the coaches box.
IMO, you're absolutely right, RR.
Can Danny coach? I don't know if we'll get to find out the real answer, but go back to 2000. We almost made the finals, in Danny's first season, but a long list of injuries finally killed our chances and remember that we were around the top four for quite a while, even with the injuries. That was followed by a top four finish and finals appearance in 2001. Our style of play that season was ugly, at best, but effective in getting us to the finals.
2002 was the horror of all seasons. Everything that could go wrong probably did. All of a sudden the Club is under pressure from everyone. IMHO, Danny is now coaching like a man under pressure. This could explain some of your queries RR.
None of our players get out of their comfort zone at this footy Club. You know why? Because they don't need to. If they don't produce the Coach will get the flick. But because no coach with any real credentials would want or need to coach us, we will only ever get a coach with little or no experience. When they are eventually put under pressure, due to losses, they get the flick. The players are off the hook and we start all over again. No other department gets looked at, it's always the coach. Has anyone stopped to think that it's not all the coach's fault, given that we've had many coaches and no success for a very long time?
Danny's defensive style kills any initiative the players may have and he might want to address our negative game style, but with the added pressure of recent times, the type of football produced by our players more than reflects the coach's 'mood'.
If Danny can stop coaching like he's under pressure and his job is on the line and start coaching like he's solely interested in getting the best out of the players then he's got a hell of a lot more chance of retaining his job. You can't help anyone who won't help themselves.
I agree it's up to the Club and Danny to handle the pressure and instead of this endless line of scapegoats, we could actually support people to get better at what they do.
I understand the need to make hard decisions, but there's a difference between making a decision just for the sake of being seen to be doing something and making a decision that seems obvious to some. We've been using the former approach for a long time now and where has it got us? Exactly where we are now - ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE!
We're paying for our sins of the past and if we keep giving someone the flick, just to ease the pressure, then we'll all be posting the same negative stuff in five years time.
