Round 9: Team changes against the poos & wees

Have you seen the last 2 games? We are moving the ball much better and we see that with the numbers of marks inside 50 we have taken and the higher scores.

Short moving to the midfield has been a masterstroke, a change resistant MC would not have made that move.

There is nothing wrong with our defensive game, but we did need to change our offensive game somewhat and thats to make our ball movement cleaner which we have been. Less of the scrubbed kicks forward and more direct kicking to our forwards.

We have wanted to do this all season and create more seperation in our F50, hence why w wanted to play 3 talls. It doesn't work with the 2 rucks, so the balance has moved to having Dusty as that "3rd tall". Getting Short and Bolton (and MRJ too) putting that ball inside 50 has been great for our scoring opportunities.
(I kept putting Short in the midfield in my suggested teams and am glad it finally happened).

As to the rest of it you and TF are entitled to your opinions as I am to disagree.
We are still deliberately scragging a lot of inside 50’s as part of our ongoing chaos.
approach
With Dusty Shai and Tom plus Jack Inside I would prefer to see us kicking to advantage instead of just banging it in.
Players whose kicking and/or hand balling is weak, think for example our 5 and 11, can’t manage any other way.
Prefer games be given to better users in Stack, Sonsie and CD.

Again refer to the last 2 games.

We are well above the AFL average for marks inside 50 and scores inside 50, which is totally down to the way we have moved the ball. Sure we took advantage of the Pies defenders, but I reckon we knew how they would defend. Both Howe and Moore like to sag off their opponent and use their closing speed to spoil the ball, but if they get their late or the kick is very good, then they are left to look silly which is what happened on Saturday particularly in the 1st half.

We have often scragged the ball forward in the past but there has been a change over the last few weeks for sure.

With players returning, doing a team is getting hard. Good players are going to miss games & that's a very good thing.
I could even see someone like Baker missing out.

Interesting.
After 8 rounds I reckon there are 19 who deserve to be selected when available.
That group is Broad, Balta, Cotchin, Dusty, Grimes, Gibcus, Rioli D, Vlastuin, Baker, McIntosh, Bolton, Pickett, Short, Lambert, Lynch, Riewoldt, Nankervis, Prestia and Soldo.

Graham, Ralphsmith and Rioli M are closing in, but there is still plenty of opportunity left.

Given how undermanned hawks are in the ruck time to give Nank a rest?
I think this opens up our second ruck option - drop Soldo and Mansell, in Prestia and Vlaustin.

Pickett rucks, because he can and is better at it than Grigg . And his follow up work will be …enormous

No. I never want to see us be forced to play Pickett in the ruck again.

PLAYERINJURYESTIMATED RETURN
Riley Collier-Dawkins Illness Test
Rhyan Mansell Suspension Round 10
Matt Parker Ankle Test
Dion Prestia Illness Test
Hugo Ralphsmith Ribs Test
Samson Ryan Achilles Test
Nick Vlastuin Illness Test
Updated: May 9, 2022

Early prognosis

Ill trio Collier-Dawkins, Prestia and Vlastuin look likely to be available for selection for this weekend's clash with Hawthorn, while Ralphsmith is also closing in on a return after three weeks on the sidelines. Ryan and Parker are listed as "questionable" by the Tigers, the latter kicking two in the VFL before tweaking his ankle. – Sarah Black

Yes. Tom took 11 marks, a brilliant effort, which is a testament to precise delivery.
Also, Trent's performance was superb.
One of the greatest players in our history.
He must play to 300 games at least, Dustin to 350.

Great to have selection dilemmas instead of scarcity.
No one deserves to be omitted.
In: Prestia, Vlaustin.
Out: Mansell, Gibcus.
Gibcus has a rotation policy anyway.
The team is settled.
Difficult nigh impossible for Ross, Dow, RCD, Miller and Tarrant to return, only exception is injury.

Soldo could do with some solid game time in the twos - he's got some serious rust and needs more than just the buff that half a game delivers. But I generally prefer running with two rucks (in form). The advantages are there to be seen.

Sonsie coming in against the Hawks - he's in form and would certainly be motivated!

And it's Mansell or Baker in the backline for me. Bakes just ahead at the moment.

Castagna has an aerial game for his size that only Bolton betters. But it's up the ground mainly these days and not serving us well as he then has the role of delivering into the forwards. He's a long term out for me.

Gibcus rotation policy???
As Pauline Hanson would say “please explain”

The team is more or less settled now.
We were 5-4 in 2017.
We are not too far away from the bye, when the eight tends to settle.
In terms of personnel, Ross, RCD, Dow, Miller, Taz are merely emergencies.
The departure of Astbury and Houli depleted our defence more than we had estimated.
Balta and Baker must play in defence.

Match committee stated that Gibcus is occasionally rested from the seniors, in order to develop.
In a sense, it is the polar opposite of what Geelong does with Selwood, he is ageing, not developing.
A fresh Gibcus could have a profound impact in the finals.
My own concern this year is the three Melbourne mids, Oliver, Trac and Langdon.
I do not know how they can be stopped.
I was a guest at the St Kilda game, they just dominate the midfield, almost 40 disposals each.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn’t seen that MC statement but it’s more than sensible. Gibcus is an absolute gem. He has been under the hammer from game 1 with key players out injured but has done amazingly well.

I guess with Tarrant also carrying some soreness selectors can rotate them depending on Opposition matchups etc. Come the business end of the season both will be a major part of our defence artillery.

Yes, Melbourne no doubt are flag favourites. They are the real deal. At our best we can more than match any other contenders.

It depends how regularly they expect him to play before having a rest.

He played Rounds 1-4, then missed 5 and has played 3 in a row now. Depends in this next run how many they expect him to play. You would expect having only played 4 initially, that he could miss 1 of the next 3. Potentially not Sydney (else that means 2 in a row with the bye the week after), so you could be right, they might play him, 4, then 3, then 2 before the bye (getting the experience of Dreamtime into him also).

You could be right that he might be rested this weekend.

Got to nominate a second ruck?
