Round 6: the herniated disc games.

Well, to modify a popular saying - 'Whatever they've got, we could sure use some.' Not sure how they can run so hard for so long; perhaps frequent rotations. But we once had Fly McCrae - and now we don't!

As impressive as their running is, I'm also highly impressed by how sharp their kicking disposal is. Their field kicking is super. They just hit so many under 40m passes every time.

Out of interest just counted the number of players for each side with 70%+ DE:

Anzac Eve: RFC = 7 Anzac Day: Skunks = 18.

I think that says a lot about the relative differences between them under Fly and us under Dimma, even if the running was comparable.

Thought I'd check the opponents that beat us - GoDeez in the Anzac game: they also had 18 players who went at 70% DE or higher. Essendrug had 15 players today.

It's painfully obvious where our deficiencies begin.

That’s an alarming statistic. Holy *smile*

Chaos is so yesterday

Remember when we applied manic pressure and were irresistible in running forward. Wasn't long ago.

We are a shadow of that. No urgency, no passion, no desire to run in waves. Our soul has jumped to Scumwood FFS

More true than you may intend. Under McCrae and Leppa, the Skunks bring high speed chaos but have taken it up quite a notch. They've added elite kicking and even their HBs hit targets much better than most teams. Whereas our disposal by both hand and foot has always been sloppy and nothing has changed. But we've just lost the running power and fitness to compensate any more.
Plus we hardly have anyone who can take contested marks to stem the tide - Balta, Jack, maybe Grimes and ... who? (with injuries e.g. Lynch/Nank).

It took some of them a few years to really learn from the success of our game-style, but now nearly every team has adopted our intense running, attacking game with forward HB and high pressure around the ball to win it back via turnovers, two-way running, chaos ball movement to catch defences out before they could get set.

From the games I've watched (but not every team yet), most teams apply this at least when they have the ball. Some like Cartoon and Freo (Longmire old Buckley student) go into ball control when struggling, behind and under pressure. But Skunks have taken our game and raised it a few notches with elite disposal and relying on a rebounding backline with Moore, Maynard, Murphy and N Daicos.

It means you don't even need great KPFs because they just move it so fast and hit up any free, moving target - best available. Then it's up to them to convert.

Watched some of the game.
Do not normally watch, but most of my family supports the Dons.
Quaynor destroyed the Dons in the final quarter.
He was the dedicated running link, between high on the wing and half-forward flank.
McRae kept him isolated and one-out.
The Dons opponent could not keep up.
The Dons should have placed a loose defender in the gap on the flank.

Yes, the Quaynor that the skunks rorted the academy thing to get! Davey was on him at times but was completely not up to it - the weak link exploited. Smart coaching, of course.
