Lots of decisions to make and a decent draft hand. The reduced list size makes things difficult.
One thing they must address is the shape of the team. We are clearly in need of at least 1 centre who can get a clearance, at the moment we can't buy a centre clearance. Plus, our backline is simply too short. All well and good to have smaller and quicker half backs who can run and rebound the ball, but they are of little use if taller forwards are marking over our defenders.
Ok, let's go.
Miller: if they ain't willing to play him then delist. FFS he is taking list space otherwise. I think they should play him this week to have a look but it worries me that he hasn't got a game recently given the injuries.
Naish: hasn't shown he is AFL level, delist.
Caddy: seems to be very marginal player now, trade.
Chol: has had plenty of chances, let him try somewhere else. He may yet make it but if he does I think it will be a change of club which pushes him over the line.
Mansell: clearly inexperienced, would give him another year.
Ross: this one is more difficult, has shown some good signs but that was a few years ago, I would tend to delist or trade.
Houli: a star but his body is letting him down. Contributes so much off field too. My preference would be to retain him as a VFL player and development coach. If he insists on staying as an AFL player it would have to be on a fairly low salary. Hope he has set himself up for life but I reckon his playing days are coming to an end and want to see him leave the team with an assured future and keep connection with the club.
Aarts: yeah, not going well, just not quite at the level - trade.
Castagna: geez this is difficult. Unless we can find a role for George he might be gone. Unusual player, skills not really up to scratch and game may have passed him by, but what he used to do is valuable. I would tend to trade but not a clear cut case.
Eggs: given lots of chances, delist.
RCD: very interrupted development with the mess that has been the VFL for the last 2 seasons. Keep, I reckon he is a chance to make it.
Parker: hmm, can he get better with an AFL level pre-season? Dunno. Bit of a toss of the coin for me, offers some nice hardness but has flaws.
Garthwaite: not up to AFL but we need tall defenders, would only keep if we can't do better.
Astbury: really depends on whether his injuries can be sorted. He is a clear upgrade on some of our options. Would give him another year if he pulls up ok.
I'm sure there are a few I have left out. Once all the above is sorted, hit the draft looking at some trade possibilities but the priority must be to get better centre clearance players and tall defenders. Skills have to get better too, but skills under AFL conditions can be difficult to assess.
