Trade: Castagna, Aarts, Caddy,
Outgoing FA: Chol

Incoming FA: Billings, Talia, Dunstan, Crouch

Like the idea of Talia if he can get his body right for next two years. Like thoughts about finding contested ball midfielders too.

I am going against the grain here. I want it keep Houli. I am against tipping out guys who set the culture of our club. There are others ahead of him in the queue.
He wants to go on, and I'd keep him, as much for what he offers off the ground, and culturally.
Stack, Rioli, and Mansell can learn a bit from him, both football and non-football.

Retire: Houli, Astbury
Delist: Egg, Naish, Parker (one of Garth or Miller, not both if Astubury retires, however both are *smile*)
Trade: Any or all of these players for ANY price: Ross, Castagna, Aarts, RCD, Caddy
Free agency: Chol (or delist, whichever gets him out of the club, i dont care)

I certainly wouldn't be against keeping Houli if we have space on our list, but can't see us keeping both he and Astbury and think Astbury fills more of a need for us right now

Lots of decisions to make and a decent draft hand. The reduced list size makes things difficult.

One thing they must address is the shape of the team. We are clearly in need of at least 1 centre who can get a clearance, at the moment we can't buy a centre clearance. Plus, our backline is simply too short. All well and good to have smaller and quicker half backs who can run and rebound the ball, but they are of little use if taller forwards are marking over our defenders.

Ok, let's go.

Miller: if they ain't willing to play him then delist. FFS he is taking list space otherwise. I think they should play him this week to have a look but it worries me that he hasn't got a game recently given the injuries.

Naish: hasn't shown he is AFL level, delist.

Caddy: seems to be very marginal player now, trade.

Chol: has had plenty of chances, let him try somewhere else. He may yet make it but if he does I think it will be a change of club which pushes him over the line.

Mansell: clearly inexperienced, would give him another year.

Ross: this one is more difficult, has shown some good signs but that was a few years ago, I would tend to delist or trade.

Houli: a star but his body is letting him down. Contributes so much off field too. My preference would be to retain him as a VFL player and development coach. If he insists on staying as an AFL player it would have to be on a fairly low salary. Hope he has set himself up for life but I reckon his playing days are coming to an end and want to see him leave the team with an assured future and keep connection with the club.

Aarts: yeah, not going well, just not quite at the level - trade.

Castagna: geez this is difficult. Unless we can find a role for George he might be gone. Unusual player, skills not really up to scratch and game may have passed him by, but what he used to do is valuable. I would tend to trade but not a clear cut case.

Eggs: given lots of chances, delist.

RCD: very interrupted development with the mess that has been the VFL for the last 2 seasons. Keep, I reckon he is a chance to make it.

Parker: hmm, can he get better with an AFL level pre-season? Dunno. Bit of a toss of the coin for me, offers some nice hardness but has flaws.

Garthwaite: not up to AFL but we need tall defenders, would only keep if we can't do better.

Astbury: really depends on whether his injuries can be sorted. He is a clear upgrade on some of our options. Would give him another year if he pulls up ok.

I'm sure there are a few I have left out. Once all the above is sorted, hit the draft looking at some trade possibilities but the priority must be to get better centre clearance players and tall defenders. Skills have to get better too, but skills under AFL conditions can be difficult to assess.

All fair calls - agree with those. Assume you’d want to keep CCJ?

Personally I’d pass on Parker - think we’d just waste another year there. Would rather try Cumberland in 2022.

Agree ridiculous re Miller this year. Has to be delisted on the basis of playing Garthwaite (who isn’t up to it) ahead of him.

Astbury is interesting. If his body is ok, keep him for one more year. Or do we take Talia as a delisted free agent for two years on the proviso he passes the medical (could be an Al Martello type recruit lol).

Sad re Ross but agree & personally I can’t see RCD or Mansell ever being more than journeyman footballers. Happy to be proven wrong, but just a feel.

Given contracts, we could end up being stuck with Aarts & Caddy. Sort of ok, but at some stage in 2022 we’ll end up playing them and be disappointed.

Miller was injured and then no vfl. You wouldn’t debut anyone under those circumstances particularly not a tall defender

edit

im not really sure why I am fanboying him, have only seen him in one streamed game but thought he had very good skilz

We need to replace a caddy if he goes. Actually even if he stays, we need to replace his type.
Someone with the mongrel that he brought.
S tuck before hand. Hard 100 percent and great to watch.
We need this.

Think Pickett might be heading back to WA
I think that's probably better for everybody. I think we need some youth, and he turns the ball over way too much. He's been awesome, but his age vs our list direction, we need to say bye. Help him get to Freo or West Coast I say.

Think the skipper will retire.
Astbury and Houli will go again
Naish and Egg are in the delist departure lounge
1 of Garth and Miller to join them unless we trade in a key defender in which case both will go
Look to trade out 1 or 2 of Caddy McIntosh Pickett Graham only if they are happy to leave

Astbury and Houli will go again

Houli has been a champ, well respected but he needs to hang up the boots, I personally don't think he will get another contract. 33 years old and body has let him down.

Would much prefer Stack, Rioli, Mansell and Short as small running backs.

I knew I missed a few, but, yes, I would definitely keep CCJ. We need talls and he looks ok now and has potential to be better.

I think the club will do something like this:

Delist: Houli (wants to continue to play), Eggmolesse-Smith, Chol, Naish, Garthwaite, Miller, Parker

Retire: Astbury

Trade table: Caddy
Chol, Garthwaite, Miller, probably Astbury. Leaves us with prospective talls Colina, Ryan, CJ, Nyuon, Soldo if he comes back ok. I have CJ as a lock, Ryan as a likely. Tall backline options is a big concern.

12 and 13 games in his last 2 seasons. Lots of soft tissue injuries too. Think Deledio. It isn"t going to get better. I don't think we can afford to carry older players. Cotchin, Edwards, Houli, do we keep them all on the list despite being a lot more injury prone for the sake of culture? You'd expect players are fully aware of the conundrum and wouldn't look at it as an attack on the culture.

Haven't seen a lot of Miller this year but wasn't too impressed in his progress in previous years. Just turning 22yo so similar age to CJ and Balta. Probably no harm in giving him 1 more year as Astbury looks done and Garthwaite is too short and too slow.
