Reece Conca - so long and thanks for all the fish

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

I have been thinking about Reece and how it changed our play.
He brought 2 specials to our side this year - launching into the centre square and also the running play rebound.
First up is the running play. lets compare it to an american football set piece, which in a way a half back turnover is. team mates behind the ball, opposition ahead. Set piece that is controllable so coachable.
There are 3 options - long pass down the line, swing wide for the switch (pass to wide receivers) looking for open space to run, or the through traffic / up the middle run.
Ideally you use all options so as to keep the bastards honest.
Concs was our short running back, he had the agility to work in congestion and go straight through. terrific.
Houli provides a lot of drive, but will only choose up the line or the switch. Never through traffic.
Flossy can run through but using strength not agility.

And then we look at the middle. This year centre square possession has been the holy grail of launch pads. most teams are trying to hit up a stationary target forward of the circle then the run past receive and delivery into untouched forward land.
Doggies go by hand, but we along with other teams prefer the traditional stab pass.
Its the shortest direct route, so tends to be the quickest.... its a magic thing.
And Concs was hitting that shot. Grab ball, dodge, pass into the square.
And all we have left now is a couple of mids if they work back behind the ball (martin, cotchin)
Maybe Shorty who can follow in concas steps but is young and slight. Rance can and does, because he is a champ. But we dont want him as the outlet (talk about overburdening).

Without this play sides can press harder to the wings and block the down the line ball.
We need to regain this play.

Shocked at people being shocked.

We held onto another player far too long till they have no value.

Should've taken the Freo second rounder.

He is what he is and always was.

Who is shocked?

Yes he is what he always was: good player who can't stay injury-free.

Was a big part of our winning streak opening to the season.

I'd class a broken bone as different to a soft tissue injury breakdown scoop, if that's what is. Sometimes you just have bad luck.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

It's a shame Conca has a long term injury. He was playing well early in the season and having a significant impact on how we were playing. His body just hasn't given him a decent run at it.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

It is bad luck for Conc but it's also bad list management he's still on our list.

Was on the scrap heap but we signed up an injury prone player for TWO more seasons only see him fall to injury again. Assuming he's out for all of the rest of this season Reece will saddle up again in 2018 which by then it'll be 5 seasons since he had his best year 2013).

He was winning the ball, td. A lot of loose ball and that's the gold.

And he was breaking the line. Winning ball. Breaking line. That gives him, and the team, the full array of options as you describe. He is programmed to use aggressively. Because he will have the time.

Shorty is an improver. Won't get there this year, I reckon. Three years away from Conca class anyway. Vlastuin may still level up but I doubt it. He would have to to get anywhere near what Conca was doing. And Houli is in decline and could rarely do the mop and charge that Conca was doing anyway.

Grimes was reset to break-line-use-forward last week. That was a big change. He used to mop years ago but after his injuries we just used him more in stopping roles. He had... 9(?) disposals say, early in the second quarter last week. He was being reprogrammed to attack. Somebody got off the chain and he resumed stopping but we were reminded what he can win the ball and use it forward.

This mopping is for a quick nimble player. Who can win loose ball. (Loose ball is the gold. Because it's loose for a nanosecond and then it becomes contested.) Rhys Shaw was very good at this. There are a few in the AFL now. Laird. Williams was doing it for GWS.

Anyway, we don't have a replacement ATM. In fact, we have a crisis of running backs. Our best mop, the one who can get loose ball and run away with it is Alex Rance.

Reece Conca is a regular race goer. (Not literally; he's a TAB man. ;D) He's got nothing else to do on the weekends. We cannot budget his being fit to play football.

What Conca demonstrated in 2017 was that we desperately need someone we can rely on in the mop position. And that it won't be him. Let's get busy. Trading starts (and sometimes finishes) during the byes.

BTW if miraculously Conca stays sound it's hardly a crisis to have another one as good.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

he showed enough for tigers to persist with him in 2018, would retain on our list, a classy player has a backman who can get 20 pocessions a game, its a real shame for him and the tigers.if we make finals its 4 rounds left plus the 2 week break, so can still be valuable this year.

You can never have enough back pockets :help

Really good summation Del and Jack.
There is one player in our team who has those abilities in spades but is not yet developed. He debuts this week. When I first saw highlights of Shai he reminded me of Andrew Macleod. IIRC shai had the most metres gained in the U18 carnival. A natural line breaker. Too early I know but food for thought.

Spot on, Moley. Leysy and I have said it before, his skill set is made for the role.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Shai is an interesting comparison. While Conca has elite agility, it's all done at top speed. Chaos. Like a human pinball.

Shai, however, bends the laws of physics. Time stands still for him. (At least at VFL level.)

Great obs, TBH.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

I see Adams from the Dogs is now also out for a sustained period of time with a Lisfranc foot injury and it made me think of Conca.
Along with the navicular, these foot injuries seem very tricky to fix.
Must be incredibly frustrating for Reece right now after so many problems with his hamstring.
I really feel for the lad.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Wow thats bad news for Adams Lisfranc fractures are highly potential career killers right up there with naviculars.

Saw off Ricky Pettards career did the Lisfranc.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Reece is a bloody good kid, who doesn't deserve the vitriol he gets on these forums. Just been horribly unlucky with his body. He must be very mentally tough to still perform ok with all these setbacks.

If he was to be compared to an Italian car, it should be Reece the FIAT. Fix It Again Tony.

Re: Reece "Alfa Romeo" Conca

Has gone from Indefinite to TBC on injury list so should see a weeks column soon?. Was walking laps at training last week. Will pop by training tomorrow to see
if he has progressed to any running.
