QF Game Day - Richmond vs Brisbane Lions

Brisbane playing like 2014 2015 Richmond. High defense, trying to force fwd stoppages. That game style is vulnerable to slingshot footy and very taxing on the players. It’s easy to keep territory but hard to kick goals from congested flanks and pockets.

Lingy doesn't half make stuff up. When the ump paid the 50 in the 4th when McInerney clearly was walking forward off his mark. You can hear the ump say to Caddy that he hadn't moved forward off his mark, which was incorrect.

Lingy says the 50 was there as the ump had said that Caddy had entered the protected area. Ummm no he didn't. It was the wrong call, he clearly took 3 steps forward, the mark was 5m or so inside their D50, he was tackled on the 50m line.

Theres a reason they have struggled to kick big scores against the best defences.

That was the worst decision of the night. He took no less than 3 steps forward, how the hell was that not play on? I've seen players called to play on for just thinking about playing on.

Horrendous. Didn’t make any sense at all yet of course the tuna couldn’t call it as it was.

Umpire clearly said "he never went forward of the mark". Which is correct, he wandered sideways off it, which is effectively the same. He played on.

If the umpire had said "I hadn't called play on", fair enough, but he still would've been at fault for being too slow to call it.

Thought we got brought unstuck by a few late whistles which caused us to play on unnecessarily, and a few strange "not 15" calls.

But overall very pleased. Don't think I yelled at the TV once.

And we're the best slingshot opportunists in the business, particularly by slicing the opposition with our quick handballs.

I'm sure he actually stepped forwards not sideways. It was so obvious that Caddy had no choice but to grab him. I'll have to have a look again but that's how I remembered it live and then after they showed a replay.

I think you're being too harsh because he's a second-year player. I've been guilty of the same with him, including the Petracca call, but he was pretty good last night, especially in the first half.
Noted. And he is still a kid, probably because he looks physically ready (as Petracca is) that I judge him too harshly.

Wasn't the "knock" on him as a junior that he didn't work hard enough or get enough of it? Can he (or does he need to) change that?

Correct. He went directly forward. At least 2 steps. As you say Caddy had to grab him.

Yep, that was the knock. And the risk, like Petracca was that he was a forward they hoped could become a mid. Bully was scathing of his 3km time-trials, Gyps went meh, that just shows how much improvement he has in him. We'll see.

Perfectly said.

I also loved how Jack R after the game when questioned about the onslaught by Brisbane in the 1st Q how he felt. Loved it when he said the group were calm. I am so rapt to hear that. The playing group withstood everything, continued to apply pressure. Some great moves on the night. Yep as mentioned by a few Dusty, carved them up. Fagan I felt was almost in tears of disbelief over stats vs outcome.

Agree. We've definitely come a long way with how to handle mental pressure in our games.

About as clearly as it gets. Caddy might have been in the protected zone, I don't think he was but might have been, given that, and he walked 3 metes over the mark, either play on or take the kick from the mark. But yeah, Ling said he didn't go fwd of the mark, then they showed the replay, and he stuck to his guns! amazing. He is a fake news merchant.

I said last week when I saw Fagan on 360 that he looked scared, and that was how he coached last night. I think it’s all happened a bit too fast, and he’s not yet ready for it. Both he, and the team, should be better for the experience in 2020, but they’ll get a tougher draw.

My recall was he did both ...three fwd one sideways...is that a foxtrot?

Deep inside the 3rd quarter now. What stands out (but the commentators for all the $'s they are paid can't comment on it) is how we defended inside 30m of our gaol. Was outstanding defence forcing the Lions to continually take shots from further out. We did the complete opposite down their end, dismantled their defence completely.
Greatwork Mr P. Love your analysis.
