Punt Road Redevelopment

Just read that the State Government has signed everything off and the $65,000,000 redevelopment is expected to start later this year.

We have also been granted some extra crown land as part of this build. Which is pleasing.

Said it before but it’s a pity the new rebuild wont accommodate say 25k, even 20k, and we’d play the the lower drawing games like the Ports and Suns and Giants there.

Would be pretty cool to have a packed house AFL game at PRO.

It's great that the ground is going to be the same dimensions as the MCG.
Could perhaps charge sides who are in Melbourne, not playing us to train on it.

Any update on this development? The plan was to start building this year according to the articles posted.

Yes, project was originally slated to start mid to late 2022, that ain't going to happen and there is little detail coming out from the club.

I just heard Benny Gale on SEN defending playing the AFLW final at PRO despite the lack of capacity and facilities. He also mentioned we are committed to building our new 76 Million facility, (just in June the costing was 65 Million), have we added a new wing to the building or something or did we just use the same consultants as Government's use for their infrastructure projects thus guaranteeing a cost blowout:rolleyes:.

Last I heard Federal and State Gov's have jointly granted $30 million towards the project. Only 46 million to go, no wonder it is delayed

apparently some tree hugging mob has lodged a heritage appeal

Nice of them to give us the 1933 flag, but it does make you wonder about their research capabilities and their claims.

I don't think the Jack Dyer Stand (strange name given it was built before he played) is particularly significant to be honest. It has always struck me as fairly generic. Also, are they willing to pay for the restoration and upkeep? As is often the case with heritage buildings, if you really want to demolish them you can just leave the building alone and nature will demolish it for you.

That is disappointing to hear, i'll keep my opinion of these Heritage crusaders to myself, my own place is heritage overlay

The thing that they don't get is heritage is only important to preserve IF you can preserve it. The RFC have already stated that if the redevelopment is not approved, then they simply cannot continue at Punt Road, particularly the womens programme, so there will not be football played at the oval any longer. We would find somewhere else, as clearly the Punt Road oval is not big enough to retain our womens games there as the anticipated growth in the game occurs over the coming years. We need an expanded stadium, we cannot rebuild to the south (as Punt Road is there), we cannot rebuild to the west (as Brunton Avenue is there) so we only have options to the East (and this is a smaller area) or to the North which is where the current Jack Dyer stand exists.

I think these do gooders think we will stay there, which we won't, so they are fighting a battle that they aren't equipped to fight. If the RFC move away from Punt Road, what then for the oval and the current ground? Will it be mothballed until it collapses from lack of investment, or will it be demolished and we lose the oval from the Yarra Park complex completely.

Yep, correct. If we move away from Punt Rd then the Jack Dyer stand as it is now known will be neglected and end up condemned and demolished for public safety reasons.

I don't think the bloodied wombat people realise this, I'm afraid the stand is going one way or another.

The location and our history there means an enormous amount. And the cost of relocation would also be a massive hit. Too much has been invested to just move away.
These arguments were bought up before the Melb City Council planning officers some time ago, and they failed.
Got to fight again.

Fair point - next argument: if we aren't allowed to demolish the old stand, we will not pay for upkeep (although free food for possums and the like we might be able to stretch to if they can erode the stand sufficiently quickly ;) ). Unless someone else pays for upkeep we will let it fall down.

That stand has been falling down for decades, why the sudden interest? It can no longer have fans sitting in it because it is unsafe. The thing is coming down, the only question is whether it is demolished or whether we let it fall over all by itself.

As I understand the clubs plan there is no way the club can proceed without taking the old stand down and replacing it with a new one. In other words no progress can be made without the removal of the JD stand.

It is not Captain Cooks cottage.
The authorities must surely understand that safety and efficiency considerations require that from time to time multi seated sporting accomodation requires radical improvement.

The Richmond stand has long since moved passed the point where it can efficiently provide comfortable seating for the numbers wishing to use it. The club has already garnered State and Federal financial support, offered in the public interest.

The club will fight any provisional ruling now made, on the grounds of efficiency and public safety and you would have to be pretty confident that these arguments will succeed.

I can't for the life of me remember what it was called before it was named "The Jack Dyer Stand". I'll bet if it was still it's previous name there would be no argument about it being demolished.

Was called the Dave Chessell Stand, I have no idea who that was, likely a cricketer as the ground was originally a cricket ground.

Just looking at the objections to pulling this down again, I note that the objectors claim this is one of the last intact Edwardian grand stands still around. Did they look at their own picture, here's one:

fred.jpg

Now, take a good look at the pic. The roof is different, the detail under the roofline is different, the stand has been expanded, the stand is no longer as open as it was back in the 1920s. Plus, the caption under this pic points to this being a final in 1927, sorry, but not possible, all finals in 1927 were played at the MCG.

The research the Bloodied Wombat lot do is woeful, their claims should be treated with contempt.

I don't disagree with Guy Rundle that our cities are being wrecked by not keeping significant buildings, but you can't keep all the old buildings. I have fond memories of massive crowds, well over 100,000 at the MCG in the 1970s, and the old Southern Stand was an icon. But it still had to go as it had become unfit for purpose.
