Last time we were the shortest team was 1954-55.

Jack Dyer's famous maxim holds that "a good big man will always beat a good little man". Thorold Merrett told me Dyer sent him away for being "too small"! With Dyer as captain-coach, Richmond was the tallest team in the league from 1942-47.

Poor old Mark Eustice and Sheep Lambert wore the #4 for a few years with no cigar, as did Andy Raines.

Matty Rogers came closest in 95 and 01

Collingwood 2010 is an anomaly as Malthouse phased out older players approaching finals - very unusual for a premiership team.

That's interesting - I just assumed we were much younger and surprised to see even the doggies were younger than us.

How young were the baby bombers or was that just media hype.

Given the teams that were younger than us - that tends to suggest it is pretty hard for young teams to go back to back and maintain that form over consecutive seasons.

Older teams tend to be more consistent from season to season and within seasons. Hopefully our leadership keeps us on track.

Pretty sure just media hype. The more dollars / professionalism, plus medical improvement has come into footy the longer players stay in the game. From vague memory there was an article that came out during all the baby bombers hype that the Geelong premiership side of 63 was around a year younger ave age.

Geelong's 1963 GF-winning team was aged 23.43, but the competition average was just 22.98 - i.e. quite a bit younger than Brisbane this year.

i reckon he was a bush player (James?) who was finally released from his other team. he then shot himself in the foot hunting in the off-season and never played again.

Yeah.
He posts on here. Must be about 120 years old

You're a bloody marvel L2R2R. Thought that it was about a year younger, hard to believe that they were a mature side by comparison to the average of the rest of the comp. They were a bunch of snot nosed bloody school kids compared to some of the Granny teams over the last twenty years.

Thanks. I thought it might have happened in the late 60's -early 70's, but not lately, especially with interstate finals not holding anywhere near that
Also back then other thanMCC fans got the lions share of tickets. From 75 to 90 if you wanted standing room you could get them readily in the week leading up to gf day....Carl v Coll excepted. That was my experience. I have no evidence but my impression was that there was 80000 seats 40000 standing from 67 which is when the western stand was built. The last change until great southern stand in 92.

Some anti-premiership trivia

WHO AM I?

I’m the longest serving player on the current list that hasn’t got a premiership medal.
Would have to be the Griffinator followed by Batch n the Concareter if we're talking about purely Richmond players not imports.

TigerMasochist you’re a knowledgeable chap!
Your research was good, and your answer is correct!

1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 & 4 v 5.

Has to be more to it than that.
That system was in use from 1994 to 1999.

I'm guessing it was that 1994 was one of the few seasons where more than half of the teams made the finals. 15 teams. Final 8.
The only other time this happened was in 1916 (4 teams, final 4) and 1917 (6 teams, final 4).

Had to look up that 1916 season as it was possible to win both the spoon and the flag.

And guess what?

Come on down, Fitzroy!!!!
