Players under 21.

The club want Butcher. We should end up with a choice of Morabito or Butcher and I believe the club will take the 197cm Key Position Forward.
Cant say I disagree with their line of thinking. Big power forwards dont grow on trees.

I admit I know nothing about the draft this year.

Have read that Butcher has an awkward/unusual/poor kicking style?

I really do not think there is a major flaw in his kicking technique.

I think he is a 197cm Key Position player who has a hard time kicking accurately at goal.

I haven't watched him all that much mind you and maybe someone like Phantom could be more of an expert opinion on this.

All I know is the club have a high opinion on him and think we need a big marking Key Position player.

If Scully and Trengove are gone, yep I agree with this at the moment.

Tigerbob knows my line of thinking.

If we had a chance at Trengove or scully, I'd take them no worries at all. If it was between Butcher though, and the next tier in quality of midfielder, I'd go the big fella to straighten us up. It'd move Riewoldt to either Full Forward or third tall (depending on where putty and vickery play).

We need more midfield quality, no doubt. But we need someone across half forward who can take a mark and provide a target to kick to. Riewoldt isn't good enough to be that target, neither is Pattison, Schulz or Hughes.

As for the under 21's last night..... I think if you take a couple of key players out of the hawks list, they will fall back to the pack very rapidly. They have more class at the top end than we do, hence the reason their u21s look OK.

noone has mentioned that our 3 best under 21s werent playing.
also strange that noone mentions our lack of interchange late in the game. something people are very quick to point out if we beat a team with some injuries.

The problem is that they aren't that good (except for Cotch).

Rosy's point is just how accomplished Hawk's young players were, and how much better their list is....

God I hope we do (and we actually have the opportunity). It's a truism in football that big fellas take longer to develope than running midfielders. It will take many years before we are in a position to challenge and we should draft accordingly. Certainly we should not fall into the Wallet trap of wanting to become competitive as quickly as possible at all costs. The one thing is certain the quality KPPs will be plundered by the new franchises, this could be our last chance for a very long time to get someone of that ilk.

I am watching the Saints v Roos game. Those 2 blokes in Kosi and Riewoldt are not getting any shorter as the game nears the end. They will be the difference. The Roos are relying on their resting ruckmen in the forward line to take a grab.

Staggered at the TB. Butcher drops the ball way to high and doesn't guide it on to his boot. The ball free falls for a massive distance. Some of those days at Cranbourne I actually thought he was going to have fresh air swings. Massive concerns for me but I too am hearing that he is number one on our hit list.

Yeah we disagree with this to an extent.

I do not think he is an elite kick, but he is no worst than say Nick Riewoldt. Hasn't stopped St.Kilda being a top rank team with him missing now and again.

If you notice, I would say 80% of players over 196cm have a higher ball drop being that they are so tall. You have your freaks in Ottens and Kosi who have a flawless action, but generally no they haven't got the best ball drop.

I think Butcher's field kicking is pretty good, so it leads me to believe that confidence and mindset, as well as a consistent approach to goal is what he is lacking.

He has elite footballing smarts and is an elite mark. He will be in contention for our first pick, do not be surprised if he is in yellow and black next season.

actually the hawks had 4 players under 21. we had 3.
the hawks had 12 players under 23. we had 9. (plus 3 who have turned 23 in the last 3 weeks.)

Average age
Richmond 24.39
Hawthorn 22.80

Rawlings has been fielding progressively older sides of late, whereas clubs would normally go younger at this stage of a write-off season. Can only presume that we are going to prune very deep on 25yo+ players.

Hawthorn on the other hand fielded the fifth-youngest team of any club this season and still pantsed us. We are far and away the worst side in the competition at present, although with things so unsettled at the club, I don't think recent games give an accurate indication of the potential of our list.

Edit: It was Hawthorn's youngest winning team since 1974.

Take away Bowden Johnson Simmonds & Brown & you will find our age will go below the Hawks!!

On average, Hawthorn has fielded the youngest team in the comp in 2009. Last year they were the second-youngest; they were the only finalist in the bottom eight in terms of average age. Hawthorn are remarkably advanced in their development by any benchmark.

This is right. Again a case of the stats. How many under 24's did we have? How many under 19's? et etc. games played? I don't know but I'm sure I can conjure a stat what would make us look more inexperienced than Hawthorn.

I'm not sure there's a way - we had 5 of the 6 oldest players in the match and they had 5 of the 6 youngest.

Claw in saying that who do you think we should target with our first pick?? A KPP in Butcher or a 'A' grade midfielder?
have always said it your first pick should always go on the best player available. as far as juniors go im out of touch what i have seen morabito i like obviously scully. clearly if we are to build for 5 yrs down the track kpps should be priorities.but i still believe you make your first pick count on the best available. dont mess with the pick that should get you a 10 yr marqee player at least.
if morabito at 3 is ranked the best player there we take him if butcher is the best ranked player left at 3 we take him. if they are thast close they cant be split takle the tall your more likely to pick up a decent mid than a decent tall with a second rounder.
