Did I hear correctly that the Hawks had 10 players under 21 last night, and we had 4.? The Hawks have an extensive injury list but to beat us by that much with such a young team bodes well for their future. Our young kids just don't seem ready yet but hopefully a bit of a taste this year, and a good pre-season, will hold them in good stead. I might have mis-heard the numbers though.

That's right Rosy but their middle bracket (22-28) is far more developed with Mitchell, Hodge, Sewell, Bateman, Brown, Lewis etc - it would be like RFC having 6 more Newmans' out there...

Looks like they have a better strength and conditioning coach/team down at Waverley Park as well!

It makes their list seem far healthier having a better middle bracket as well as such a glut of under 21s able to hold their own out there. We've certainly got some work to do.

And to think Wallace rated our list better long term than the Hawks. :blah

I'd love to see the Hawks go back to back. Don't think they can do it but I don't mind them as much as others on here seem to. We were pretty level with them not that long ago so it shows, if we make the right decisions we can pull ourselves out of the mire too. I hope. :help

I think we can thank Wallace for the players physical condition.

Agree Rosy I don't mind them either - Although we were level with them ladder position in 04, the core group of gun players for them were drafted 99-00 which means they were years ahead in development....

That is correct. However, we also had Nahas (21), Deledio (22), Graham (22), White (22), McGuane (22), Tambling (23), Thursfield (23), Jackson (23) and Thomson (23), so we're not exactly an 'experienced' team.

ppfffttt cattle nothing less. what decent or how many 22 thru 28 do we have to come in. how many do they. they played 10 21 or unders and still looked a class above we played just 4. lets stop making excuses if we have the quality it wont matter too much about age brackets.

22 thru 28 white tuck thursfield thomson tambling polo polak newman morton moore mcmahon mcguane jackson graham deledio 15 players in that age bracket and only about 4 keepers among the lot of em. theres your problem. you have 7 others in that bracket and almost to a man they too are duds.
its time we stopped making excuses and recognised the cattle for what they are. the majority of our 22 plus yr olds got belted by a younger more skilled side. next yr hawthorns two oldest players will be croad who will turn 30 and bateman who will turn 29. every other player will fall into the 18 thru 28 bracket. they have all positions covered with the exception of a power defender. you can bet they will target a big strong kpd this draft.

Average age
Richmond 24.39
Hawthorn 22.80

Rawlings has been fielding progressively older sides of late, whereas clubs would normally go younger at this stage of a write-off season. Can only presume that we are going to prune very deep on 25yo+ players.

Hawthorn on the other hand fielded the fifth-youngest team of any club this season and still pantsed us. We are far and away the worst side in the competition at present, although with things so unsettled at the club, I don't think recent games give an accurate indication of the potential of our list.

Edit: It was Hawthorn's youngest winning team since 1974.

Claw in saying that who do you think we should target with our first pick?? A KPP in Butcher or a 'A' grade midfielder?

The club want Butcher. We should end up with a choice of Morabito or Butcher and I believe the club will take the 197cm Key Position Forward.

noone has mentioned that our 3 best under 21s werent playing.
also strange that noone mentions our lack of interchange late in the game. something people are very quick to point out if we beat a team with some injuries.

Correct the Hawks had more under 21's running around last night, but it wasn't by design. They are missing a number of older players through injury/form, just as we're missing a number of youngsters through the same reasons.

Missing from last night that would normally have been there for the Hawks were: Dew, Guerra, Croad, Campbell, Roughead, Williams and Taylor. At the same time we have Cotchin, Vickery, Post and Collins missing.

On top of that its clear that we've packed it in for the season while the Hawks needed to win to keep their slim finals chances alive. We win and we lose 2-3 spots in draft.

I admit I know nothing about the draft this year.

Have read that Butcher has an awkward/unusual/poor kicking style?

Butcher's goal kicking average this year is in the average range rather than poor.

Hawks were also missing some kids through injury as well as their more experienced players. I'm sure the Hawks would have loved their more experienced players in, their injury list is obviously a concern for them. They still did very well when almost half of their team were under 21 though.
