Setaimata Sa charged over hotel rampage
SYDNEY Roosters utility Setaimata Sa has been stood down indefinitely by the NRL club after being charged with four offences over his alleged involvement in an incident at a Sydney hotel on Sunday night.
Sa was charged with assault, resisting arrest, failure to leave a licensed premises and malicious damage after police were called to a hotel in Arden Street, Coogee, shortly before 10pm.
The New Zealand international is also set to be fined by way of a breach of his NRL contract, with a decision on his long-term future with the club not to be determined until after the matter has been resolved by police, with Sa due in court on September 23.
Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce issued an apology on behalf of the club.
Sa, who was a late withdrawal through injury from the Roosters' NRL loss to Melbourne in Melbourne on Saturday night, will appear before the Roosters board at a time to be set.
He is contracted to the club through to the end of the 2012 NRL season.
It's the latest saga in a sorry season for the Roosters who have already been fined $50,000 because of the number of alcohol-related incidents involving the club.
Forward Nate Myles was suspended for six weeks over his drunken behaviour at a Central Coast hotel, where he defecated in a hotel corridor on a Sunday morning after attending a junior rugby league function.
Roosters coach Brad Fittler, who will be replaced by Brian Smith next season, fined himself $10,000 after being found drunk and shirtless and attempting to enter someone else's hotel room in Townsville.
Police were called to the Coogee Bay Hotel just before 10pm last night after reports Sa had become abusive towards staff and had allegedly smashed a window at the pub.
The Daily Telegraph understands five police cars from Eastern Beaches LAC responded to the call.
Police allege the incident began when Sa was refused entry to the hotel for being too drunk.
It is understood that Sa, 21, from Little Bay, had arrived at the hotel with a female companion.
Depsite being refused entry, he allegedly managed to make his way inside, where he was arrested by police.
Police allege an officer was struck by a gate when it was pushed on to him during the struggle to arrest Sa.
Sa was taken to Maroubra police station, where he was charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest, malicious damage and failing to leave a licensed premises.
He has been granted bail and will appear at Waverley Local Court on September 23.
Superintendent Peter McErlain said no officer was hurt in the incident.
"The man was handcuffed and taken away after a brief struggle," he said.
"None of our officers were injured."
