Noah Balta - Welcome to Tigerland

When your opponent kicks 2 on you early and misses a snap as well, all within the first 15 or 20 minutes you have been well beaten for that period.
Hawkins also beat him one on one for another mark but caught Balta high doing it luckily for us.
Balta was in trouble, no doubt
Not to nitpick but um yrah its a nitpick. Whacking someone across the chops, even inadvertently isnt beating someone for the mark. Thars a win to Balta for pressuring enough that hawkins failed to control himself.
And as B17 said we shouldnt be holding a FB responsible for a 2v1

Balta *smile* a simple run off in the first quarter. Cost us a goal. That can happen. But he kept running off Grampa Fatso after that.

He didn't get it right all the time. But Noah kept running.

The plan is obvious. We want Noah Balta to run off the full forward.

Noah Balta has been, from the moment we recruited him, a natural running back. He couldn't jump. He coudn't spoil. But he could mop and run and he still can.

Tried in ruck and forward in 2021-2, he can now jump. And spoil. Having learned the basics of a very basic position like full back Noah can use his natural game - running back - to rip matches open.

We are seeing this unfold.

When Balta breaks lines it takes heat off The Prince and Baker. Opens the ground up. And gives us the most damaging full back since Jade Rawlings.

(That last bit was a joke. Just sayen.)
The Prince is our primary matchwinner.
Bad guy coaches know this and try to shut him down (not CScott hehe)

So he needs a wingman. Bakes. Sometimes Shorty if he deigns to climb uphill to our backline. Hugo is learning atm.

Bringing Balta into this running game is genius. How do you stop it? By asking your gun full forward to chase? By playing a decoy full forward? Its unstoppable.
Lets see Balta get 500m+ gained.

And Broad. We know he can bounce. More improvement there.

Flossy and Grimes play the rocks. Safe use.

In the future Godcus will replace Grimes. And not be content to be safe.
Attack from the back

were we too quick to hand Balta another 2 years? that's not to say we still can't trade him. I feel like his footy IQ (or lack of it) is getting exposed in a battling team. And his athleticism would appeal to other teams.

For the sake of the argument, what would his trade value be on the open market? Late first rounder?

Would be crazy to trade him IMO.

He's 23. I seem to remember these type of comments were made about Rance. He won't hit his peak for a couple more years. I love the way he tries to take the game on but sometimes tries to over do it, which funnily enough sounds like Rance. Dimma called them Alex Rance moments. We are seeing the same from Balata.

Now I'm not saying he will get to the great mans level (he won't), but his style is very similar. He's an aggressive defender, he wants the ball in his hands, he wants to run the ball out of defence and he kicks long for ths switch. He's the perfect prototype defender for the current game, so no idea why we would consider trading him.

We need him to make less mistakes, of course we do, but we also want him to maintain his game style but removing some of those silly moments that we see too regularly from him at the moment.

Rance was doing this stuff in his first 3 years.. he was all Australian by this stage of his career.

The balta rance comparisons need to stop.

Balta is a very good player in his own right but is never going to be a rance.

I actually stated that in my post, that he won't be as good as the great man.

What I said was the exact same errors that we would see from Rance are there with Balta too, and thats largely because of the way that he plays the game. They were both aggressive defenders that wanted to take the game on, and they have both made mistakes by doing that.

Like I said, won't hit the same heights as Sir Rancelot, but he's a similar type of defender and those defenders that take the game on generally make more mistakes than those that don't, or at least the mistakes they make stand out a lot more.

We need to work this through with Noah rather than consider trading him. He's a dynamic defender that plays the game in the style that suits the modern game.

Yeah only quoted your post as it was recent on the topic.

Just the amount of oh rance was exactly like this too at the start is getting out of control.

I think he was still very good on the weekend. Gave him votes. And he’s probably our second most important player besides lynch.

Just a very different player to rance for mine.

Yeah sorry, I disagree. This is his 6th year in the system and shouldn’t be making the dumb decisions he continues to make week in week out. I’m not sure how much better he can get. I also feel that he was better 2-3 years ago.

2-3 years ago he was playing in one of the best defences ever assembled. His role was simple and he played it really well.

Actually Alex Rance was AA for the 1st time in 2014, the year he turned 25, the age Balta will in 2024.

I asked a local what he thought of Balta's game. "Amazing and *smile* in equal measure."

My take is still that people overrate mistakes.

Noah gives more run and taking the game on every week. The inclusion of Young helped here, particularly as Port had no talls to test Young.

Project player Flaky Noah has to keep getting busier to level up. I think he's on the right path. With experience he'll get less flaky.

Same, when he takes the game on and tries to be a part of the rebound, he's doing things that no one his size does.

And when he starts running north -south through the middle of the ground, we have a weapon that no one else does.

Defensively, he is going much better, still the odd brain fade with the ball but he is unique. Could he be KP Nick Blakey?

He can body very well, usually so that makes him a true tall, doesn't it, scooper?

We'd love a Blakey next to him. Dashing #4 back? Ideal. We know we want this. Hugo is unlikely to measure up but he is the right athlete and getting a go in the role. We should try to reinvent one. (This is Blair's problem.) Cottrell comes to mind but is getting a game at Carlton now.

Noah is still an immature prospect IMO. That slap was brilliant except for it being a throw. Heh heh. His hands are much smarter than his feet. If he breaks into the corridor and handballs a lazy 30m through the guts (though ball) it rips the game apart. He' not licensed to do that as yet but we have time. Defence first.

We can bank more than one defensive position for our rebuild, among them tall back- Noah Balta. We can keep the back six largely settled for years but we can develop players.

Labrador Blakey. That's what Balta can become, the bigger and slighter dumber version of what Blakey does until we get someone next to him to play the dashing #4 back. And then he can become slightly less dashing.

Yesterday we had a typical Noah Balta game. Some of the stuff he did was incredibly good, his intercept marking was awesome.

Then every now and again we had the brain fades, the poor decision making.

I’m not sure he will ever cut them out, hopefully he will get better but who knows? To me the good far outweighs the bad and I love watching him play, partially because he is a incredibly good at times and partially for the entertainment value

I reckon maturity will cut his errors. Some really great moves to basic stuff ups. Big gap so far.

Needs to play within his own limitations. Did this in 2021 to good effect, still reckon he's better now than then as he's developed his intercept/attacking game from the backline.
