This is Kristians summation from over on footy tragic.

PICK 16 – GEELONG: NICK VLASTUIN

Height: 187cm, Weight: 86kg, DOB: 19/4/1994

Recruited from: Northern Knights

Vlastuin is another one of my favourites in the draft, and if Ollie Wines hadn’t have been available at Richmond’s pick 9, this is where I would have placed him.

For some reason, talking to a lot of people, they don’t regard him as a top ten pick. Obviously I don’t have him top ten in this draft, but if I were to do it ‘power rankings’ style, he’d most likely be in there. It’s almost like he’s ‘unfashionable’. Why? I have no idea.

Vlastuin is the closest thing to Luke Hodge I have seen coming through the junior ranks. The half-back Hodge, and the midfield Hodge.

It’s everything from his big size, excellent foot skills, manic attack on the ball and leadership qualities that remind me of Hodge. Hopefully he doesn’t have as many injury issues, although I think this is the reason why he isn’t talked about a bit more.

He’s been playing sore nearly all season, and as a result we didn’t get to see much midfield time from him in the National Champs, but he still made the All-Australian side. He consistently used the footy above 75% and cut off lots of attacks off half back, showcasing his ability to read the play and take intercepting marks in space or contested.

In the TAC Cup it was much the same, playing 10 games and averaging 18 disposals, 5 marks and 6 tackles at a healthy efficiency rate.

At his best, and fittest, Vlastuin is a legitimate inside midfielder. He craves the contested ball and you’ll struggle to find many players who go in harder at the footy (Steve Morris is a good example).

With his big size he’s able to position himself well and win those clearances with ease, and that will only translate into the AFL.

On the outside, he’s polish, which is why I rate him so high. He’s not the absolute best kick in the draft, but he’s up there. He’s very safe with short distance kicking and he has very good penetration on his long kicks, safely covering 50m.

Aerially he doesn’t have the biggest jump as he’s not really an athlete as such, but I really, really like his overheard marking. I think it will become a feature in his game at AFL level.

The reason he probably isn’t that ‘fashionable’ is because he’s not a pure athlete. He’s not overly quick and doesn’t have the spring in the air that some others have.

At the Combine he didn’t test for any of the jumps or sprints, but he ran a 13.2 shuttle run in 30 degree weather, and was in the top 40% in the 3km time trial. He clearly isn’t at his fittest, so the myth that he doesn’t have a tank is officially put to bed.

What Vlastuin is, is a natural footballer. I have no doubt he’ll become an AFL captain one day. He leads on the field by example, and supporters will love him because he gives his all at every contest.

Half a dozen games in and it's looking like Kristian had at least half an idea of Flossy's capability. Hands up the doubters, time to consider the size of your slice of humble pie.

Seriously, did we have doubters?

After our game on Monday night, I went through each team board on BF to read their non-our team discussion.

There is huge amounts of Vlastuin love. Poor old Melbourne again :hihi some are already doubting their choice of Toumpas over Wines/Vlastuin.

There was a few who didn't rate him till late first round or early second, thought we'd be paying overs using pick nine on a chunky half back flanker . Think young Crazy Flossy might have surprised a few.

Never professed to being an expert with juniors but from limited viewing he looked ok to me. Only doubts I had were whether we should take Grundy ahead of him if available.
As it was Grundy slipped way past us, hasn't played a game due to back problems and we've picked up a very promising young tall in McBean with our 3rd pick.
Perhaps our recruiters knew what they were doing?

really good summation by Kristian.

I was a bit un-impressed with the highlights package they had of him on the AFL site - thought he was a limited plodder. Completely changed my mind once I saw the extended highlights on the RFC site after we drafted him. It appears the AFL site was showing the lowlights.

Interesting on Footy Classified Lloyd (who coached Vlas with the AIS) said that Vlas got a wake up call when he came to our club and realised he was about 6 kilos over weight. Vlastuin obviously had the character to respond ans had excelled in our club environment

That makes sense to me, the reduced weight has made him look much more nimble, not to mention the fact that his ankle has fully mended. Agility is one area that has been a pleasant surprise, certainly from the benchmark set at the u/18's.

At the moment he's in the top tier, let's hope he maintains the rage and becomes truly elite. I sense that this draft will go down as one of the best in recent memory. So far I've been greatly impressed with Wines, Macrae, Stringer, Kennedy, Thurlow, Lonergan and Mayes. Plowman, Menzel, Grundy and Whitfield are also players who I expect to excel. I've got a sneaking suspicion that the clubs who bombed out with their selections will cop the full force of the media sledgehammer, thankfully it won't be us.

Bully I reckon we "lucked in" with selecting Vlas and about time our planets aligned.

I was remarking to a few people the other day that I wasn't that taken with Stringer or Whitfield so far but it's early days.

Certainly the ankle injury could be a blessing in disguise, let's just hope Vlas kicks on from here and becomes an elite midfielder. Our stocks are already brimming with talent at the top end and as it stands currently, it's nigh on impossible to tag all our A graders at once. Having another would be a rare luxury we haven't witnessed in 30 years.

As for Stringer, the difference between being serviceable and being a bona fide gun will come down to his ability to run through the midfield. He could be the next Jack Darling or he could turn out to be yet another Doggies forward who fails to live up to the hype.

Whitfield on the other hand will almost certainly make the grade, as an all-round package he's simply too talented not to eke out a lengthy career. The key here will be development, and it's still uncertain whether GWS will be the best place to hone his skills. Former number one picks David Swallow and Tom Scully provide a timely reminder that lowly clubs can be poor nurturers of talent.

My mind was made up on this kid as soon as he played his first NAB cup game, what a gem we have here, is it too early to say that he will be the next captain of the Richmond Football Club after Cotchin gives it up in 5-6 years time.
