Alex Smith will probably get traded, their are plenty of teams that would love to have Smith.
I still rate Smith a top 10 QB in the league.

SF probably do to, they probaly think they have 2 of the top 10 QB's

Fantastic finish to the Seattle Atlanta game with Seattle hitting the front with 35 sec to go but Atlanta producing a quick drive to get within field goal range and score. As a 49ers fan I'm glad Atlanta got up

I would have preferred to play Seattle at Candlestick...actually I'd prefer to play any team at home.
But we have Atlanta on the road, still think we'll beat Atlanta who I have not rated as a threat to us all year anyway....
I suppose that theory will be put to the test.

Its a loophole in the rules IMO when a side can call a timeout and then set up again for another shot at a fieldgoal when they miss one. If they missed the second one could they just keep doing it? As a footy fan, and an NRL fan, it just doesn't seem right. I admit i was barracking for Seattle which is where my significant other is from.

How snake? The refs signed the timeout, the Seahawks defenders stood up from the scrum, but Bryant just ran in and kicked the ball when he shouldn't have. Whoever called the timeout did it before Bryant kicked and missed.

Falcons v 49ers should be a great game next week.

So if the first attempt went through it wouldn't have counted TF? I think I've just misunderstood what went on.

49ers q back Kapernick is pretty good to watch. Runs like Richo

That's right, it wouldn't have counted. Ref's signed the timeout after one of the coaches called it but Bryant didn't notice it......those damn helmets! ;D

Some people would find it tedious but one good thing the NFL has is that refs are well aware of small infringements during the game by throwing the yellow flag (compared to ours where some costly ones go unnoticed) and also coaches can 'challenge' (red flag) a decision or a play they disagree with, where it is then reviewed.

Yeah I like all the the reviews and technicalities of NFL, just all seems to fit the package. Its a big chess game. I'd hate any of it in footy but I like it in NFL. I did have some trouble working out the extra time rules in the Denver-Baltimore game, great game, still can't really work it out. They said it wasn't sudden death anymore, but 15 min periods till a winner, but it ended as soon as the ravens scored. Can you clear that up?

I suppose this type of process wouldn't really suit our game style because of the delays involved, but to have corrected decisions in a final really makes you wonder. I suppose we're starting anyway with that 'goal review' we now have (even if it's reviewed terribly).

I am not 100% but this is how I understand it.

Each team in overtime has to have a go at offensive drive. As soon as the 2nd team, is getting their offensive drive, it then straight away becomes the next teaam to score wins(if the first team didn't score).

Say the first team on offense in overtime scores in their first drive, then the 2nd team still has to have a chance on offense.

I hope thats not more complicated for you.

Thanks U2, that was my suspicion and makes sense in terms of what actually happened, but it wasn't how the commentators explained it. And they were going to great lengths to explain it and make it clear. They explained that the extra time rules had been changed due to the team with first possession winning most of the time, (makes sense) they said that the teams kept playing 15 min periods until there was a winner at the end of the period (makes sense). No team scored in first 15 min, then started again, then Ravens scored at start of second period and pandemomium breaks out. I even read the official rules and still couldn't work it out.

It's exactly how Bono explained it, however if the 1st team in possession scores a touchdown anytime during the OT, and before the other team gains possession, it's game over. If it's just a field goal or safety, then it continues on until the other team has their offensive drive. Once both teams have their offensive drive (opportunity to possess), then it's all sudden death no matter what happens or what points are scored.

In the Denver-Baltimore OT, both teams had possession but neither scored, and therefore it went into a 2nd OT where Baltimore had possession, scored a field goal and won.

Re: NFL 2012-13

This whole overtime situation still needs looking at I think.
In the regular season this match would have ended a tie as there was no winner at the end of overtime (They don't play a 2nd overtime)
The 15 minute clock in OT during the playoffs seems pointless as they will just keep playing until one team scores anyway.
Which is exactly how the regular season should be, I mean what is the point of OT if it still doesn't decide the winner?

I do like the improvement of giving each team a possession if a TD isn't scored on the first drive however.

A similar gripe I still have with the AFL playing a Grand Final the following week in a tie.
It just doesn't nake sense.

In saying that what a fantastic week of matches! Go you 9ers!!!

Get around them!!

49ers haven't won a playoff game on the road since 1989 though, But I like our chances this time.
Even though we have lost our last 4 against ATL.
9ers will have a bad taste in their mouth when they lost to the Giants last year in the NFC Championship game,
when basically a mistake cost them the game.

It's a better matchup for the 9ers...we are a very physical team. Then again so were the Seahawks.
We rely on our defense to get the job done whereas the Falcons are offense orientated.

9ers are a run-first offense that like to control the line of scrimmage and work play-action,
Atlanta is pass-first and relies on QB Matt Ryan to dice up defenses and push the pace.

If Vernon Davis can have good game...we'll blow them away.

Hopefully Akers goes okay because he's been ordinary at times.

In all betting lines 9ers are heavy favs $1.50 to @2.70

Re: NFL 2012-13

On face value a Niners Patriots Superbowl would be a big one.

Will they get there is the question.

Ravens are schizophrenic at times and Falcons i dont know much about at all.

If Kapa looks for him!
Crabtree and Kapa are just clicking right now but he needs to realise Vernon is a serious talent too.
He gave him a few looks last game so hopefully starts to use them both, especially once we're in the red zone.
He was the go to man for Alex Smith and we'll be so much harder to predict if he starts throwing Vernons way as well

I'm tipping Matty Ice will turn to water after we bring the heat on defense:)

Re: NFL 2012-13

Kaep's the talk of the town at the moment.

Looks like 49ers and Pats are the favorites for the Superbowl and I reckon San Fran can knock off Atlanta tomorrow for their first Superbowl in 18 years.

Re: NFL 2012-13

If it's a 9ers/Ravens Superbowl.....imagine the next Harbaugh's family gathering :hihi

Falcons have struggled all season against mobile QB's like Cam Newton and Russell Wilson etc.
Atlanta can beat us...but if both teams play at their best the 9ers have more ways to win.
Most people believe a 9ers blow out win is more likely than a Falcons victory.
