Nankervis !!

Yes 3 in a row . He was very confused by those decisions.
Absolutely no doubt he was targeted and then punished by the poor quality , pre-directed umpires to set an example.
We have seen this multiple times previously.
Very very poor and unprofessional umpiring department at AFL.
Yep and most frees were in the first quarter. Had to be some sort of changed interpretation rule that required Nanks to change his game style.

I haven't watched a replay but every time it went to the middle in the first quarter it was another free clearance to North courtesy of the scum in yellow.

Wow clearances have suddenly become a Nanks issue. Average clearances per opposition, 2022 15th, 2021 18th, 2020 16th, 2019 16th, 2018 18th, 2017 11th, 2016 12th, 2015 11th.

We didn't recruit to be a gun clearance team. And that hasn't changed. How many of our younger guys are inside bulls? Tap rucking is over-rated, the cattle at ground level is what counts. Perfect example, Demons have one of the best ruckmen going around, won the hit out count easily but they were smashed in clearances by Port 27 to 40. Our pressure game was taken away from us by the AFL. You recruit to your game style and this can't be changed overnight.

It's not a Nanks issue, he is getting more hitouts than ever in his career but he was never recruited for that to be his strength. Our issues run much deeper than that.
One of the best posts I’ve ever read on here, great stuff

The report was ridiculous. The umpires were gunning for him on the weekend. Everything he did they had him in their sights. I wonder if his physicality has been discussed at HQ?

No doubt about it, ToO.

Ruck frees are a mystery. If you wanted to *smile* a team in the arse, giving six centre bounce frees against is a great way to hand the opposition momentum.

I've been on Nank watch for a month or so. Toby's got demons atm. We'll get to them later. Dimma's public appeal to the umpires is about giving Nank a cuddle. Public support.

The umps are ruling against him at HQ. They're noting his tactics at CB and calling him for blocks. As well as Dimma's public appeal there will be a private RFC appeal underway.

Toby is doting on his knee. "Took himself off in the last quarter" against GCS. Scans reveal no further damage but he's feeling it. It's not right but it's as right as it will be.

I think that's why Toby looks to body rather than jump, in the main. That's why he gets position at CB, position sometimes ruled illegal by umpires. Rather than just hurtling into say Cameron Coleman-Jones. (Noah went straight at him.)

When they reported Nankervis on Saturday that looked like hyper alertness. I totally agree with Oldster that it was HQ at work. Nankervis looked bemused.

Behind the scenes we can use historic ruck PCL numbers and Toby's current condition to contend that he must be allowed to stand under it at CB. I think we will or have.

Back to his demons. Toby is not always running in games. Sometimes blocking when he should hurtle. He lifted against Geelong. And got aggressive. He lifted against Norfs and was awesome on the gallop against a very mediocre opponent.

He's got the world on is shoulders. A nagging injury. Limitations that are exploited every week to varying degrees. And the umpires hunting him. A lot of frustration and the occasional hint of despair.

Despite all that he's not far off it. When Toby lifts he really gives us something. I'm satisfied that Dimma has intervened with a public cuddle for our embattled co-captain.

Let's see how this works out.

For his Tiger career Nank has given away between 1.5 and 2.6 frees a game. This year is 2.9.

And for me, most of Nank's free are blatantly obvious and silly.

Taps don't matter. (We all think this most of the time.) Then why have a ruck at all? You have to stop the other ruck from guaranteeing grass to his smalls. Get body in him. Interrupt. Get hand on his wrist if you can't reach the ball. Interrupt. If smalls could do that you wouldn't play a ruck. That's why every club plays a ruck and some play two.

Read this in the context of - eight goals from stoppage.

First quarter. Ball up inside Norfs's 50. Nank leans into Goldstein, Goldstein bends and jumps for a clean skyhook over Nankervis and just wide of his hip to the hole. Zurhaar is waiting innocuously out of view. Norfs hold position. Grimes off guard. Zurhaar hits the hole, the designated grass. Nank off balance. Vlastuin gets some heat on the ball as Zurhaar arrives, forces a fumble. The rampaging Zurhaar gathers as he destroys the line and inevitably goals.

Final quarter. Game on the line. Ball up deep in Norfs's forward line. Nank leans into Goldstein, who doesn't even jump this time. Just flicks it to the hole that Zurhaar will run to. Norfs goal.

A good tap ruck can dominate a game in ways best observed on the scoreboard.

I think we'd won the first 2 or 3 centre bounces with ease and then the umps went bang, bang, bang and suddenly North got momentum with the ball out of the centre. I didn't know at the time and still don't know, what any of those 3 were given for. The last 1 was given for high when he won the hit out I seem to remember. Maybe I should watch it again, but then do I really want to watch that again???

Those frees were BS, pure and simple. What they do and don't allow in ruck duels varies from minute to minute, its a dog's breakfast.

Maybe we should put Liam Baker in the ruck and he can get a free every time for high contact.

They'd probably just get him for tunneling instead. Or report him for intentional, low contact, high impact when his head hits the oppo rucks ballsack!

He certainly did jimbob. Gunning for him.

There was no 'It's a hard game to umpire' rhetoric from the coach today. I reckon the club is sick to the eyeballs of us being umpired differently to every other club.

About time we started whinging about it publicly & heaping pressure back on the AFL.

I think our free kick differential has improved the last 6 weeks or so after it was highlighted in the media. And i don’t think it was a coincidence that we only got a RS nom after our low number of noms was highlighted in the media.

Dimma did that today. The AFL admitted they were incorrectly awarded against Nankervis. A lot of good that does us now. It won’t make any difference. The flogs will be back to it this week. We’ll complain, they’ll say sorry got it wrong and walk away sniggering about how they screwed us yet again.
