Moon Landing - Fact or fiction?

Being that most have the conspiracy theories have surfaced fairly recently I'd say the result might be a little different now than in 1999.

I'd agree based on perception, though I doubt the figures would change markedly if the survey was repeated. Every major world-shaping event seems to attract its share of people who question the historic version of events, but I can't think of any specific conspiracy theories that have gained popular acceptance (~50% or higher).

Having actually met and talked to our one and only astronaut Andy Thomas, I would say that there is absolutely no doubt we as human beings went to the moon. The conspiracy theorists can have their fun, but that's what it is - conspiracy theory.

There are currently three sources of Moon rocks on Earth:

1) Those collected by US Apollo missions

2) Samples returned by the Soviet Union Luna missions

3) Rocks that were ejected naturally from the lunar surface by cratering events and subsequently fell to Earth as lunar meteorites.

During the six Apollo surface excursions, 2,415 samples weighing 382 kg (842 lb) were collected, the majority by Apollo 15, 16, and 17.

The three Luna spacecraft returned with an additional 326 g (0.66 lb) of samples.

Since 1980, nearly 100 lunar meteorites have been collected on Earth, with a total mass of over 32 kg. Many of these were discovered via the ongoing ANSMET, or ANtarctic Search for METeorites, program.

While we're on conspiracy theories, I still have my doubts that Collingwood won the 1990 premiership. Since 1958, they have had much better teams both before and since than the 20 that (supposedly) donned the black and white on that (supposedly) fateful day. Ask yourself this - how could someone like Tony Shaw win a Norm Smith Medal AND captain an AFL Premiership team?

I reckon the Hawkers got bored of winning flags and felt sorry for them.

As we approach 50 year since humans apparently set foot on the moon I thought it would be good to revisit this thread..

Still can't help but feel that it was an elaborate hoax done with the help of Hollywood special effects. A reminder the Kubrick blockbuster 2001 - A Space Odyssey came out just a year earlier..

It just seems bizarre to me that no other country has ever landed on the moon & in a day of vastly digital communication & technology, nobody has returned there to do it all again.

How did they broadcast the landing into people's lounge rooms of the event from 384,400 km away with 1969 technology?

It just doesn't add up to me but that's not to say it didn't happen as it would have been incredibly difficult to fool the entire world.

Hopefully one day soon they'll go back there & someone will find evidence that this really happened. Discuss.

Yes it is an old chestnut but I am fascinated by the 6 supposed moon landings that began back in 1969 and finished with the Apollo17 mission in 1972.

Seems there are plenty of skeptics out there that think the whole thing was an elaborate Hollywood production using fancy cameras, expansive sets and wires.

Personally I have my doubts about the missions as I find it very odd that they have not returned there in an age where communication and media is infinitely better than it was 35+ years ago. The 'next' moon landing is not due until 2018!

I also find it extremely hard to fathom that the space technology at that time was good enough to not only land men on the moon but to bring them home when you see the tin cans that they had for transport.

Still I am prepared to be enlightened on the subject.

Let the debate begin. Were the landings true or false?

There's very little scientific benefit to landing on the moon again. Been there, done that, not much else to gain by going again. The expense doesn't justify it. It's why they are aiming for Mars instead.

I really don't know much about the moon landing except for seeing the photos they took, but always wondered what that light was? Apollo 11's spotlight or the sun?

The Americans have apprently been there & gained the science 50 years ago. Why has no other country ever gone there? Do they just accept their version?
