Mid season Draft

Interesting comments from Plapp.

“I feel Riley has a fair bit to offer. While his footy hasn’t been outstanding, it’s been at a level that deserves a bit of recognition and another opportunity. He’s a specific mid. He’s an inside mid who wins a lot of ball. He’s not for everyone, I feel. But there could be a gap there for that type of player from a list management point of view.’’
Not sure how much demand there is for one dimensional midfielders that can’t spread from the contest.

It is a big question, here's my uninformed thoughts:

Retiring: Prestia, Grimes, Naismith
Possibly Retiring: McIntosh
Likely to re-sign short term: Martin
Free Agency: Graham
Possibly Leaving: Baker
Delist: Dow, Colina
In the balance: Cumberland
Re-sign: Coulthart, Pickett

I would definitely re-sign Coulthard I reckon he has more potential than Cumberland who has been disappointing.

I would keep Pickett, for all his faults he puts in every week and people seem to notice his mistakes more than his good play. I reckon part of the issue with Pickett is the way the umps and the MRO hate him. Screw them!

If McIntosh wants to stay I would re-sign.

Dusty is an enigma, seems to be the way he likes it, I would re-sign him for 2 years if he wants it.

Colina has been a Cat B rookie for how long? Not happening, waste of the rookie spot.

I would want to keep Baker, but if he wants to go, we extract as much as we can.

DRioli should stay.

Dow I cannot see being a permanent centre in a competitive team, he doesn't have the size nor does he have the disposal skills or any other attributes to make up for his deficiencies, just not competitive in today's game with the beasts in the centre.

Prestia and Grimes both have failing bodies, I reckon they will retire.

I'm sure I have missed some.

Take 2 in the MSD as Yze said, anyone we take should not be for 2024, this year is gone, who cares if we don't have a ruck for a while. Look for players who can develop into AFL level players. Archie May and El Nour would do me.

DS
Agree with just about all of this. Particularly the last line but would reverse that order. When he returns to fitness, El Nour will hold down a key back roll with great distinction!
Can see Broad joining Baker out west and possibly McIntosh retiring or pushed.

I don't get the qualms about drafting too many players in the mid season draft.
Either they're good enough and we keep em.
Or they re not and we dont.

What are the reasons to not draft.
* We might not know after 4 months?
True but we can assess attributes such as competitiveness, professionalism, character, coachability, standards. Tiktok skills. All this can inform our list mgt decisions.

* football cohesion. Gotta learn a gameplan and team mates. Disrupts existing players and coaches.
True but disrupted much anyway?

* Coach resources are taken away from current players.
True but resources are spread across the entire list, including the half that is injured.
Maybe we got scope.

* might take games from the cubs.
True but the cubs already are getting games. Some will need a spell during the year.
And if the MSD draftees are better then give them games.

* salary cap exposure.
True but there is allowance for extra players. And some like Prestia and Lynch will not get the bonuses they mightve expected eg top 10 finish on the bnf. I don't think its black and white, i think there is leeway.

* waste of the soft cap
By giving opportunity and coaching to possible long term RFC players?
Its not a waste.

* not enough good players.
You sure? Best way to find out is to give them a chance.

* they might be better than our current list and we can't fit them in.
True. So if we draft anyone better than Dow and Cumberland and Coulthard and Green and Ross we dont have to get rid of them!

* its too short for draftees to join a club.
True but they all nominated and willingly want to pay afl.

* most MSD draftees are no good.
True, same for the main draft. Give it a Swing

*they might be good.
Sure.

Lets put Fawcett on the LTI and draft 5.
We might get 1 or 2.
Wouldnt that be grand!
You missed a big one which is many of the players don't want it and quite a few have nominated 18 month contracts.

Most of these guys have jobs, so they would have to quit with the hope they get a longer term contract. For interstate guys that is an even bigger risk as they have to quit their jobs and move.

Is there a list?
how many? There is normally only a handful.
Our 3rd and 4th picks aren't going to be affected / on 18mths

Makes no sense we are cruelled by injuries and any one taken in the mid season draft is given a 4 month contract, it's a free swing.
It's not a free swing,as the 4 spots they get have got 4 other injured players who come back onto the list.
It also costs about 60,000 per player and if we fill all 4 temporary list spaces,it causes huge grief when main draft comes.
We also probably rate 6-7 players whom could all be gone when our second pick comes.

Someone will know but I heard that a reasonable number of players have nominated 18 months
Obviously the club knows exactly, but for us punters this is meaningless. We don't know and its unlikely to be consequential.
It'd impact our first pick only.

For reference 24 players have had a medical.
At last half of those would not put a longer term contract down. So by our 2nd pick almost all our choices would be 6 months

It's like he's describing a mid-strength beer, which even then is flattering for RCD.

I am certainly not advocating picking him up but he is generating the best numbers he has ever had at a VFL level. Probably because he is now better physically prepared and more mature.

Is Cartoon's interest in RCD a joke or what? Are they taking the mickey out of us?

RCD should've asked for another referee.

26 players put 18 month contracts on their head.

We've said we will have capacity to take up to 3 players, having placed, Naismith, Clarke and Gibcus on the LTIL.

I see 342 players have nominated... 8 from the Richmond VFL team have... Davidson, Elnour, Garner, George, Johnson, May, Street and Wilson.... although you'd think Street and Mutaz unlikely with the recent injuries they've sustained.

None of the Richmond VFL players made the medical testing list which you would think would be a pretty good indicator of any interest in our VFL players... and those most likely to be picked in general

Collier-Dawkins also not on that list so you wonder if it's mainly the interstate clubs who drive it.

The list I'd like to see is the one that discloses the contract length nominated.

AFL Mid-Season Draft medical testing list

Remy Maclean (Eastern Ranges)
Will McLachlan (Geelong Falcons)
Joe Pike (Geelong Falcons)
Lachie Voss (Sandringham Dragons)
Illiro Smit (Eastern Ranges)
Dayten Uerata (Bendigo Pioneers)
Geordie Payne (Tasmania Devils)
Ben Hopkins (Dandenong Stingrays)
Oskar Smartt (Essendon VFL)
Jack Hutchinson (Collingwood VFL)
Ajang Kuol Mun (Geelong VFL)
Tobyn Murray (Geelong VFL)
Caleb Ernst (Coburg)
Max Hall (Box Hill)
Corey Eillson (Williamstown)
Brynn Teakle (East Fremantle)
Jacob Blight (Peel Thunder)
Jasper Scaife (West Perth)
Toby Murray (Adelaide SANFL)
Luke Beecken (Woodville-West Torrens)
Noah Howes (South Adelaide)
Will Patton (West Adelaide)
Kelsey Rypstra (North Adelaide)
Matt Ling (Norwood)

Draft for 2026 not 2024
whats the success rate of the MSD?
20 games a pass
50 games success
100 games wildly successful.

With that in mind I'd consider a 25yo.
For example Tom Murphy at Frankston.
HE could play 5 more years, but even 3 years and 40 games gives McAuliffe and the class of 24 time to develop, cover for our experienced players and we don't need to keep a Dow (for example)
