Matthew Clarke

Interesting post and landscape isn't it.

Dont forget Clarke was in recruiting at Melb for 11 years before joining us. That's 26 years in the game. You'd think he's well and truly mentally ready for another challenge.

We always generally keen to promote from within if we can.

Not sure we can though. We have FJ who is into semi retirement. Rhy Geischen who is too green around the gills. Sam Cousens (still out of WA?) has done a great job but is part time leysy believes and would be a big step up (and over east).

Trent Mosbey heads up the AFLW recruiting and is pretty experienced. Doesn't scream promotion though.

missed anyone? Hard to know unless involved internal first hand but reckon might be external appointment.
Wil Thursfield was probably the heir apparent internally but North snapped him up.

No Northern club has lost out at the time of drafting. Ever. Not one market price or overpay.

All four Gold zcoast lads woud’ve made the AFL regardless is the Suns were their or not.
Sun's are only just getting all the pieces together. AFLW, and VFL teams are strong. But never made finals. Attendance will improve when the men's team improves

AFL footy is getting stronger on the Goldie. and NNSW. it's too early to take away academy at this stage.

Maybe compo for the 1st round pick only.

Good assessment.

FWIW, I think Clarke’s legacy (and future) hinge on the outcome of the 2021 draft. Up to that point, he didn’t have much in the way of draft picks to play with and it shows in the results. However, 5 picks inside the top 30 in the 2021 draft is a decent hand in anyone’s view and we need at least three of them to become very good players. On results to date, Clarke should be at the very least, a little nervous.
It's hard putting a KPI on drafting . We seemed to pick skinny ass kids forever, but were saved by our VFL players. Young, Tresize. and Bauer Coulthard types

Gibcus, sonsie had a great debut year . B
Gibcus injured, sonz lost form.
Clarke can play.

It's interesting, I reckon the three candidates the Eagles have identified is a really good list.

Clarke has been above average but it feels like we need a change and so might he, it's been 15 years at Richmond for him. That's a good stint in any job.
The Giants have put together an excellent list and changed who they are since we destroyed them in 2019. Caruso has been a huge part of that and made some inspired picks. He has been there 10 years and has continually shown an ability to keep turning over players after pick 20. A bit like Clarke, his early picks haven't always been great but he has plucked some gems later on. We should be talking to him.

The wildcard is Binuk Kodituwakku. This is his LinkedIn description of his roles.

Currently, I serve as the Director of Recruiting Strategy for Duke Football, where I'm dedicated to ensuring our student-athletes can maximize their opportunities in the evolving landscape of college football.

Additionally, I'm driving the establishment of our football analytics capability at Duke. Leveraging data-driven insights, we're working to make informed decisions that strengthen the team's performance and strategic approach.

Before relocating to the United States, I led the digital transformation of the football department at the Adelaide Crows. Partnering closely with List Manager Justin Reid, we also crafted a player acquisition and salary cap strategy that positioned the team for success.

I love having conversations around the intersection of data analytics, player evaluation, and organizational strategy in the world of sports, so feel free to reach out!

To have gone from the AFL to the NCAA in a recruiting role is a really interesting career path. NCAA recruiting is cutthroat, you aren't drafting you are going against every other school trying to sign players. Identifying the right player for your program is hard work. Duke are mid-strength college team at best so getting a top high school talent to commit to your program would be hard work. You would be looking for hidden gems everywhere, the data would be driving your decisions. Having moved over to the USA 12 months ago, you would think he would want more time there. Unless the Eagles know he wants to come back.

And the Crows looked prime to make an assault on finals, the list build was done by Binuk.

I wonder who we have on the backburner? Is there any internal candidates?
Wasnt / isnt Hamish Ogilvie the man @ Adelaide ?

We can't have 5 picks and only 1 or maybe 2 into players. Thats 1990's drafting not 2023 drafting.
TOo many misses since 2010.
we shouldve been rejuvenating on the run but the same blokes have dropped us into the bottom 4.
How can GWS find Sam Taylor or Brett Daniels with picks in the 20's but we get Collier Dawkins and Coleman Jones types??
let Clarke go and go after the Sydney bloke and the Brisbane bloke who seem to hit gems.
Brisbane picked a kid in the 20's who on the weekend kicked 5 in a practice match.
They got Bailey we got Higgins.
Not good enough
The Sydney bloke just purely because of the drafting of Warner and to a lesser degree, Glyden.

Yeah Ogilvie has been head of recruiting at Adelaide for a decade or so (Clarke's role) when took over when Rendell was sacked from memory.

Sounds like Scoops man was more our Hayden Hill. Who provide data to the recruiting teams to help analyse the draft pool from that angle.

Eagles looking to elevate "the data driver" into a full-time list manager role. I reckon he's up for it.

I'd hope Yze has someone at Melbourne he could draft across. Jason Taylor is best in class.

You'd think Taylor would take some shifting considering he'd be moving across for the same role. He'd want Blair's role.

It will come down to working under Blair.

Just a personal view, but he strikes as someone who would be more involved than most List Mgrs in the recruiting of juniors.

If so, not all heads of recruitment would like that. Especially proven one's used to running that ship.

Jason Taylor is a great recruiter but not much of a human. $1.50 if we hired him long-buried indiscretions would find their way into the papers.

Will throw another random name that is a long-shot.

Is the greatest recruiter of the modern game gettable.

Stepped down from List Mgr two years ago. Temporarily retired. Since came back to work under someone with 1/4 of his experience.

Life member and legend of his club. But is he happy? At 63 he still has a few years left.

Probably get a No. But worth asking the question (with a big offer) to Stephen Wells.

And Kerston and Lang and Malakelis
And pulled Blairs pants down with Max Holmes.
Absolutely bent him over.
*Maybe we can stooge them, they can have Brown back and we can get Holmes.

**How arrogant? Just won our 3rd flag and we started giving away 1st rounders.
As if we have been the best at drafting club in the history of the AFL.

One NAB League (or whetever it's called) game. Ballsy call by Wells.
How many games did he watch of Collier-Dawkins, Coleman Jones and Higgin??

Collingwood let Adams go because they have McCrae ready to go after 2 yrs in the 2's.
They have a intercept defender ready to go in Alan and a marking medium forward in McInnes.

We shouldve had 2 or 3 kids with 20-30 VFL games under there belts ready to go.
But we don't.
The ones we have are all got question marks on them or they are just waiting to be delisted.
