Matthew Clarke

Was best available, absolutely the right pick. I thought he’d be gone.

Fits our game plan, wins footy on the inside and has mongrel.

The Toby Greene comparison is a really good one.

Guess who made these comments about Jack Higgins - yep you guessed it, Scoop. What a turn around with the benefit of hindsight.
Cool story bro, you rate my view on par with the bloke who makes the picks. I’m going ok.

Ha, just pointing out how happy you were at the time with the Higgins selection and obviously Clarke back then but you have thrown him under the bus now. Hindsight is a wonderful gift but if you are knocking him you are knocking yourself.

So, have we worked out yet whether we are sacking Clarke ….or giving him a pay rise and contract extension ?

Why do these things always take so long on PRE ?
Wait to see what happens against the Wizz Fizz first :p

Cool, go look at the others I got right with foresight not hindsight. One pick right in that draft in Balta, who I wanted as well.
I wanted Oscar Allen in the CCJ pick, so I would’ve got 2 out of the 3 picks right. Better than Clarke. Not bad for a chump.

Hindsight is easy people. 17 a bust? Fruitcake city. We won the flag! by definition the draft was the most difficult for us. Us. We got Balta. In our mitt. He's in the side. Walk up start. That means we won the draft, statistically, objectively. I'll say it again, statistically, objectively.

But thats not all folks, we got Higgins who we got evens for on a trade, and regardless of what you think of him, is still playing seniors. Ditto CCJ.

It ain't the vibe, its data dummy. We remain ahead of the curve.

Ridiculous.
Data is we need 3 picks to be top 25 players.
It means nailing the first 2 and a rookie.
Got to get those picks right.

Actually no.
You hope, but don't expect, every pick in top 25-30 tp play 50-100 games.

The statistics show more will fail than make it.

Well done, good effort. However after seeing what you said then about Higgins and the way you were so critical now on Clarke it does seem like double standards don’t you agree ? We all like to talk about the ones we got right but aren’t keen to admit our failures.

Don't expect every top 30 pick to play 100 games or play seniors for 10 years.

But that's gotta be the aim to be a consistent successful club.
To stay up the ladder and not bottom out, maintaining a winning culture.

By bringing in 3 players each year gives 8 years of refreshing the core team of 25 players. In other words drafted at 18, a lock in the seniors by 21/22 and replaced at 30.

There will be occasional players traded in and out. Free agency helps to cover holes.
Star players allow an opportunity for a high risk choice. But we still need 2 core players drafted that year. And to do it regularly

Its actually super beneficial to have a core group of the same age. We drafted that with Sonsie Gibcus Banks Brown Clarke.
And Balta, Baker and Bolton.
Unfortunately it looks like there will be a gap between them. A gulf.
We need to smash this draft too and we have the picks.
Do we pick the right type ?

Clarke had a good day yesterday. His 2021 crop all underlined why we feel justified in our excitement. His 2020 roughies Ryan and MoJu were good in the magoos. Two of his 2019 picks, Ralphy and Dow, were terrific in the ones. Miller and Ross did not embarrass him. Mid-season picks Pickett and Parker were great. Balta continues to show up the 24 blokes picked ahead of him (two of which were Higlet and CJ, so don't mention the war). Higlet showcased his genius in Perth. The only downers were Martyn and RCD, and the gripe that other than Dow and Sonsie, he hasn't recruited anyone who looks like becoming an AFL mid.

Still, he would have slept well.

I thought this thread was bumped to highlight Higgins 4 goal 16 disposal game. Good to see he got a mention.

But yes we do again have reason to be optimistic after a couple of good wins yesterday.

Still the wrong player. Did you watch the game? He played 5'8 CHF. Only score involvements were his own scores. Still, if he kicks 4 every week I'll admit I'm wrong about him.

willing to admit you're wrong yet? :D

It's a shame we wasted a pick on that Higgins kid. He's a dud and was completely the wrong player to pick........
Next minute: "Blair is a complete idiot for letting a talented kid walk from the club so cheaply. We should have got more for him, or forced him to stay with the Tigers. But Blair and the Tigers folded again."

He showed early promise but reckon Higlett was a great unknown after the brain trauma he suffered.
Can see why the club didn't fight too hard to keep him if he didn't want to stay.
I have very little hate for the kid after what he went through. Just happy to see him back playing good footy.

I don’t think we fought to keep him as he fell out of favour with the playing group.
