Matt Coulthard

Not only instrumental in a couple of goals to haul us back into the match, but also had some very important touches, tackles and pressure acts.
Including in the last stoppage.
Speed and aerobic capacity, skilled, can hit a target, and has composure.
And off field a good-natured lad who speaks well.
I'm definitely Big Kev.

But wait - there's more!

He took the mark on D50 and then took the bounces.
He's hit Dusty on the chest with a perfect pass - then got it back from the champ - and kicked next pass to Cotch who gave it to Jack for the goal.

I'm no statistician - but in that single play I'm crediting him with
1 mark - probably contested
2 bounces
2 kicks at 100%
1 handball received
1 Inside-50
1 goal assist
120 meters gained
And it was his first touch, no?

Great debut. Found one.

Any one notice that if the goalsquare was empty, that pass to Duz would've gone through for a goal.

This kid's got a beautiful kick.

he's been averaging about 10 possies a week in the 2nd's
it was good debut quarter though, hopefully he gets a full game next week and we get a better look at him

Looked a likely type the moment we drafted him.

Others such as Ralphy and Dow have been on the list near 4 years and shown less to get excited about than this kid did in his first 20 -30 minutes.

Question from an ex coach that wants to remain anonymous

I would keep.him in sub position for a few more games, his ability is such that it stays the same at any level, his pace run and carry along with skills are high,he will develop quite a bit still as never had a afl pre season yet.

It’s actually Coal-thard
I did see that was mentioned as the pronunciation when we drafted him. Dunno how you get that from Coulthard but it's the English language so people can feel free to butcher it as necessary.

Surely the 2 running bounces on the wing of the MCG

On debut,

Is a very very exclusive club?

Appears a bit like a free and more composed version of bobby hill at this early stage?
Reminded me of Harley Bennell at his best (only on the field stuff)

I don’t want to bring the cold bucket of water here people, but seriously…….one game.

Fab debut and all, but let’s see how he is tracking after 20 games.

Unfortunately a lot of these guys debut well then get found out.

Hoping that doesn’t happen here, but I think the expectations are too high at the moment.

Remember Dean Polo?

Which is generally regarded as fairly ordinary possies for anyone other than a shut down defender or tagger. One issue with playing magoos footy is that often you're playing with bog average scrubbers or with players trying desperately trying to make a case for their own selection at senior level. So you can get ignored and overlooked by your own team mates or trashed by very ordinary ball use. Probably the best thing the young fella could have done was share the footy with Dusty and follow up with the overlap run first up. One of Dusty's premium traits has always been that he looks to share with his team mates and bring them into the game at every possible opportunity. The trust from a champ like Dusty for the give n go double possession would be priceless for the youngster in his first moments of senior footy.

Fair go Streaky one, we're all waxing lyrical on here in the afterglow of a desperate last minute victory. Don't go ruining the moment by bringing back memories of Chooka.

That was some debut.
3 goals I think.

It’s nice to be excited about young talent.

Of course it has to be measured , but he fits the way the modern game is and how we play.

We go again.
Yes, he won the boomerang.
Coulthard seems a little less self assured (read cocky) than some previous flash in the pan types.

Don't think it was first touch.
In the third qtr (and only from memory) I think he laid a good tackle in one bit of action - and possibly gave off a handball at another time.

Yep…my best mate and all his family are Coulthards and pronounce it Coal-Thard, but I’m sure there is a few variations like most last names.
They actually hate being called Cooltard…no wonder why
