Lynch !!

Back in 2012, when Newman gave plenty of notice that he would be relinquishing his captaincy after being appointed in 2009, perhaps most of us would’ve picked Trent on football ability, but in hindsight it was his values and the type of person he is that really made him a great captain.

We can’t split all these future leaders without knowing them up close pretty well.

I’d love to see Graham, Ross, or any other young guy with great values have a truly standout year like Trent did in 2012... but if not, we don’t need our next captain to be a Brownlow medallist, we just need them to be a quality leader.

We’ve certainly got plenty of those.

So true and I guess when Newman retired the captaincy back then, one Lids probably thought he was in line to take it up (from memory).

Cotch - what an inspired choice.

then I vote Big Baby-Faced Psycho Tom Lynch too.

when @Tigers of Old proposed it earlier, I dismissed it out of hand,

but through reductionism, I find myself in agreement
Now you see it Ezy.
Tom is cool as a cucumber off field, psycho on it. Hard as a cats head at the footy & leads by example.
He's very much like Cotch.
Has experience as a former captain & will only be better after learning from our current leaders too.
28 years old. As a bonafide star, there's little risk of being dropped or traded for the next 5 seasons.
Powerful & imposing & demands respect.
He's the low risk, natural fit.

I mean how he plays, not his archery mime.

fast, tough, big motor, skilled.

but yeah, EZJ wont have it.
Given his toughness, would he be a good recruit to target? Given our dearth of leadership, he could be a future captain of RFC.....

The Kochies always seem to field a few Bathwater drinkers and Flogs

Tredrea - admitttedly could play though.

Chad Kornes - also admittedly could play.

Kane Cornes - .........................................................

Wingard - FigJam MK II ... now flogging it up in a shitt side.

Dixon - oversized pissant reliant on free kicks.

Hartlett - Campaigner now loading up with tatts to compensate for his stature and crepe paper hamstrings who now thinks he's some sort of tough guy. Flog.

Motlop - Campaigner

Duursma with his Robin Hood BS and head band ...campaigner

Rozee - can play but also is a bit of a campaigner.

Butters - Predicting that he will progress to campaigner status this year

The very fact that Duursma ran 100m to give Lynch a serve shows just how much he gets into the heads of our opposition. I loved it when he did that as I saw that Lynch was a serious threat to them regardless of if he played well or not because they were targetting him. You don't target a player you don't rate. We don't do that sort of crap because we know we don't need to. I'm sure Lynch would have noted how much effort they were willing to put in just to have a go at him, and enjoyed it too.

As for captain, I would tend towards Vlastuin although Jack Graham has potential, just needs to really cement his place in the upper echelons of the playing group. Dustin Martin I can't see as captain as he would just find the crap around the role to be irritating and likely bore him to tears, why irritate him, leave him in his current position as ridiculously great player and on-field leader without any of the other crap.

I like the idea of a slightly younger player becoming captain as it means they can be captain for a long time which I think has been a great benefit with Cotchin.

Not too fussed who the club decides on for Captain when the Cotch hands over the reins, guessing it will be a fairly mature player who's already grown up with this team. Agree with ya on not putting the captaincy on Dusty, would be crazy to saddle him with all the fluff n *smile*. Just let the man play footy n be unbelievably awesome.

As soon as I read your comment about a young player taking the Captaincy I got a massive cringe n the thought process went straight to Leigh Colbert at Geelol years ago. The appointment wasn't respected by the existing senior players at Geelol, he then missed a year injured n then forced himself a trade out to #lolnorf.
Fraught with danger giving the leadership to a young fella who hasn't been deemed to have done the hard yards by the senior cartel. All well n good to promote a young gun to lead for the future if the old core has already moved on.

Future Capt in order of preference;
1. Vlas - logical choice
2. Lynch - safe choice
3. Dusty - leader by example
4. Graham - probably in another 2-3 years

Lynch ..yeah definitely in the mix for our next Captain ( Maybe for 2 -3 years ) .. didn't think Vlas wanted the Job?
But think Graham will eventually be Captain

Big V has been great but his history with concussion injuries is troubling. It is a cumulative injury with its impact lasting well beyond retirement.
Richmonds care for its own is at the centre of our success. The possibility that he will take an early retirement in the not too distant future would sadden, but not disappoint.

Lynch would be a solid choice, but maybe Shedda the better one. Graham before at least 5-6 others .. no thanks.

I think those dismissing Dusty as an option have it wrong. He is the best player and best on field leader of any club in living memory, and he is both fit and at the top of his game.
He has done very well with the media. He is cool and direct and doesn’t lie. Just because he didn’t spend time in private school doesn’t mean he lacks the skill and confidence to take on the off field stuff, and succeed at that also.

His close friend Cotch is there to help.
It’s Time.

I have no doubt Dusty could handle the captaincy and the media, I reckon he is way smarter than he lets on. I just reckon he would find dealing with such idiots too tiresome, he strikes me as someone who doesn't suffer fools very well.

I'm not sure why you'd replace a captain who is 30 with one who is 29. Vlastuin is the obvious pick and while yes, concussion is a thing, I wouldn't be retiring him just yet.

Mustn't forget Lynch played with a broken hand for much of last year. It's no wonder his contested marking numbers (& goals) declined.
His key forward role was no less important though in crunching countless packs a game & bringing the ball to ground.
Won't surprise one bit if he has a better 2021. Key factor in our push for another flag.
