Little things that annoy you....

Lane discipline in Australia is shocking. Go to the UK - trucks stay on the left. Slow traffic stays on the left. Cars on the right that are slowing down faster traffic indicate and move left.

in Australia we have "drive in any lane you want at any speed and force faster traffic to weave around you."

Speeding and lane discipline are both problems.

Having now lived in the U.K. for over 20 years, this is nonsense.

I will say though that Melbourne drivers are generally much more aggressive than here.

There are European rules about trucks not being allowed in the right lane on motorways, they either don't apply in Ireland or aren't enforced. In fairness enforcemant over here is a complete joke. As are road markings. No central control so every new intersection is a roll of the dice in terms of which lane is for what. Maddening!

In general Irish drivers are more courteous and less aggressive than Melbourne drivers. But also prone to more random acts. Melbourne drivers seem more individualistic. 'Only what I'm doing matters, the rest of you go to *smile*'. That was my experience anyway.

And here we go with quoting laws. Maybe you should start quoting the road rules that relate to 'speed limits'

Of course, like I said earlier in this thread, pet hate is people who break the law complaining about others breaking the law.

What's the problem if they don't interfere with your day? Why would u bother holding someone up who is not going to bother you at all?

Just a selfish prick if u do IMO.

I'm not foolish. You won't quote the laws relating to obeying speed limits because you and many others don't believe they apply to you. You try to ridicule people who call you and your like out for speeding, but are quick to start quoting laws when someone else is doing something not of your liking on the roads.

Most of the time, the right hand lane is either congested like the other lanes and crawling along or it is doing roughly the speed limit. People doing the speed limit in the right hand lane shouldn't be an annoyance to others because you're not supposed to drive faster than the speed limit and therefore they are not 'in your way'. All this talk of drivers driving along 30kph below surrounding traffic is rare in my experience. Most of the complaints are pure exaggerations made by impatient idiots who believe the roads are for them only and everyone else should get out of the way.

And also note the rules you quote 'over 80kph'. That does NOT include 80kph. SO, the rule doesn't apply anywhere except where the speed limit is 81kph or higher. Most likely freeways. Very few 90kph exist anymore. Most got reduced to 80kph. Most likely on roads where the traffic is already traveling at the speed limit. So unless you're breaking the law by speeding, it isn't an issue most of the time.

And to get home, I have to make a right hand turn from a busy dual lane divided road. I'll sit in the right hand lane for about 2kms before turning. Why? Because of right hand lane hoggers and even worse, those who complain about right hand lane hoggers who think they own the roads and refuse to let anyone else into that lane. Many of you are the cause of the problems by being disrespectful pricks on the roads. Everyone needs to get somewhere.

And just because someone sits in the right hand lane at the speed limit and you get upset doesn't give you or anyone else the right to tailgate other vehicles, flash your headlights, toot your horn or yell abuse and anything else to bully other road users.

Knighter's -

Use the speedometer provided by the vehicle manufacturer to determine your speed. ADR's specify they must be with 10%. Newer cars speedo's must read MORE than your actual speed, tolerance still 10%. At most speeds and assuming the average speedo is out by 5%, this amounts to only a couple of Kph. If you can't stand driving a couple of kph slower, then hand back your driver's license and take another form of transport. In case you haven't realized, not everyone has a satnav or GPS in their cars. So use the speedo and you won't have any issues. If you need to be somewhere at a certain time, then get off your butt and leave earlier. Using your speedo also gives you an extra margin of error so if you creep over the limit (according to the speedo) by a small amount, you most likely will not be fined. Nothing more funny than idiots using their satnavs and GPS's whinging about being caught doing 3 kph over the limit when the speedo would have been showing a bit more at the time.

And all for the sake of a couple of kph.

The problem Knighter's, is that the vast majority of Australian motorists are a thick as bricks. They care only about themselves. They think the road belongs to them and them alone. They have no clue as to the meaning of 'driving to the conditions'. And even less idea on what it means to share the roads (including the right hand lane hoggers you're all complaining about). You have to set speed limits low because many of these fools haven't the brains to slow down below the posted limit when conditions demand it. Drive any of Melbourne's road on a wet day and you'll see all sorts of idiot drivers out there driving around like it was a bright sunny day with completely dry roads. So there's your problem.

:clap
Well written.

yep, I won't argue with a local. Just my perception when I was last there Midsy - on motorways and overtaking sections trucks always swung into the left ASAP. Australian drivers, particularly Melbourne and Sydney are pretty sucky.

people always imagine some one driving at 50 k in the right lane has 2 km of clear road ahead. Total bull. The right lane is slow because everyone is driving that way due to the traffic density.

Does anyone seriously believe that in peak hour on the Monash that anyone doing less than 100 should pullover to left so a stream 100k traffic will be created?

I get back to Melbourne once a year and find it a real challenge. Everyone drives like it's a competition. You simply have to be more courteous here (letting others in and out) due to the sheer volume of traffic. If you didn't, no-one would get anywhere. Trucks can be every bit as obstinate here though. People tend to be a little more cooperative here. Don't get me wrong though - there are plenty of tossers on the roads as well.

I did 26,000 km around the US a few years ago, and have driven in probably 60% of other European countries, and what I read on here occurs everywhere in varying degrees.

Normally I wouldn't. To address the specific complaint about those driving in the right hand lane at the speed limit, it's annoying when the whingers start quoting laws and having a good old sook when if THEY obeyed the law and were driving within the speed limit, those in the right hand lane driving at the speed limit wouldn't be a problem.

It's hypocritical. And not only that, I'd be happy to wager that those who don't believe that speed limits apply to them are also likely to believe that other laws don't apply to them either. The roads are safer when everyone obeys the law. People that don't obey the law for whatever reason make the roads more dangerous for everyone else. They are more likely to drive in a dangerous manner and more likely to cause collisions (I won't call them accidents). This causes delays on the roads, damages infrastructure, injures and kills people, puts pressure on hospitals and emergency services, and pushes up your insurance premiums.

Now who's selfish?

People who worry about what others do when it doesn't impact them. I agree about driving to the conditions being correct, I could sit 160 all the way to Sydney with no danger to me or others. I don't think anyone here is promoting reckless driving, just to be courteous to all road users.

the real danger is the next generation of compulsive device users who will be texting as they drive, whenever they stop in traffic. Driver distraction will be the biggest issue coming up.

Blind adherence to laws is not always admirable.

Just don't inconvenience anyone on the road, simple. Keep to left when not overtaking, get into the flow of traffic when you merge onto a freeway. If someone wants to speed in the right lane, let them.

If people want to speed, then they can take their vehicle to a race track. And stay off public roads.

Posters here really don't get it so I won't argue any further. You can all keep putting up with complete *smile* heads on the roads as they've got your full support while law abiding citizens are considered a pain in the ass.

Andrew Okeefe, might say more about me then him, however can't last 2 seconds without starting to feel queezy and irritated when having to listen to that very ordinary bloke.
