Maybe I should have created the "All Star side" from this litany of failures?

St Kilda best would have to be Ian Stewart

Brilliant. Before my time, but he was great.

Im sure Terry Smith (not in the same class but loved him as a player R.I.P) might have come from StKilda also.

Have we ever got anyone decent from North Melbourne or Essendon. Couldnt think of anyone.

Can anyone do better than me on John Annear from Collingwood and also confirm McCormack and someone Stewart (porn star moustache) didnt end up with us.

Terry Smith (R.I.P) started at Richmond, followed Tony Jewell to St Kilda, then returned to Richmond with Jewell in 86/87.

I'd say David Cloke MKII was better (and reiterate that Annear was ordninary for us)

From Essendon.....................Paul Sproule, great player.

From Collingwood, Philip Walsh was another dud ohh, and what about Bob Heard!!!

The 1st poster is a bit hard on Steve Sziller.Darryl Cowie( He played on G.Ablett snr one afternoon) or Michael Roberts are worse picks from the Saints.By the time Michael Roberts got to Richmond,His playing days were numbered.

Others i can think of for the worst list are
David Williams and Simon Eishold from Melbourne,Both had decent careers at the Dees but really struggled at Tigerland.

I agree with you on Sziller, Pickers. I was harsh on him given he did play a role and was of value in a team that made the finals. Wasnt totally happy with him as worst and I appreciate Michael Roberts being brought up. Im kicking myself for not choosing him but living a good life seeing him on Television and not seeing any link between him an our club.

Sziller had to put up with Frawleys bumkin humour, calling him our dirty filty rat every time he spoke of him playing a tagging role each week.

These blokes like David Williams,Eishold who came to the club to play two or three games. How many were there over that period???

BTW Pickers. If Melbourne or Footscray have a thread like this on thier forum then your username would be a good reminder for them.

Hmm 35? that was Michael and not Justin.. right?

From Sydney - the worst was Daryl Vernon, Gary Frangalas was ok
From St.Kilda one of the great ruckman Wayne Thornborrow- did he play a game in 2 yrs ?
Essendon - Mick Thompson was OK
Geelong - Adam Houlihan who only kicked goals when his contract was nearly up each yr
Brisbane- Has anyone mentioned Rory Hilton

Michael Pickering was having a good 1992 season at Melbourne before he broke his Foot, but next year under Neil Balme faded away to a reserves Flag with the likes of Greg Healy,Rod Keough,Darren Bennett and our own Andy Goodwin. :)

This, from a newspaper article titled "The Backyard Operators" in 1990, shows why we nearly went to the wall (dollar figures are the transfer fees paid):

1980:
Dennis Collins (Carlton) $80,000. 17 games
Paul Sarah (geelong) $30,000. 37 games

1981:
Allan Martello (Hawthorn) $70,000. 32 games

1982:
Noel Mugavin (Fitzroy) $5,000. 2 games
Ross Brewer (Collingwood) $35,000. 6 games
Daryl Sutton (North via WA) $80,000. 6 games
Andy Preston (Geelong) $30,000. 18 games
Ian Sartori (St.Kilda) $30,000. 18 games

1983:
Richard Murrie (Geel) $85,000. 8 games
Geoff Ablett (Haw) $60,000. 16 games
Kevin Ablett (Haw) $5,000. 5 games
Neil Peart (Coll) $15,000. 31 games

1984:
Peter Francis (Fitzroy) $85,000. 51 games
John Annear (Coll) $100,000. 65 games
Phillip Walsh (Coll) $110,000. 40 games
Craig Stewart (Coll) $40,000. 35 games
Jeff Dunne (St.Kilda) $20,000. 1 game
Rohan Burke (Carlton) $37,500. no games

1985:
Chris Burton (Footscray) $40,000. 50 games
Mark eustice (Ess) $30,000. 62 games
Noel Lovell (Coll) $15,000. 4 games
Michael McKenna (Foots) $45,000. 22 games

1986:
Andrew Cross (Fitz) $20,000. 1 game
Peter McCormack (Coll) $20,000. 4 games
Gary Frangalas (Swans) $100,000. 17 games
Michael roberts (St.K) $30,000. 12 games
Daryl Cowie (St.K) $17,000. 7 games
Terry Smith (St.K) $15,000. 6 games

This only represents 7 years, and I reckon a few were missed also.

Goes to show that recruiting *smile* ups aren't a modern phenomenon at Punt Road.....
