List Management 2023

Despite our poor season unless I’m missing something we haven’t delisted a single player. The Biggy trade (& Colina?) our only changes to the list..Kosi may come in.
That says to me Blair thinks the draft is terrible..we’re having a year where the Premiership is not the goal & Yze is going to see what’s he has available already.

On that basis, I’ve got little expectations for next year. If we make finals that will be a surprise. Not saying we can’t but some serious improvement would have to come from within. If Yze can bring that then credit to him but I’m expecting a bit of pain & hitting the draft the yr after with some big list movement in 2024.

We let go of Bradtke but we’ve also lost 4 players to retirement which is an unusually high number.
Club probably feels that’s enough changes and didn’t want a wholesale list turnover

And Bradtke was a rookie, wasn’t he? I think ToO is right, and 2024 will be a look and see year from Yze. Some of that will also involve the remaining coaching staff.

Yes indeed Oldie. 2024 is going to be a season of “treading water” (and probably going a bit under!) but I can see us in 12 months undergoing a major list adjustment.

I think there's a little bit of "lets see if the old dogs have any passion left to have one more run", with an altered game plan and a bit of new blood.
If it doesn't work, we'll clean out and start again.

I feel we will be fine. We gave alot of one quarters away and that cost us games. Need 4 qtrs full stop.

I hope we don't tread water.
I'd like to see some improvement, challenge for lower part of the 8.
Or bomb out (semi tank even) and get a prized draft pick. Then grow with the next Trent or Dustin.

Plus banking on Lynch and Gibcus being able to play again.

Realistically I think we should look at it as being a bonus if we get both of them back.
Imo the club should be expecting the worst but hoping for the best & planning accordingly. Let's face it we'll probably only have Lynch for a couple more years anyway.
I'd imagine that they've got a player targeted already to take Tom's place. Plus they'll try to keep as many draft picks as possible next year.

Most Clubs tend to plan well in advance.

Yes the ‘stock pilling of picks’ works for me.

Yep.
Transition year, chance for the new coach to assess the list, last chance for fringe players on 1 year deals, etc.
After the top half dozen or so picks in the draft this year, the thinking is it evens out from there.
(Obviously plenty of diamonds to be found in the rough, as there is every year).
In contrast, next years draft supposedly has more quality mids and talls; Blair keeping the powder dry.

Yeah that's exactly what I meant. Assume the list is healthy, we've filled in a couple of gaps through trade or development of talent, and push hard one more time.

I don't like the chances of success, and wouldn't choose the same path myself. Seems to put a rebuild smack bang in Tasmania compromised drafts. Do we think we can change our momentum that much to leapfrog Melb, Collingwood, Brisbane? I doubt it but would happily eat the biggest humble pie in October 24 if they proved me wrong.

I agree with you. Worth a roll of the dice with a new coach (and presumably a new plan), Dusty for who knows how much longer plus with many of the remaining premiership players getting older. If this draft is poor & the team doesn’t perform next year, we can do a major clean out then.

To be fair we that about the Draft each yr. It makes one wonder if there's an issue with the jnr pathway given every draft is seen as weak when it arrives....

Maybe we dont make major list changes for years. Stability. Similar to the Geelong method.
EAch year we'll have 3-4 champions retire.
2024 - Grimes. Pickett.
Then very soon (25 or 26) Dusty, Dion, Lynch, Broady, Nank.
Then Flossy, KMac,
Thats 9 in 3 or 4 years.
Throw in 1 or 2 delistings or trades and its 5 off the list every year.
Refreshed but not cut deeply

There is plenty of talent but not many decent talls and very few genuine tall forwards. I think the issue is the draft kids have been picked to death and everyone knows what they can’t do, and as a result we keep marking down the overall quality. That said Vic Metro was definitely a weak year and they guide the media narrative on the quality.
Next years draft is chockers full of 180cm mids and only a few tall forwards.

Think only know we are starting to see the effect of the Covid years.

Especially the Vic kids. Their development has suffered the most I feel. 😫
