King & Hislop Suspended

I wish we had 22 players with jake King's mindset.

He has played well since coming back into the team and should be around next year.

Hislop will be there too.

Both these blokes put their head over the ball, they're not snipers.

Nice to have a couple of blokes who won't take a backward step.

They may need a bit of tempering but a new coach will want them both.........

2 words .... Tim Fleming.

Being tough means jack *smile* if you have no talent.

Tim Fleming tough ....... hardly

But this team needs those bloke who don't back down ......... even if they are 5'1" and weigh 80 lb wringing wet, they still make others look over their shoulder.

Agreed. However, I would prefer if we inject some skill first. Our turnovers and decision making are pathetic and our skills are not AFL standard at the moment, that's why we're in the bottom 4.

I know it's hard to beleive but the skills will improve markedly when the next coach comes in and teaches these boys that you have to PROTECT THE BALL CARRIER instead of running off ahead to receive an easy handball receive.

Wallet has taught this run ahead instead of sheppard for 5 years and has all the boys nervous because they have the perceived pressure of a tackle because no-one is protecting their back.

All the best sides have one thing in common ......... THEY PROTECT THE BALL CARRIER....... like we did against essendon (for once) . once this becomes the norm at tigerland the skills will improve.

I hope so but you can see some of them naturally aren't good kicks or decision makers. You can protect them all you want but the root of the problem is still there. They need to be weeded out ASAP and replaced.

These two immature individuals that are called footballers have not done the club any good for their actions. Their actions for biffing when the team was getting pumped is what I would expect from an outer suburban league club, it could also indicate to the football world that Rawlings had instructed these two to play like thugs.

King is out? Damn! Now we have no chance against the Hawks. :rofl

Both have plenty more talent than Fleming, but don't let that get in the way of your constant whining, especially with regards to King.

King will be around next year for 2 reasons:

He has been one of our best since he came back into the side and he's contracted.

Hislop would want to improve alot on this year but he'll be around too.

I'm not sure what Jake King has done to you but he'll be around next year so build a bridge

Forget about the bridges, both have poor skills, the lack of this important prerequisite in this game called football make them the weakest link and a liability to the team. I know they are contracted and they may be retained in 2010 but you have to acknowledge they have poor skills.

King is the type of player we need. Not because of his skills, but because in a good side he is a player we can sacrifice who can run around with an opposition gun and hopefully restrict them. Did it against the Dees with Davey, did it against the Swans when he shut Shaw out. Means you don't have to use the skilled players as taggers. Every side has a King, lesser skilled than his teammates, but give him a job to do and he'll do it. Saints had Baker and now use Jones, Cats use Ling, Swans Kirk, Blues Jospeh, Hawks McGlynn and so on. I'd be happy with King running around doing this rather than someone like Deledio or Cotchin or another elite midfielder we might bring in over the next couple of years.

GPB over the past month how would you rate King's skills as shown on the field?

With regards to skills it's not just these two. Amongst others, I'm pretty worried about Rance at the moment. He can't even seem to handball to someone without making them sweep it off their shoelaces. I'm convinced our skills look worse than other teams because we constantly put ourselves under pressure by not protecting the ball carrier, and allowing him time and space to decide and execute. Too many of our blokes (Tuck one of the worst offenders) run on looking for a hospital handball over the top rather than putting on a shepherd to create time and space.

The main bloke I'm defending here is King. Since King has come back in I've seen him turn over the ball once and that was against Carlton. Saw him swing onto his left and hit a target on the weekend, something most of our list can't do. I think it has been his decision making moreso than his skills that have been letting him down. Earlier in the year when he was turning the ball over he was doing so by taking the riskier option in the corridor rather than the safe kick along the boundary. Some of those kicks were made look even worse by team mates that called for the ball and then made token efforts to claim it. He's no Brett Deledio but he's no Duncan Kellaway either. His height goes against him but his pace and determination are an asset to the point that without them he wouldn't be on an AFL list.

Hislop is a different story. Poor skills is a pretty broad statement. But is skills only kicking and handballing. Hislop has his good and bad points but is there enough there to make an AFL player. By an AFL, I mean one who is good enough to earn his place in the team whilst not necessarily good enough to be a B&F winner. Every team has them. Skillwise he looks comfortable handballing with either hand. He looks to have pretty good hands in that he can take a strong overhead grab and also looks strong winning the ball in tight and getting it out. Unlike most of the little boys we draft he looks strong through the core/hips (like Cogs pre injuries) and he either beats the tackler or stands up in the tackle and dishes off. His aggression is a plus, just needs to be channeled in the right direction. Reminds me a tiny bit of Max Rooke. The 2 main drawbacks wioth Tom look to be his legspeed and his awkward kicking. When he has time to go back over the mark and kick he looks awkward but more often than not he gets the jog done by either kicking the goal or spotting up someone. When he is forced to kick on the run under pressure he looks very average. I think his main problem is his awkward gait and kicking style.

What annoyed me the most about Maxwell's comments is that they simply weren't true. He was obviously directing them at King and Hislop. Both these boys handed out one cheap shot each on the day, but to say that when it was their turn to put their heads over the ball, they pulled out, is utter crap. King and Hislop always put their heads over the ball.

Give me these 2 over the skills of Jordy McMahon any day of the week.

If we are going to have a tagger in the side, I would choose Jackson over King any day of the week. Then if King can't tag, he becomes almost useless.

FFS, at least they have some mongrel in them.
Richmond have been the biggest bunch of girls in the last 15-20 years.

Whilst their actions were misguided at least they showed a pulse out there

IMO, Jackson is better served playing as an accountable midfielder who can go off and get his own ball rather than just playing the shut down role. With King being a lesser skilled player he can be the one who does the real hard tagging role where it doesn't matter if he gets touches or not, job done if his opponent doesn't get many either.

Jackson can and should play that role you suggest for King. You can't have them both in the same midfield.
