Not sure that it's a policy, but it's what happens on most occasions.
A few exceptions though, Cotchin and Jack both started off with their current numbers, and Richo and Bowden both started off with their fathers numbers.
I reckon it's a policy since Dimma has been coach. Those boys were drafted before Dimma. Example is Dusty starting in 36. Only guy that didn't start in a high number of Drioli and I reckon they did that out of respect for his great uncle Maurice
How did Aarts get 16 quick? RCD and Dow 26 & 27 too quick. Players with higher numbers are above them.
Aarts started in 39 and got upgraded after 14 games in his debut season on the rookie list.
RCD and Dow got the lowest of the available higher numbers as they were the first drafted in each of their draft years. Same with Gibcus in 28. Reckon he will get upgraded. Dow won't as he hasn't shown enough

I always wonder how many goals Jack Riewoldt would have kicked before defenders double & triple teamed him.
The game has changed so much over the years you need to look a lot deeper than pure numbers.
With respect it's almost an entirely different game from when Skinny played. Unfair to compare eras.
