Are you serious?

When you shorten someone's name doesn't it sound friendlier (closer) and a bit more informal to the person? (e.g Hey Dave or Davo instead of Hey David)

It depends. You're talking personal one on one. Abo, like Paki, is a collective so not friendlier. And Abo especially has negative connotations.

You mean like Stew instead of Stewart?

Yep.

How? "Aussie" isn't racist is it? Has it just developed into negative through time just like 'spastic'?

Happens all the time. The n word and the c word, used to refer to black folk 50-100 years ago, are obvious examples.

Like every other word or action that becomes offensive or accepted. Through intent and context.

(historical significance falling into the context category)

We used to call a kid I went I school with "abbo". His name was Abberton.

It's not a term I would use with Aboriginal people, though.

If it wasn't for a quick thinking english friend who jumped to stop sh!t happening before it started, I would have gotten a decent beating for calling a group of English Indians "Pakis". I never realised how offensive it was to them. That was my issue, not theirs.
Hey Baloo, I think the one thing about racism is context. The term Paki in Australia during these times was far removed from the description you illustrate. Yes the Poms call Indians "Paki's", it is a term used to put down all from the subcontinent and rightly so the indians hate being called a paki. You may very well be given a hiding in the UK for saying it. Australia however does not use the term in the same context, well I have never heard it used that way. We call Pakistan cricket players paki's. Not Indians. So yes those who are shortening names or terms of people from elsewhere are rightly so pointing out the context, racism is different.
The caddy thread has been hijacked for a stupid comment which in the heat of battle meant no offence to those inflicted with spactisity for which he has acknowledged.
I agree too, keep racism where it belongs.

Anyone know how to post the richmond recruiter video doing the rounds when we stole Josh? I could do with another laugh at the cats expense!

Yeah. This was in London. I was completely dumbfounded at the reaction but afterwards when explained I realised it was my ignorance that caused the issue.
