Jake Aarts

Not an elite spectacular whizz bang player Aartsy, but he's as honest as they come n simply keeps earning his wage week after week. Even my Geelol bro likes him n thought we'd unearthed another quality youngster.

17 disposals, 9 contested, 8 marks, 2 contested marks, 2 goals and a goal assist. Perfect role-player small forward's game. As a comparison Castagna had 4 contested possessions and Rioli zero. Often you get out of something what you put in.

He is doing what Rioli and Castagna were doing 2 years ago.
Always in the right places and his set shots are very reliable
I had him 2nd best behind Balta

Great 2 goals by Aarts.
He is performing Arts.
Just wish he would kick the easiest one of all.
Yeah the one he missed.
2nd Quarter.
Around the corner set shot, bread and butter. Huge miss at that stage.

Jakey listed as our most accurate shot at goal this season (minimum 10 shots at goal)

19 shots at 68.4%

Our worst?

Tommy Lynch, 37 shots at 40.5%

It’s where he is getting them from compared to Lynch. Yeah Lynch not kicking great but ‘most’ of his shots are further out and on a bit of an angle. I think Jake has got a few from the goal square or front and centre.

Toms goal kicking has been a major letdown. Jake has been a real surprise.

Didn't that article also rate the players shots for degree of difficulty and expectation of conversion according to the champion data stats on all things football as well?

Lynvh was brought to punt road on big contract .... 40% from anywhere doesn't cut it.

Lynch is missing them from 20m straight in front. Lynchs set shots have been worse Richo's

Like others, I was starting to feel that Aarts was becoming a bit of a liability, but the last few games he has really presented, had a crack and been one of the team's better players and contributors. Needs to keep making the most of his opportunities.

15 goals from his 10 games so far this season, he’s tracking for a 35 goal season.

His front and square goal off the pack was classic small forward play. Would love to see him team up with MRJ and Baker in the fwd line. Not sure they'd be able to do the running of dan and george but would be far more dangerous around goal.

I wanted him dropped, but he’s taken heed of his liabilities and lifted accordingly. Others haven’t and they’re the ones that should go back to the VFL before Jake does.

Lynch has missed far too many sodas this year. Has kicked 18.22 and I'd hazard a guess (no details just from my eyes from the ones he's missed) that 10 of those behinds at least he should have kicked. Missed 2 sodas on Friday night from relatively easy angles and not far out. He's kicking better the further out he is. Seems to be stabbing at them a bit from closer in and pushing them out to the right mainly.

He is fierce, freakishly strong and improving.

He's putting Rioli and George under the microscope. And maybe Lynch.

There's something of early Jake King about Aarts. A bloke who shouldn't even be out there, of 5'3" playing as a leading forward. Hitting space and demanding the ball. Playing tall.

And then the small game.

There's something of Caddy when we played him tall. Something of Townsend. Of George when he played tall.

Aarts is playing a position we call 'dirty trick'. A small playing tall, hitting the holes, with talls playing blocker and decoy. When he's not playing actual small - and pretty well.

And then we slot him into Lambert's role for a bit. Up the park and roving.

Anyway, he's been a revelation. Of his scope and our structures and tactics.

He's gone to work has Aarts. Had a good footy head. Realised he didn't have the speed/step of George, the intuition/ingenuity of Rioli, the hands/vision of Sheds. So he hit the gym. Went up a weight division. Made him look slow early in year. But it's paying dividends now as he's finding his feet and trusting his body. These last few weeks have seen him attack ground ball and come up with the pill. A self-aware footballer ( hell a self-aware human) is a beautiful thing.
