I see the upside with Ross, but all players run throughout the summer. I’d like to see him take the game on more with his kicks, like Short does.
He does too many of those short, sideways kicks and not enough of those Short, forward kicks.
Yeah they all run through Summer but not all engage personal running coaches.
Funny you mention short kicks when you go back and look at his Draft Profile where it said 29 per cent of the time he kicks long, also from the BIO it said he should use his speed more when bursting from packs which you could probably say is the same in the AFL so far? A running coach could be the answer?
STRENGTHS: Inside/outside mix, aggression, ball winning, efficiency, speed
IMPROVEMENTS: Endurance, tackling
SUMMARY: Jack Ross is a player who has flown under the radar to put together a very impressive year amongst a raft of stars in the Oakleigh Chargers midfield. A TAC Cup mainstay, Ross has shown signs of an all-round midfield game with a good mix of aggressive ball winning, and outside class to deliver well by foot. Given he wins his fair share of contested ball, with an average of 5.4 clearances while kicking the ball long 28.7 per cent of the time, Ross’ disposal efficiency is highly impressive and a testament to his decision making when given time and space. That mix of class and aggression is rare, and puts him in good stead for making an impact at the next level with his 86.7kg frame. Given his power, Ross’ 20m sprint time of 2.95 seconds makes sense, but he could look to use that more when bursting from packs. Despite his aggressive approach, Ross can also improve on his tackling numbers, averaging just 2.4 as a midfielder who often finds himself in the clinches. As a power-based athlete, endurance is also something Ross should improve to become a more dominant midfielder and run out games with more than his average of 20.5 disposals. There is not much Ross can’t do as a midfielder though, and he looks like a ready-made prospect.
I wasn’t commenting on his U18 performances, I was commenting on his 2 years of AFL performances.
And I believe he already hired a running coach this time last year (and the year before?) so while he could explode next year, I don’t think the running coach should be looked at as a cue to get people excited that he’s about to break out.
It’s a given he’ll improve on his running, it’s part of his natural improvement and nothing more than what he should be doing anyway.
But regardless, my point was that his on-field kicking is a bit safe. He can play chaos football really well with his hands, but so far he slows us down with his feet.
To my eye, he went short and sideways more than any other player on our list this year. If you disagree, then who would you say went sideways this year more than Jack Ross?
I‘m also probably less impressed by his 42 possession game than others and don’t consider him an absolute lock, yet. He wasn’t very damaging in that game (and hasn’t been damaging with the ball in any game since), so the AFL-based evidence for optimism for Ross so far comes from a single statistically great game, which isn’t what Richmond cares about these days. So he’s not yet a lock to be a great midfielder.
I am confident he’ll learn to evolve his game style, and see the clear potential with his well-rounded midfield game, ball winning ability, and effective hands, I’m just curbing my enthusiasm until I see him kick Shorter.
I am not disputing your observations on Ross 123 just that I thought Ross was going beyond in his 2021 preparations and I think this was pretty much born out in a channel 9 piece in him tonight., (i will try to post it if i can). While others were holidaying he was straight on a plane and back into the gym with a personal trainer to add power, explosiveness and speed.
If that is not enough to get you excited from one of our young players you are a hard man to please
You know his dad works at channel 9.Plenty of the young fella’s on same flight and no doubt doing same training if not moreI am not disputing your observations on Ross 123 just that I thought Ross was going beyond in his 2021 preparations and I think this was pretty much born out in a channel 9 piece in him tonight., (i will try to post it if i can). he sure does the job on the field for a burgeoning but inexperienced player.
Have high hopes he continues his progress with us for years to come
