Jack Ross

He has a challenge ahead of him. Find the ball enough to make use of his attributes.

It's a simple one. Go hard, get the ball.

He's never had a block of games in the 22 to do this, ever. Give him a month to see what he can do
Last week coming on as sub he played predominantly inside. Even the week before that against the Pies. We all stood back and admired the impact he had. On Thursday night he was put on a wing and didn’t have the same see ball get ball instincts.

So in summary he needs to be play in the guts and where the action is.

Wow. And 82.5 km/h is only the average speed. Imagine how fast at full tilt?

Telstra must be fudging these numbers like they do their NBN speeds…
Give him the kick out from a behind and give him free reign to sprint off and kick the goal. I'm sure if he can do 82km/h he can also jump 10metres high and kick the ball 100metres.

He was tentative numerous times last night, and it was costly.
Everyone else was cracking in, and he was second guessing.
He is a solid lad, so it’s not a lack of physicality.
Must be confidence, or lack thereof.
I don’t get why a borderline player like Ross wouldn’t just go like a bull at a gate every game, like his career depended on it.
Which it does.
So this.
Thursday night I watched him on several occasions, standing back from the contest and not attacking it at full pace. The ball was there to take.
Not sure you can iron that out of his game but it must be a non negotiable.
Ball gazing is not a desirable trait.

It was strange to see that as he has never looked tentative in the past. Great opportunity to play in the guts this week with Prestia out and see what he can do. Has never looked really comfortable on a wing.

the wing is a very specialised position and I am not sure it fits Ross's attributes

He is not good enough for the guts - also slow, no left foot, etc etc.
Wing is his only possible position, which highlights his limitations and is another example of us recruiting The Wrong Type.

Funny player is Ross. On games played (65*) and even impact, he is our most successful draftee since 2018 by some margin. Yet, he still has no set position and with a full list to chose from, arguably not even best 22.

If Ross is the best draftee we have to show for the last five years you can see why some of us are rather pessimistic about our short, medium term prospects going forward.

Nothing against him personally. He is clearly well prepared, diligent and a hard worker but to be blunt, he’s basic and we need to do a lot better if we are to start moving up the ladder again.

Edit: Forgot about Pickett but my general point still stands.

Yes it's tough watching Sydney who drafted Rowbottom, McInnery, Warner and Roberts with the next picks after RCD, Ross, Dow and Clarke. Then you throw in the Tom Brown over Holmes/Van Rooyen.

We must get Matt Clarke's replacement right.

Yep.
Good hands.
Competitiveness.
Coaching ability/listening.
Disposal by hand and foot.
Speed and agility.
Marking.
Endurance.
Decision making.

All of the above qualities are what a recruiter should be looking for, according to Noel Judkins.
A recruiter with a proven track record and years of experience.

So we need to be asking ourselves, how many of our recruits recruited in recent years tick those boxes?

I really hope we can replace Matthew Clarke with a top notch national recruiter.

Not sure I’d be rewarding him with a move on ball after that effort.
It’s only early days but McCauliff an up grade and better option than Ross. Gets his own ball, is quick and has a raking boot on him.

I would like to see McAuliffe in a couple of real VFL games first but he is definitely promising. This year we need to work out who is a keeper and who isn’t and I think this is a great opportunity for Ross to put his case forward. With our lack of quality depth we really need him to make it or this rebuild will take even longer.

Any love for Ross after today? Fought hard all day made good space, mostly good decisions apart from a few errant handballs and looked like had more time than others on the field. I thought he was excellent. Did go missing a little bit in the third quarter but easnt Alone in going missing in patches. Probably next step for him is four quarters Of consistency.

Thought he was one of our better players. Won’t be a star but will form part of our core mid field moving forward with the likes or sonsie and Mcauliffe along with hopefully another couple high end mids in this years draft.

He was ok today. One bad handball there in the last quarter but otherwise, one of our better players.

He's a plodder but he got a kick.
I'm with you can't get excited with Ross
Slower then a 3 wheel tractor.
He is good if you never want to play in September or you like getting decent draft picks.
He needs to be cut loose at the end of the year.
