Ivan Soldo

Will be interesting. What we gain in 1st use we'll lose in his ground level and around the ground work. This is where I'm interested to seeing whether Soldo has improved. For ruck work these are the stats of last 5 games:

- 3 hitouts to advantage for us and 17 for opposition, 33 clearances for us and 42 for opposition
- 8 / 14 and 26 / 36
- 7 / 17 and 36 /38
- 8 / 13 and 28 /29
- 6 / 16 and 34 /35

Last two games we've been pretty well smashed in clearances. Games before that we held our ground clearance wise despite being well beaten in hit outs to advantage.

Thanks for those stats. Interesting to see how we go with more even hit out to advantage

I’m interested to see what type of tank Soldo now has. In past seasons he has not been on the ground for sustained periods without needing a break.

He's a completely different beast to Balta and even Nank. Bigger but not as quick or agile, even compared to Nank, Balta is leaps ahead athletically. But they could form a complimentary combo. Certainly Big Boy and Ceglar are going to have to deal with two wildly different opponents.

He could really increase our HOTA and therefore our crappy clearance rate, but he/they must stop the F50 marks. Crucial! Ceglar and McEvoy could win the game for the Dawks if not.

It's not a worry. He'll get a decent break from Balta who managed most of the game last match when Nank went down. Was still going like the Duracell Bunny at game's end and had a serious impact in all respects.

Agree.
Fremantle Ruck took two contested marks in the first quarter last week, with Nankervis not making it to our back line to help out and compete in the marking contest.

Looking forward to seeing what Ivan brings.
I think if he get a few games he will improve us.

I'm excited to find an new improved ruck comcination in the next 8-10 weeks.

Ivan Soldo’s coming from a long way back having not played the game as a kid.

Nevertheless, his cousins been coaching him for 5 years and he’s been a slow burn, improving technique, strength and fitness. He is a tapping ruckman,so might surprise on the upside.

He’s popular among his teammates and skill-wise can take a mark,so should be useful down the line or in the square.

It’s no secret he lacks the mobility of the top rucks, but providing he gives effort and contests, could well hold his own.

I’m pleased he’s got his shot at it,could be the makings of young Ivan.

This reinforces the eye test for mine.

I watch ruck contests and see randomness. In theory, we should routinely see a clean string of events that goes: ball touches ruckman’s hand —> ball lands in midfielder’s lap —> ball is delivered to teammate closer to goal —> goal is scored. Cleanly, without chaos.

I think that’s become a kind of unicorn situation.

We hit gold with Ivan Maric. Someone who provides a physical presence around the ground and some aerial support at both ends. We then went traditional again with Shaun Hampson (playing the traditional role to a very high standard in 2016) before we targeted Nankervis to play the Ivan way again.

The exciting thing for me about Soldo is he looks tough. He’s kind of a hybrid, because he can also win hitouts. I’m most interested in his physicality and defensive marking though, I think all opposition teams are too good at disrupting that unicorn hitout —> goal chain.

Compare the stats between Nankervis & soldo is farer.
Clearances aren’t the sole responsibility of the ruck

Will be on the most fascinating aspects of the game to see how Ivan's development has progressed and how he fares against an old warhorse in McEvoy. Would seem like a good match up.

No of course not but the best ruckmen on today's game are pretty good at ground level and almost act as an extra midfielder. Grundy for example today had 24 disposals, 6 tackles, 7 clearances, 18 contested possessions. Gawn yesterday had 15 disposals, 4 tackles, 7 clearances, 13 contested possessions. You have to be alot more than just a tap ruckman today of you want to succeed. Based on past performance, whilst Nanks isn't in that league, he is alot closer to providing that ground level work than Soldo has been.

This is the part that concerns me tbh , without trying to be doom and gloom , when i have watched him in the past found him to be a bit ordinary around the ground ,

But I wish him all the best and hope he goes well .

Think some people are selling Ivan way short and will be pleasantly surprised and maybe even embarrassed.
He’s competitive, has a mean streak and is tackling to hurt. Can also go forward and take a mark

Why embarrassed? I think most are looking forward to see how much his around the ground work has improved. This is his chance to make the most of it.

I’m obviously referring to the people who have doubts about his ability.
Sorry thought that was obvious?

For the sake of Richmond, I hope I get embarrassed.

Only if you were one of the guys who potted him. And you would not have been alone.
I personally am hoping I feel vindicated!
